Personna are terrible and there's a reason why they are so cheap. Israeli are better, much better actually, but I always advise Feathers. They're pretty much my go-to blade.

Your shaving cream is probably less important than your shaving technique when it comes to razor burn. Trumpers, Proraso, Anthony Logisitics - they'll all do much of a muchness. Google Mantic if you haven't already.

Watch and learn.

Use one of these for shaving. Closest shave I've ever had! :D

Haha kidding, I'd rather not slip and slice my jugular open. I use disposable bic razors with supermarket branded gel. No irritation, and I get a close enough shave. Works for me.

Also, anyone got any recommendations for a shaving cream that helps stop razor burn? or any tips in general to help stop it.

Thanks.

As Magnolia mentioned it will most likely be your technique rather than the cream. Maybe the razor is too agressive, or you're pressing too much. Don't try and lop it all off in one pass and use a good quality, alcohol free aftershave balm.

I don't really suffer from burn, apart from occasionally on my neck when I'm being a little haphazard but I hear these work well for post shaving.

Maybe others on here have experience of these?

Yes I just got an alum block and am a recent convert to DE shaving with an Edwin Jagger after watching geofatboy's videos on youtube.

Right its time for me to step up into the manly world of proper shaving. I have been shaving since I was about 16 to get rid of what was the bum fluff growing on my face at the time. But now my stubble is getting thicker after 4 years and I'm finding my Gilette razor is causing me quite a bit of tug even after changing the blade and I'm not really enjoying shaving any more.

When pay day rolls around I'm going to kit myself up with all new gear but what to get! I see a lot of people on here have got a Merkur so I guess I will be best off with one of those. Was looking at the 23c long handled version as I think I will prefer the longer version, anyone had any experiences with these?

Now on to shaving gel/foam. I currently use king of shaves generic stuff, I find it doesn't give me any irritation when shaving with it at the moment but if there is anything better that you guys can recommend then I guess I'll be happy to pay for it. I think I would prefer to have gel rather than foam as I just get on with it better I guess.

After shave treatment I just use the Nivea post shave balm that cools my skin down and then about 30 mins later I put on some generic moisturiser. I'm not really looking to spend any more that £40 on everything to get me started

if thats what you think you'll prefer then go with it, can always "adjust" to a shorter grip by holding the handle higher up at a later date.

as for your current shave treatment, and your budget, i'd stick with it for the time being, as you say it doesn't cause any irratation no reason to take a chance to start off.

i'd go with the 23 long handle and a variety pack of blades and see how it goes.

My facial hair is so annoying, it grows back insanely fast, I have to shave pretty much everyday and it's become far too tedious and is ruining my skin. Plus I can't seem to shave all of the hair off my face, I'm still left with some at the end.

Is there anything that can shave closer than Gillete razor blades and that can also leave a bit of stubble so I don't have to cut close to the skin?

I prefer to be clean shaven but would also consider having a bit of stubble if it means I don't have to ruin my skin :p

I don't want to spend a whole lot though..

Just ordered some Feather blades from the Shaving Shack...the mekur one supplied was dreadful, so I'd advise people just throw it away and get on with using whatever they want. Astra's have been solid performers so far, but could do with the little bit closer shave...we'll see how it goes. May well just be my technique

Thanks sounds good, like I said it doesn't cause irritation but I do find it painful to shave every now and then unless I end up spending a fortune on blades which I guess would be my main reason for getting a proper razor; it would be an investment and save me money in the long run.

How often does everyone change their shaving blades? I use fusion blades (yes I know I should buy Merkur or whatever) and I find that after 3 or 4 shaves it becomes incredibly irratating to shave, my face flares up and it stings for hours so I have to use a fresh one. I would have thought at £2.50 a pop you'd get more out of the blades or is it just a problem I have?

I have the same problem, the blade only stays sharp for 3/4 shaves then I have to replace it. It's too expensive to keep using these fusion blades and to be honest apart from the first 2/3 shaves the rest of them are rubbish, I don't get close at all.

I'm tempted to buy a Merkur 33C for £22.45, then buy the sample pack of blades and see what's best.

Are these blades really that much better than the other ones (especially the fusion power blades)?

On http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk/ the Feather blades are £3.50 for 10 blades, that seems like a fantastic price considering a lot of people on here say how close and great the shaving is but how long would a single blade last?

Yes once you find the blade and razor for you.

I get six good shaves from a shark super chrome.

Right, that's quite good then, a pack of 10 will last me over 2 months then!

I've never looked at buying a proper razor before so when you say find the right blade..what are the differences between the Merkur/Parker selections? I've seen that there are numbers next to the razors, what does that mean?

The Merkur 33C is £22.45 which seems good, is that worth getting?

Not sure what you mean about numbers next to the razors?

Merkur is just better quality, that's really what your playing for.

Plus it'll be a better known razor, so people can better suggest one to start with. Most would suggest the merkur hd anyway, least for a newbie.

33c yeah that's a good razor to star with, as for blades id look at a sampler pack.
