The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

Huge pics at top, and cropped ones further down the thread.

The problems it has is the capacitor, and I think there is an issue with the very high corsair mem (stuff with lights on)

This is the other issue I have seen with it.
Posts like that seem rare, but I think you can see what the offending cap could do.

Yes, Corsair XLPRO is high, lucky i have the XL wich has standard heat-spreader size.
There are no pics in this thread that clearly show that the GFX should fit fine, when it should. So ill wait and see.
Was the other issue something to do with the pressure down on CPU ? I didnt get it fully from that thread. He used another MB.

He just had a problem with the clip, which stopped the cooler sitting flat on the CPU.
You might get the same with the diode hitting the cooler, if you didn't bend it enough.

I have seen others say it's not the best design clip around, but he had real grief with it.

This is a good design (IMO), as it uses screws to pull it down square.

The only comment on here is..

K8N Neo2 Platinum Not Compatible (caps mechanically obstruct pipe.)

If it obstructed the AGP slot, then it would be totally unsuitable, as you can't bend those.

I am just trying to point out the possible problems with the XP-120 on this board.
Even tho bluemoonmcfc has had no problems, there is a thread on the MSI forums where someone fitted one, as his temps where higher then then stock cooler.
It was only when someone told him about offending cap, that he realised the problem. (cooler not sitting flat on chip)

You could just cut a bit out of or squash offending pipe on cooler; problem solved.
Junior hacksaw or mole grips required :)

Yes yees :) i think i will saw a bit so that it dont touch the cap.

I got this response from [email protected]:

Hi,

The heatpipe loop will interefere with the big capacitor in between socket and AGP. Severe tilting is required in order to fit as proven by many users. But the risk is yours. And as always we do not recommend severe tilting capacitors.

9NDA3+ will take XP-120 but you will lose Dimm #1. However, this is not a DDR2 mobo, so I guess it's okay with you??

Thank you for choosing Thermalright!

I didnt like that the EPoX mb blocks one Dimm slot cuz in the future i want to upgrade memory to 2GB.

SATA issues

Has anyone had any SATA issues with ths board.

I just got mine today and have installed Windows twice now thinking it was a Windows issue(just gone to XP for the first time)

Its sees my first drive no problem at all and installs XP on it fine but I plug in my second SATA after finishing the Windows install off and it shows the other drive in the bios, device manager but does not show it in My Computer,if I go into Disk management its there but again I cant assign it a drive letter and it tells me its not allocated.

The other weird issue is the drives both show in the taskbar as USB devices and if I click them I can unplug them as you can a normal USB device

Other than that it seems fine.

Oh yeah running the 5.10 Nvidia drivers and bios 1.2

Cheers

Steve

Err if you added a second drive, you won't see it in My computer until it is partitioned and formatted which you do in Disk management.
The quick way to Disk management.

Start > run and type diskmgmt.msc
Look here under "How to install, partition, and format a Serial ATA drive in Windows XP".

SATA drives are removable, hence you see them in taskbar.

Sorry I didnt make myself clear.

The drive I was trying to get to was already formatted etc and had previously been in use this morning as I was using it as a file store.

I formatted the wrong drive by mistake in my rush to build the pc back up again as I had not marked each specific drive as they are of the same capacity and make, you live and learn dont you lol.

Thank god for backups

Well I have had no end of problems with this board.

I installed the board with little mishaps and ran some benchamrks to get a couple of random restarts. The temperature guages were very much out of sync. The bios would say one thing, corecell another, and my experience with other systems suggested both were way out - motherbaord temp of 19c?! With central heating on in the house.

I updated the bios to 1.3 and the temperature problems remain the same. The random reboots have increased. I reckon the board is shutting down at a prescribed temperature despite my system clearly being well below that temp.

I have also noticed the dreaded 'checksum rom bios error'. Oh joy. RMA to Asus for me.

Am I getting confused or isnt this a MSI board, why would Asus want it :p. I've had this board for a couple of months now and its been excellent, no problems whatsoever. Just a quick question though, are there two sata controllers on it? one by nvidia and one by VIA or are all 4 by nvidia.

This mobo is silly.....some times when i boot up its as if i dont have any usb's so iv gotta keep restarting till they are showing...ide's are abit funny 2..some times i see them others thy just not there....maybe the Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 nForce3 Ultra (Socket 939) Motherboard (MB-018-GI)
would have been the better board for me...

Rick

I flashed to the 1.41 beta bios that was linked on this forum the other day. I flashed using a floppy the old-fashioned way. Originally I flashed from 1.2 to 1.3 using the live update and then the problems appeared.

It seems to be pot luck with all s939 boards. I have persevered with this mobo and after 5 days of annoyance it seems to be doing rather well *touch wood*

rofl, i take it all back. I have jsut started to get the random reboots and now the agp slot appears dead. That's enough tweaking for me, I will try another board. Heh
