The Manly Shaving Thread

Guys, there were no Personna blades out here for cheap I'm afraid. Sorry I couldn't get you any.

I'm also about to order a new cream/soap - hmm what to choose!?

My Sensitive Proraso Shave Soap arrived yesterday from Niven & Joshua. It arrived in a black box marked with their name on it. Filled with foam packaging. Receipt was made with thick A4 paper. Nicely presented I must say even though its just packaging. I'm not sure how much profit they are making considering they are offering Quidco and 5% loyalty and free delivery.

Used it for the first time today. I must say it works pretty well. The smell is boring but it has to compete with Sandlewood which is possibly the ultimate smell for me right now. If anything it's like they got the ingredients, shoved them all together and then packaged it. No perfume added, I guess the end result is a more natural product.
I was surprised at how easy the stuff turns into a foam. It's much smoother than I have had from ToBS. I can't work out if its a soap or cream. Seem's to get catagoried in different ways on different sites but the box said it was a soap.
When you have it on your face it actually tingles. Makes for a comfortable shave. I found I had to top up on each pass so I guess the stuff will get used up fairly quick. Overall though I found it did leave a more comfortable shave. No irritation which is a good thing as usually I use a after-shave balm to sooth but today was in a rush so forgot. I don't feel any worse than normal though.

Final thought: Couldn't see how this could really make a difference for sensitive skin but actually it has. A good soap for those new to manly shaving and finding they are still getting irritation. It's cheap too!

I love this stuff, still use my Tabac everynow and again but this Proraso stuff is wicked, smells a bit strange but it doesn't linger after the rinse off so it's all good

I've restored my silver plated 1918 Gillette Single Ring

Before (just a normal clean up when it arrived)

After (baking soda and foil method x3, followed by a light polish)

Shaved with it for the first time last night, had a nice shave, its not as aggressive as my FaTip with Weber Handle, still very efficient though.

It made a change to use a light'ish razor.

I sent my Aristocrat #15 and 4x different Gillette OC heads off for a rhodium replate this morning.

Judging by all the soaps on the previous page, I take it you use a cut-throat Feek?

Nice job on the restoration Spaceman, how exactly does the foil and baking soda trick work?

Bought some l'Occitane shaving cream today and it will make its debut tomorrow. It's the first time in a long while that I've spent more than $20 on some cream as after trying pretty much all of the established and less well known choices over the last 10 or 15 years I've ended up using Proraso almost constantly.

Will update tomorrow :)

Nope, I just like using a different cream each day. I'm sure that they won't all get replaced as I use them up but hey, it's fun to have variation :)

Ah, i see. Having a 'few' choices doesn't hurt i suppose! :p

Have you tried a cut-throat? Takes some practice but it's worth the time and effort, and the end result is second to none IMO.

similar to the video above.

lined a bowl with foil, put the razor parts in it and tipped some bicarbonate soda in around the razor parts. tipped boiling water from the kettle on it all, then left to cool and repeat.

after that i gave it a light polish with Peek polish.

So I bought a Edwin Jagger DE89 and a 100 blades. I'm looking forward to the shave.

You won't dissapointed. It's a little more laborious than the Gillette Sensor/Mach 3/4 Turbo Hyper etc etc, though infinately more satisfying.
Just go easy at first, slow and steady. I've only had my DE89 a few months now and only once had the tiniest of nicks, I get the idea it is a very forgiving razor. Was actually getting up to speed, though not going to get too cocky again after slicing my ear just above above the lobe with my last shave. :)
Enjoy it mate.

Quick warning to anyone here wanting to try Wilkinson Sword blades (black plastic case), DO NOT BUY THEM.

Bought a pack yesterday and tried it today, had about 10 gashes on my face afterwards and I use Derby's and Feather's and none have cut me up so bad.

Worst razorblades I think i've ever had and i've tried a fair few brands. No wonder they were the only ones on display in Wilkinsons, should have known that you can only buy proper razors on-line.

Surly the same can be said for any blade? If you treat it aggressively it will bite you.
Of course but it's not just down to how you treat a blade - I know that there are certain blades that will nick me, no matter how careful I am with them. The same goes for some soaps, I can get what appears to be a nice thick, cushiony lather but I'll end up with one or two nicks. Life's too short to cut myself over and over again so I've given away the soaps that don't work for me and the same goes for blades that don't suit my face.
