The Manly Shaving Thread

Most supermarkets have DE blades hidden some place in the shaving area. They are normally branded to match the supermarket. They cost more, but aren't bad blades. The tesco ones are rebranded personna if I remember right. Creams, soaps, and brushes can all be had in supermarkets too.

Everyone likes different blades, but there isn't that much in it really. Online most places do sample packs so you can get 5-10 of each blade to try.

I got a Merkur 33C on Friday and had my first proper shave with it... amazing! First time in quite a while i've had such a close shave - my face looked noticeable cleaner. I found even with a fresh blade on my old 4 blade fusion it wasn't particularly close.

One thing I noticed is that after doing one side of my face straight after applying oil and gel/foam it was a lot harder than doing the other side - i'm guessing I need to wait some time for the beard to soften? The 2nd side of my face was amazing - couldn't even feel the thing! Glad I saw this thread :)

Try shaving after a wash or a shower/bath, the idea being you soften up the stubble & relax your face a bit before you start, then give it some good work with a brush & some cream which'll help even more.

Check out this guys channel on youtube for hints, he seems to know what he's doing - http://www.youtube.com/user/mantic59

Recently ordered myself a Merkur Futur after seeing the price hike on Fusion blades in Tesco. Bloody ridiculous how much they charge. I've seen DE blades as cheap as £2 for 10, so, even though the initial start up cost is about £40, I'm going to save a fair whack in the long run.

Will let everyone know what I think of the new razor once I get it. :)

Great shave this morning!

Parcel arrived yesterday from shavingshack with some new Taylors shaving cream and a selecting of blades. Gillette 7 o'clock, Derby, Feather and Israli.

Nice to be back on the Taylors, the other supermarkey stuff is dire in comparison.

Decided to try the Derby for a start. They feel thicker than the Persona blades I have, but boy are they better.

Anyone tried anything by BlueBeard from the shaving shack?

Just curious, but why exactly is a badger superior to synthetic? or isn't there, realistically, a big difference?

I'm gonna use this gillette proglide till the one razor (tight ********), they gave me is crap, then splash out on all the necessary gear. It looks like it can be quite expensive, but I can justify it because it's something I do on a daily basis.

The start up is more costly (I wouldn't say expensive) but blades cost pence going forwards.

So merkur 34c seems a safe bet to avoid all this shaving rash i keep getting.

New missus like clean shaven at all times and its a pita but needs must!!!
wheres the best place to get one online?

Just going to get razor for now as a bit short on readies.

I recently bought from nkdman.co.uk they seem reasonably priced, give you 5 five free blades with purchases of razors and are offering free delivery on all UK orders at the moment.

whats the best thing to use with it whilst i wait for some more money for a badger brush and shaving cream...

Ie what can i get in boots or super drug type places?

With regards to the razor you linked to, it's an edwin jagger DE89L and is well regarded as being a great shaver.

As for cheap blades have a look on the bay, i just got a mate 50 gillette yellows for £6.

Tesco do a Wilkinson Sword brush for £3.50, which is more than likely what I'll use until I can afford something decent. Obviously not going to be all that great, but it'll do for time being, I'm sure. I haven't looked in Superdrug or Boots yet, but they're more than likely have something similar.

I am so manly that I shave my legs. Unfortunately men's razors wear down too quickly for leg usage so I use a nice pink women's razor.

I have discovered a new razor which is really, really good.

My missus does some work for them and brought one home for me. After a couple of shaves I am a convert.

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5.

Okay, I've got some money (overdraft) and I'm going for it :D
Merkur 34c Heavy
Badger hair brush + cream.

Hate the razor I have atm and the blades cost as much as the body did within a few weeks.
Will report back when it comes.

mines all ready been despatched hope it arrived today! Who thought you could get excited over a razor.

:D swapping from a cartridge shave to a safety razor was a revelation to be honest. Its a pleasure to have a shave now plus the fact in the longterm I will save money. I read somewhere that there is a 4000% markup on cartridges
