If you thing you have a duff blade just ditch it & try another, you can be safe in the knowledge that it's not gonna cost a packet to do so.

It seems the first Derby blade was duff as my 2nd shave was much better. I did 3 passes, 2 down and 1 up and got a really nice result. Very happy. :)

Anyone get/got a patchy beard?
been part of the "stubble" crowed for a while and i like the look but suddenly i have 2 patch either side of my chin, 1 about 5p size the other a bit smaller, VERY annoying, dont think i can do anything about it :(

I had that and it went away after a few months. In the intervening time I just stuck to smooth shaven.

Wow, just used a DE razor for the first time, I got a Merkur 33c from Connaughts (service was excellent I must say £20 for the razor, free postage and packaging, order placed at 3pm friday and delivered saturday morning) I've ordered a brush and some soap from another retailer and it hasn't arrived so I popped down the local shop and just picked up a cheap erasmic brush and soap and even with the cheap stuff I can't believe how close or smooth the shave was. Slightly nicked myself once around the throat area but a quick dab with a styptic pencil and I'm looking exceptionally fresh faced and youthful!

Should have done it years ago.

After some practice I think I've mostly got used to DE shaving now. I've noticed my stubble seems... well more stubbly if that makes sense. I guess as the hair is cut a lot sharper than a cartridge razor.

I think I'm ready to take on the feather blades now. :)

Still going through the blade selection I got from the shaving shack...

I think the Israeli blades are vicious, really too sharp for me, ended up looking like I had tried to slash myself, no actual cuts, just took bits out of my neck..

Feathers are not too bad, Derby blades are nearer to Israeli,

not tried the 7'oclocks yet, are they any good?

I have changed cream to Taylors, which I had before and worked well, I was using a mix before, sometimes the palmolive (not that bad I thought)

But as I changed blades and cream at the same time, not sure if the cream or the blades are causing the bleeding look.....

Quick question. I prefer stubble, whats the best way to achieve this?

The Remington MB320C is the OcUK approved beard trimmer. I spec'ed it for my Brother in Law and he is very impressed with it. Can be bought for about £20 too.

Re. Murker blades, the Derby Extra blades are no where near as good as the official ones and I've got 100 of the things to get through!

Got fed up with paying near on £15 for a pack of 4 Gillette Fusion blades only to last me only 8 shaves in total before blunting all of them. I've been spec'ing the Merkur 37C for a while and finally took the plunge on Wednesday from The Shaving Shack, with the rest of the bits below, and it all arrived this morning:
  • Merkur 37C Slant Bar DE Safety Razor
  • Taylor of Old Bond St Shaving Cream (Sandalwood 150g)
  • Styptic Pencil
  • Shaving Shack "Buccaneer" Pure Badger Shaving Brush
  • FREE 10 Feather Double Edged Razor Blades
Haven't shaved since last Saturday and really had quite a thick growth on which probably wasn't the best way to start, especially being a DE virgin and also taking on the 37C from the off; however I went at my face for the first time with respect and after 4 slow passes with the supplied Merkur sample blade all I have to say is, "Wow!"

Just one nick below my left eye on the edge of the cheekbone but apart from that had a great shave. I have to say, I think with the thick hair that I seem to have the Merkur blade may not be quite sharp enough as I did get a very slight rash around the chin with a small amount of blood but I expect with some more time for my skin to adapt from the crap cartridge razor heads and with more experience it would probably be fine.

I'd say anyone looking at an aggressive DE razor don't be scared. The 37C is supposed to be harsh(?) but I coped so it can't be that bad.

Anyone got any tips on working with the Feather blades, are they really as sharp as they are made out to be? Lastly, I started with a downwards pass, moving to an upwards, then towards the middle and finally away. Is this the generally accepted pass movement method or does it really just depends on your own personal grain?

Generally I would say to go with the grain, across the grain and only then if you want closer, go against the grain.

At the end of the day everybody is different and you soon find out what does and doesn't work for you.

Was wondering what people think is better for sensitive skin? I get spots and ingrown hair from using gillette, so wondering if buying ones of these merkur razors or an electric one will cause less irritation?

I love my 33c merkur I use Mitchell's Wool Fat Shaving Soap and Merkur blades founds the derbys where not as good.

Anyone tried that bluebeards revenge soap?

Personally id look at gillette 7'oclock yellows, you can get 25 on the bay for £4. They're nearly as sharp as the feathers but much smoother to my skin, they work a treat with my slant bar.

And yeah tis a great razor, i have a gem micromatic which is meant to be harsh, but personally i prefer the slant bar as it flows, the gem is bit of a chisel.

Btw folks, if you buy a hydro 5 razor from tesco at £8.19 and run a price check, you get £8.48 back on double the difference as it's £3 in asda atm.

But be quick as it obviously only works at that price, you need to keep the receipt and put it in online.

once you get used to the de you'll find you get less irritation. Most important is getting a decent brush though. You can get a decent Omega for under a tenner.

Use athelete's foot cream. It contains steroids or something and is anti-fungal which is what can be the cause. I had a bald spot on my beard and my doctor suggested it. Grown back now; don't know if that's what helped but it at least felt better to be 'doing' something about it.

Tried mwf for the first time, superb soap really slick. Arko is pretty decent as well, bit funky on the scent mind.

Can anyone recommend a decent electric shaver (preferably wireless) for about £25 or less? I shave my face and head and it's costing me a fortune buying Mach 3 razors and i'm getting them in those bulky 16 quantity from Costco.

I'm think about investing in a DE razor. I've currently got a Mach3 that I also use to shave my head. Does anyone have any experience with shaving heads using a DE razor - are they any good?
