not tried feathers ?

I shave from my neck up to my chin and from my fore head down to my chin direction on my face

not sure why people buy derbys, i find they are not as good as astra etc
lasted only 1-2 shaves where as israli and astras last 3-4 for me?

I've had a pack of 100 Derbys and now down to the last 10. They seem fairly consistant but sometimes you get a bad blade which just seems to drag down my skin. I think I'm going to get a selection pack to see if I can find something better.

I've also been using Boots brand shaving soap for a while, now I need some more, what do you guys recommend? :)

Got some new gear at the weekend from Body Shop - Maca Root Shaving Cream and Maca Root Face Scrub - using the scrub and then the shave cream is providing me with a very pleasant finish on the old boat race!

i have only used a razor blade a few times and have always used an electric, because of this i have these terrible non hair patches on my face. but i don't realy care that much. I have shaved with a normal razor and have no problems doing that, it just seems so much quicker to use eletric as i am lazy. I never used anything but cold water after shaving.

Hey guys, I have two questions I quite like to ask in this thread:

1. I currently use a Wikinson Sword DE razor. Will I benefit from a smoother shave by just changing the razor to Merkur as recommended for the chap above? What makes the Merkur a much better razor?

2. I have used el cheapo blades I got for Wilko for a few years now. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend better blades that I can use with my double edged razor. What is the life span of this? Will I see a much closer and smoother shave by just changing blades and keeping the above razor? Do I need to change both?

Snap, exactly the same situation. Moved to el cheapo Sainsbury's blades though. Appears they are Dorco blades from a quick google.

Well I ordered Derby Extra Stainless Steel Double Edge Safety Razor Blades. Hopefully they will be better that the ones I get from Wilko!

I will see how these blades go and then buy a merkur around Christmas time as a treat!

Real n00b question.

I have no problem shaving with Mach 3 other than the price (no rash etc). Is it possible to switch to, say, a Merkur and carry on slapping on some Gilette to shave? Or does the whole process change to brushes and different materials?

You can use whatever you like for cream etc and there are no hard and fast rules as to what you must use.

Most people find however that the biggest change to traditional wet shaving is the use of a badger brush and a good quality cream, along with the correct techniques and face prep. Shaving becomes a pleasure when done well. You just have to go through a little relearning in the process.

My personal advice would be to change to a badger brush and good cream, then buy the razor.

Oh yeah and my new, okay old 1961 Gillette Slim Adjustable arrive today. :)
