Also - Which blades? So much choice!

The thing with blades is at the start you just don't know which will suit you the best. I started with Derby's and found them to be good, a lot better than a lot of the reviews I had read from other folk. I then got a sample pack of blades and the first I tried was the Gillette 7 o'clock Sharp Edge (yellow) and I have only tried 1 other blade in that pack (Astra Superior Platinum, which I didn't like). The Gillette just seemed to go perfect with my skin/face and so I bought 100 of them :)

Like above, everyone likes different blades so you just have to try them. There isn't to much difference between blades really, you should be able to get a good shave from any blade with practice. Preparing your face and cream / soap are much more important. Getting lather right is the main thing, you need it wet enough that that get glide but not so wet that it dries out.

I always suggest to people to only change either the razor or lather in the first week or so. Much easier to work out if you are doing it right or not by only changing one thing at a time. Like I went back to shaving foam for a couple of weeks after getting poor shaves to start with.

Are you allergic to anything in the shaving cream/soap or the post-shaving balm etc?

How long have you been using your directional method of shaving? Are you going against the grain? Do you even know what your beard grain looks like?

Have you changed washing detergents or fabric conditioners? Could it be collar rash?

I assume you're changing your blades as required. You are, right? Are you using the same brand of blades and does a change make any difference?

Is this all the time or just now and again? If now and again, what are the things that you're doing differently?

Let us know how you get on :)

im using derby blades and a merkur 34c, when i used to use any traditional wet shaver i got a bad rash, this is greatly decreased with the new method but its still very visible and some times sore.

ill try arnica

When shaving last night, for some reason I thought of this thread (I think it was probably because I'm running out of my shaving gel...), odd that it was bumped up today!

I use Feather with my Merkur 34C after finishing my initial assorted sample pack.

I have now started using baby oil to lubricate my beard before applying shaving soap. This helps the blade to glide even better than before and in all honesty you probably don't need to apply shaving soap if you use enough oil. Cheaper than the rip off tiny bottles of shaving oil too. The only downside is cleaning the blade takes longer between strokes but if you add antiseptic to the water bowl you dip the razor in, then its not a problem.

Hi,

Long time reader first time poster etc yada blah.

I always preferred the Wilkinson Sword Quattro razers as I liked the additional single blade on the reverse side for a finer shave and noticed Gillette have the new Fusion with the same type of blade so checked it out and I am impressed. It does exactly as the advert says, glides! And the result is nicer than the Wilkinson Sword as well.

Shame Gillette blades cost a bit more than Wilkinson Sword ones but oh well.

If you want a cheap but good gillette, there is the gillette guard razor.

It's a single edge cart razor that oddly shaves like a de razor.

I got me two razors and 16 carts on the bay for £6

Do any of you shave yer bonce. I go quite low on my supertaper clippers, but im curious about shaving the whole lot off.

Anything i should expect, did you get much of a ribbing first time around?

I don't. I've been thinking about it. You can get some special razors that will easily fit your fingers for better control.

Headshave yeah but i don't fancy it. Besides i have a ton of shaving gear here, more that anyone in this thread id imagine.

Im thinking of using my gillette guard razor, as it's a cheap cart razor.

But i have a new muhle r41 coming that's just been released, so i might relegate my bostonian, ocmm or slant for headshaving duties.

Im more curious as to what people thought when they made the switch.

Plus i have a ton of de blades to use up, and headshaving would mean i use them up twice as fast, along with the soaps which would be ideal for me.

I like to think im not ;)

But thanks all the same.

37g slant, it's gold plated though merkur's plating of late leaves a lot to be desired.

I will be after a pomco or hoffritz slant in the future, as back then they were made far better. Nowadays it's all about profit.

Oh trust me, that's not my entire collection, just a few bits i have pictures of.

The last pic is mwf, which should look like this for those that say the lather looks poor. ;)

Anyone recommend a decent electric shaver to keep a short stubble? Around the £30 mark would be lovely but could probably go higher if needs be. Read so many mixed reviews on the web would be nice to get some first hand opnions.
