Is that a best badger?

That'll be why, it's the cheap option you need a good super or better a two band, you get a good stiff backbone with lovely soft tips.

But like anything good they cost, mine's a two band tubby 1 from new forest brushes.

This super would be a good choice, as tubby's are long sold out.

Yes it is. But it's hardly the cheapest one available - £30. So I wouldn't expect it to feel stiff on my face. Maybe with a £7 bottom end brush... I guess I just need to use it more?

Can't go wrong with a Gillette Fusion Pro Glide & some Nivea for Men foam.

I used to try 'proper' blades & soap, but you'll soon get fed up with them if you have to shave a lot!

The numbers on the blade have nothing to do with how you use it, they are the machine number that ground the edge. You can put it in anyway that fits.

It's strange because the main body of my razor has 4 on one side, and the head piece has 2 on one side. And the blade has 1, 2 on one side and 3, 4 on the other. You'd think the same machine would grind all the edges?

Well you can, and apparently, you are :p

But in all seriousness, I have actually saved a fair bit my shaving in the traditional way, and I'm also enjoying the process a great deal more.

Cheaper (Razors + Blades)
More comfortable (Less rash-irritation/ingrown hairs)
Enjoyable

The foam/gel (I used Nivea stuff myself) is supposedly not too great for the skin. A £7 tub of Taylor's gives me superior results and last a long, long time. Too long in fact to remember when I opened my first tub. There's a massive saving to be had over the cans of Nivea/Gillette stuff in any case :)

Speed is certainly the main issue that I can imagine people objecting too. Well, you just need to practice. I can now shave very quickly and proficiently in the mornings with my DE razor.

Cheapest would mean a synthetic, in relative terms a best badger is at the bottom rung of the ladder, it's why it's a part of the starter pack.

And also why i always suggest the super badger, best can be a bit prickly.

But four shaves isn't enough to break it in, try 20 then you're getting close. But if you really want a nice brush, grab that super i posted, i have the tubby and it's so soft and dead easy to lather with, you'll enjoy your shaves much better for it, and at £35 it's dirt cheap.

If you really want more info on it try searching badger and blade. Folks were so interested in what the numbers meant they asked people that work in the factories. I think it likely is one machine but 4 bits that do each part of the edges.

It ain't going to do any harm if you don't believe my explanation and line up the numbers so do whatever you like.

Can you explain the two band hair please, from what I know pure<best<super<silvertip

Where does two band fit into that, and some of the brushes on that site are super and two band!

GF's getting me a few bits and bobs for my birthday, and the razor comes with 5 Derby Double Edge Razor Blades. Been looking about at sample packs for the blades and not really found anything too amazing, Traditional Shaving and Connaught seem to be the best for these. Any recommendations?

I also occasionally have issues with ingrown hairs, for example I have had an almost boil like lump due to this for the last few days. I've seen a few creams that are supposed to help but at £20 it seems a bit excessive..

Last thing, I have a couple of moles on my neck which I have to be careful shaving over/around. Should I carry on using my Wilkinson Sword over these areas or will the Merkur Futur be ok, as long as I am extra careful?

Right this is where it can get confusing.

You are right with the grades, each being finer but you get ones that buck the trend.

This is the two band, named as such because there are just two colour bands instead of three. It means you get hair that's closer to the top of the strand.

So you should get a brush with plenty of backbone, with lovely soft tips, they are usually a best or super grade wise, it's confusing i know.

You hear many folk rave about a two band, and rightly so my best brush is a two band.

You sure that's not one of those razors that you can adjust?

They change the angle of the blade in the razor head iirc.

My Edwin Jagger badger brush has moulted! I am now using a men-u bristle brush from Boots and it is great, stiffer than badger which causes erectness of the arrector pili muscles in the face.
This makes your hairs stand on end for a closer shave.
Anyhow it was cheap, came with a stand and does the job!

Managed to drop my Edwin Jagger badger brush last night and the hand grip shattered. Pretty gutted to be honest.

Should I get the same again or try something different?

Hmm, I'll have to put a decent brush on my Christmas list.

In other news I am running out of shaving foam and happened to find a tub of Wilkinson Sword soap for £2. I know it's not the best but for £2 I thought it was worth a punt.
