If the blades are expensive at 30 for ~£7 can you suggest somewhere to buy some from at a decent price?

£10- 100 Derby blades at Timothy Edwards

They are good imo, but you'll want to sample a few before committing. I believe I got a good deal on Feathers at the rainforest. It has been a while since I needed any though.

I have heard good things about Gillette Super 7s, but they would have to be special to get me away from these Feathers :p

Some Feathers dropped through the letterbox this morning, just after my shave though so couldn't try them out. Tomorrow should be interesting, either super smooth and close or a bloody mess!

I expect this question has been asked and answered before, but I am not looking through 40 pages. Doesn't using one of those old style razors cut you silly?

That's the only thing putting me off getting one I guess.

Thanks to the help in this thread I've ordered some stuff:

Merkur 34C
ShavingShack Badger brush
Clear drip stand
Alum block
10x Feather blades (free!) - should be 30+ shaves?

I've ordered via quidco with 8% cashback and with first class delivery so I should expect them tomorrow or Monday. I'll let you know how it feels coming from a Boots own brand / Wilkinson Sword 5 blade cartridge.

I've got a lot of soaps and moisterisers to use up first so I'm going to use them with the brush and then get some wool fat when I need more blades to trip the £10 to get some more free blades.

Just use the bare minimum of pressure. Let the razor do the work. They are more comfortable than any other blade for me.

I can't wait until I get my Taylor's cream tomorrow. As much as I liked the Truefitt and Hill creme, I'm not such a fan of their soap.

I suffer chronically with rash and ingrown hair, i have to have at least 4 days growth before i can even think about a decent close shave. ive tried everything, oil, foam and gel and it makes little to no odds, would one of these shavers make a difference? really sick of looking like a hairy bum before i can shave my face without fear of bleeding spots all over.

Followed this advice, used hardly any pressure. I use a Murkur Futur so I dialled down the aggression a bit with the Feathers. Smooth! A little nick, but that's ok, alum block sorted that.

Just shaved off my crappy teenage chin strap, the problem is that Gilette foam makes me itch so much. Even when I put it on it burns.

Anything out there for sensitive skin?

It's worth a try surely :) . I used to get ingrown hairs and shaving rash with the multi-blade nonsense. No rash and certainly no ingrown hairs now.

My slant bar has arrived and it gave me a lovely shave (Feather blade). Less aggressive than my Futur on max and easier to use in my opinion. I'm glad that I have shaving cream again now :)

Number 25, I recommend a decent shave cream. You can sensitive ones with little to no fragrance too.

Not many people like Merkur blades. Then again that option is normally formed from a first shave. I wouldn't worry too much about it, blades aren't really all that different imo There is sharp and then super sharp. I'd say what you do has more effect than what you use. Perp and technique are the big things, products while different don't make or brake a shave.

I dont understand why people like derby blades, I find them quite scratchy, prob 1 good blade in 3.

Im liking Astra and Gilette 7's. I bought my gear as a kit from a chap on AVforums, with a load of different blades, so im getting a chance to try a few diff ones, i started with a Parker long handle, and im now trying a Merkur slant, its bloody good, but you have to be careful with it, as its heavy and you can easily put too much pressure on the final 'against' pass and end up with a red face for a few hours.

After reading through this thread I've decided to join the ranks of real shaving!

Few questions - I've noticed some numbers on the head of my razor, on both pieces. And similar numbers on the blades. I'm assuming they match up, but I didn't realise there was a correct way round for the head piece of the razor, or the blade? Can someone fill me in on this.

Also, how long will it take for the hairs on my badger brush to fully soften, I read it would only take ~2 shaves. I've done 4 and they still feel quite bristly on my face.

Here's my gear!
