I just think it’s sad our fans expectations have dropped now. Doing ‘ok’ is fine with Ole.

Years of mediocrity await. I hope I’m wrong.

It is called being realistic. We have tried two serial winners in Jose and LVG and both failed. I don't really see any decent managers available apart from Conte who basically another Jose.

Liverpool won the lottery by getting Klopp but it is yet to be seen if he can continue into next season as he should have a fit squad.

Reality is with our current owners you are not keeping up with City and Chelsea. Barcelona and Real have tried and are now Bankrupt.

Also what constitutes as doing okay. We have back to back champions League qualification for the first time since Fergie. Unbeaten away in the league all season and got to the final of a major European trophy. I would call that decent progress since he has taken over.

Whether he can take that next step next season is the million dollar question but none of us will know that until next season is finished.

I pretty much agree with what fez has said above.

However, the point I have made is right there in your very post:

You've described Jose as having 'failed', but he won the Europa League comfortably, and in the same post you've praised Ole for getting to the very same final and losing it horrendously.

If you have a bunch of talented, very fast players, playing against a high line, you'll always do well. You don't need a manager for that, that's how basic it is.

I'd also like to add that Bruno has been far more important than Ole, he's carried the club single handedly since coming in. Ole would have been gone ages ago without him.

So with Ole's new contract, Varane and Sancho (even if nothing else), the club have really backed him to the hilt as much as is possible.

He's done good things in terms of squad unity, and there have been good moments, but it's crunch time now and he has to deliver something this season. There are still major question marks around his tactics and game management.

At the very least we need to be pushing for the title, I could forgive not winning it if we fell just short, playing good football, etc.

Not worried about Sancho at this early stage. He's playing in a fairly disjointed team that isn't coached well, and this is a tougher league than Germany.

He's basically Walcott with better passing ability if you ask me

Absolutely not. Walcott's main attribute was his speed, Sancho is more of a link up player, less speed, more fluid on the ball, far better passing, etc.

Unfortunately, he's better suited to playing in a defined system, something we don't have - at all.

We can discuss it until the cows come home, but it's obvious to everyone that Ole is a poor manager from a coaching/tactical perspective. Sure, he's done some good in terms of keeping players happy and unifying aspects of the club, but that is ultimately not going to matter. Ole and his staff are not fit for purpose at the highest level of football, which is where we are meant to be.

If we sacked him, I doubt any other top division side in Europe would be interested in him, perhaps one or two at a push.

I'd love him to prove me wrong - but he won't.

Yeah, I mean all teams in the top leagues, some are badly run and will think he's a decent manager just because he's had the Man Utd job for this long :o

It's funny people say "we've tried the high end manager route and it didn't work" - Jose did what he usually does and LvG was just a bit mental.

That means we should just employ an ex-player instead? That no other manager can do a good job for us?! Just bizarre.

If you think about it, aside from Leeds and the latter part of the Newcastle game, all of our performances this season have been poor.

Almost all of our games in October and November are difficult - so that should be... interesting.

I don't expect the club to get rid of Ole (and all of his staff) unless things get dire, so we'll likely finish 4th-5th, no trophies, 50/50 as to whether we get out of the group in the Champions League.

Is that really an improvement on anything? No.

New contract for Mike Phelan (Carrick and McKenna to follow).

Suppose it won't make any difference if Ole was to be sacked but it's depressing all the same.

Interesting analysis from Carragher and Neville: the players don't work nearly hard enough for Ole, a good manager would find a way to make such a good squad work, it can be done. He's reached his ceiling as a manager and can't take us any further now. He can't just play McTominay and Fred and hope for the best as it doesn't work. Not that it wasn't obvious to almost everyone...

Neville understandably won't call for a change to be made, but you can tell he's given up on him.

I think almost everyone is in agreement now that he's quite frankly a low level manager with some world class players. Recent Man Utd fan polls I've seen have 90% of fans wanting him out.

This was interesting from an article I saw recently, on comparisons with Klopp (laughable as they are to start with really):

One of the cases for Solskjaer's defence has been a similar points record to the much-celebrated Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool - and the two face each other in a potentially pivotal clash at Old Trafford next Sunday.

In his first 104 games at Liverpool. Klopp won 196 league points, while Solskjaer has claimed 194 in the same time at United. Victory on Saturday would have had him ahead of Klopp's record.

But the problem for Solskjaer is that the pace gets a lot faster from this point on. In Klopp's next 123 Premier League games, he won 283 points at an average of 2.30 per game, up from 1.88.

In other words, after an encouraging start, Klopp took Liverpool to the next level.

This United team shows no signs of being anywhere near as good as Klopp's Liverpool, who won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

We are not going to be picking up any sort of pace, in fact, we are improving the squad and going backwards.

In terms of a replacement, the two main available candidates are not necessarily ideal, but both are a massive step up on Ole - not difficult I suppose. Zidane and Conte. I understand the reservations about both, but at this point I would be prepared to abandon the 'project' and appoint either. The season is not yet a write off, but it soon will be.

We'll no doubt somehow beat Liverpool which will buy him more time. Atalanta to come first though, tomorrow night...

I think if anything there will be a coaching shake up if things continue to get worse.

Yes, the coaching staff are yet another problem.

Ole will still be here until the summer at least.

Not sure why people make statements like this, you think if we're in the bottom half of the table and out of every competition in 8 weeks they'd still keep him? No chance.

Haven't a number of the coaching staff signed new contracts in the last few weeks?

Bizarrely, yes.

This is the thing. A good coach would find a way to make it work much better than it currently is.

The solution isn't just to throw more and more money at the problem. People wanted a right winger and a centre back, we got both of those, yet here we are - going backwards. Add someone like Rice for £80m, we still won't get anywhere.
