Tried the whole safety razor thing a few years back but just didn't have the time in the morning and to be honest I hate shaving and it all seemed like too much hassle. Gillette Sensor Excel and whatever foam/gel is there. I shave in the shower.

Got my bits from tesco.

For my first attempt i was a hell of a lot less spotty and rashy looking........cant wait to have another go:D

Just got to say that after some thirty odd years of razor burn and spending a fortune on various aftershave balms i thought i would give a DE razor a go after reading this thread. I found an Edwin Jagger 89L in a local barbers and some Proraso soap, the difference is amazing. I have not had razor burn since although I must say I learnt a lot from the mantic59 videos on youtube.

Many thanks to all that have contributed to this thread :-)

I just use Mach III as it has always worked for me. I do however use some stuff called 'Prep Cream' for skin rash that a Saffa colleague gave to me. Burns a bit applying after I shaved but it leaves my skin crystal clear and smooth. I usually apply some before bed.

Just bought a Merkur 34C, some taylor of bond st cream and 10 Derby blades after seeing 6 proglide blades for £17. Gillette can sod right off tbh.

Just hope the hype is worth it. :)

I would say yes its worth it. I wont be going back to using a cartridge razor.
One thing tho, the derby blades IMO can be hit and miss. I have had a few dud blades. If you get one you will notice the difference straight away. Bin it and use another blade.

Mines slighty better with a 34c and im using wilkonson sword el cheapo brush and cream........

What can anyone recommend to me for when i next get some money....

Better brush and cream?

Should i be do anything before a hot shower as well? Any other creams?

Im still getting a few spots and that after wards.

BUT YES IT IS A LOT BETTER

Yeah I heard the Derby blades had roughly 1 in 5 that were a little suss but since they are popular and sold as 'beginner' DE blades I went for it. The feathers were tempting but think I'll get some practice in first.

Just had my first shave with the 34c and it definately took some time. The neck area was pretty tough and doesn't feel that 'close'. I expected a learning curve though so will stick with it for a while. Maybe I had a duff Derby... ;)

I've only just really started to get what you'd describe as a smooth shave & I've been using a DE for a good few years now, I used to only do 1 pass as multiple passes would wreck my face, but after sticking with it my face has got used to going in multiple directions & I'm getting a lot smoother shave.

If you thing you have a duff blade just ditch it & try another, you can be safe in the knowledge that it's not gonna cost a packet to do so.

Anyone know a good way to prevent Razor Burn?

I get it with my Electrical Shaver when I am shaving my Neck (I hate shaving my Neck) the only difference is; with a Wet Shave Razor I would sometimes draw blood in addition to the Razor Burn.

Any Products, Tips or other recommendations?

I like to use a nice flowerly facial scrub, then I lovingly apply some of my wifes ladies only shaving gel and then shave with her ladyshave, after which I like to effeminately apply some oil of olay.

Actually, I slap some cheap shaving foam on and drag a bic around my face, why? BECAUSE I'M NOT A FRUITER!

does anyone here ever shave in the shower by any chance?

Most the time, I find it easier.

I hate shaving, my stubble grows back every single day therefore having to shave every single day is such an annoying task. Also I use a Gillete Fusion Power blade and it just doesn't cut close anymore.

Does anyone know any other razors that will cut closer? If I leave it for more than a day I look like a tramp!

anyone use/tried the Philips HQ7380 7300 Series Rechargeable Rotary Shaver?

the one i use now is cheap and crap dosnt really work at all...

or recomend me a shaver?

This thread made me purchase:

Edwin Jagger 89DE Razor
Derby Blades.

Can I just say, been shaving with a DE for about a month and a half, never had the closest shave ever. Seriously. No stubble, annoying feeling of hair growing through, nothing. Takes a while, but you get better each time.

Although I would suggest not to rush, I was last night due to my birthday party - Nearly cut my lip open, got a little cut near my lip now. So be careful new comers!

For teenagers it's great too. Im 18 and it's amazing.
