^ Chimp Spanner would have been my suggestion, as would Animal as Leaders.
Other than that Scale the Summit, Behold ...the Arctopus, Dysrhythmia and Russian Circles.
Periphery also released a special edition version of their S/T album which was purely instrumental.
It's not particularly easy when you limit yourself to just instrumentals.

Look for Drewsif Stalin on Bandcamp if you like your instrumental prog stuff

An insomniacs narrative is the name of the album ive listened to. Not bad for a young man who records in his bedroom

Also, i think you might be able to get the firs tesseract ep, concealing fate without vox

^ Damn you, just came in to post that :D I'm very impressed considering the ages of some the kids involved.

Interesting... Thanks! I actually saw Animal as Leaders in Reading a couple of years ago. Was pretty good from what I can remember.

What do you people think about the new Dream Theater album?

I enjoy them casually and this is my second DT album (systematic chaos the other one I have), this is a lot more song based although the last song is 22 minutes long :O. The other songs average about 5-6 minutes which I gather is short for DT.

I must say I enjoyed systematic chaos more but this is good and unfortunately yes you can hear the absence of portnoy...less flair more rhythmic drumming. The music is very "toe tappy" is the best I can describe it.

I read a comment on youtube that they were john petruccis backing band, and I have to say that statement almost rings true on this album. Not in a bad way exactly but the lead guitar seems too high in the mix on this album.

I have to say track 4 "enigma machine" which is instrumental doesn't do anything for me, and I'm extremely glad to hear labrie again on track 5.

Just got the new Tyr and Fates Warning albums, Fates Warning is growing on me but the Tyr is awesome!

I had heard individual songs from them on youtube but never a full album until now.

I'm not sure what sub genre they are, to me it just sounds like metal but I think they might be viking metal.

Just noticed how good the bass playing is.

did any of you folk know about this fest

http://www.northerndarkness.co.uk/

they have had to cancel and i'm meant to be going (hotel booked etc)

any other gigs in Newcastle that weekend??

i think Sunday was a bad day, Sat would have been better, but still the lineup was great, really surprised there wasn't the interest

Yeah that was what put me off it being on a sunday was pretty daft was a quality line up as well

Agreed Valkyrja is an amazing album.

Viking metal is brilliant, check out Turisas:

Newly discovered stuff, the singer played a part on Tyr's new album.

Really REALLY loving Scar the Martyr...drummer from slipknots side project and quite a few relatively well known people in it.

This aint half bad either.

I totally forgot about the new Fates Warning album up until today (I remember last reading a couple of months back that it was still in development and that was it!) Anyway, I've just spent the last hour listening to it - and I must say, really like it. It's great to see them back again :)
