hi guys,

Basically, I want to grow a nice set of sideburns, but when they start growing long they just look messy and unkempt.

How can I grow them but keep them looking trimmed and neat? I use disposables razors at the moment, and they're great for shaving, but no good for trimming. So far the only thing that I can think of is clippers, is there anything else?

What's the difference between shaving soap and shaving cream? I got a starter kit with cream that is pretty much finished so looking to purchase soon!

i use a "12 knife...
but seriously... it ****es me off, my rig is a gillette fusion with nivia shave gel/cream, and i get a little quarter inch circle of stubble on the bottom of my chin/jaw that is thicker than the rest...

For me, cream is nicer but soap is cheaper.

A tub of cream will set you back £10, but last two months (much better value than that foam in a can stuff i must add)

A bowl of soap will cost £15 but last... well in my case 2 years and counting, shaving every other day.

Whenever i'm visiting my parents i do steal the Taylor cream that my dad uses, but the soap is perfectly adequate it just doesn't smell as nice.

getting a good shave but still getting a slight rash afterwards then a bad rash 2 days after.

Anyone with any ideas?

Chaps, What is the best safety razor starter-kit to go for? I am sick to the back teeth of my dreadful Gillette vibrating thing. It's just awful. I am thinking cream over soap. Also Black Badger v Pure Badger?

Something like this?

Are you allergic to anything in the shaving cream/soap or the post-shaving balm etc?

How long have you been using your directional method of shaving? Are you going against the grain? Do you even know what your beard grain looks like?

Have you changed washing detergents or fabric conditioners? Could it be collar rash?

I assume you're changing your blades as required. You are, right? Are you using the same brand of blades and does a change make any difference?

Is this all the time or just now and again? If now and again, what are the things that you're doing differently?

Let us know how you get on :)

excellent choice to get started with. i got the 34cHD and its awesome. really well built imo. and i find derby blades perfectly adequate, i actually prefer them over the feathers.

not tried luxury cream yet though... i just use cheapy ingram blue/green or erasmic. i do have a tub of TOBS but i rarely ever use it over the tubes of cream. i don't tend to use my brush either, i get a perfectly good lather without using it :)

For a couple of days after shaving, the skin just under my chin is always very itchy. I've asked others and they experience similar things. Any way to prevent it? I've tried using lots of moisturising cream, that doesn't really help though.

Yeah, went for that set with Astra superior platinums & a pure badger brush. Hope I don't cut myself to bits :)

Is there a good electric trimmer for maintaining really short stubble? I have only heard about babyliss i-trim but the reviews are terrible.

you wont, unless you use the razor sideways ;) i havent cut myself once yet, unless its from taking the head off a spot, which does happen :s which reminds me, get a styptic pencil as well. :p
