I'm using the latest certified nvidia driver for graphics. The motherboard drivers are the ones from msi.

Get the newest chipset drivers from guru3d:

Worth a try.

jo0ls: Which bios does your ultra have ?
That used to be a prob with earlier ultra bioses ... setting 2D/3D speed the same and making sure it sticks was the usual cure.
Also check anti-virus and firewall software may be the cause ...

2Thumbs: The board I recieved today shipped with 1.4, mine shipped with 1.3 and I flashed to 1.36b

Hmm, I am using on board sound, and one of the lan ports, the other is disabled. I'll switch off fast writes. Ram is in slots 1&2.
On another note I tried using all four banks yesterday with 4*512 corsair low latecy ram (2225). It didn't work very well. It would occasionally boot at 400, but usually failed. At 333 it was tricky to get it to boot as well. I'll be using the memory in another board shortly, just thought I'd give it a try. I'm using 2 banks atm.

Just about my last question, I know this is kinda the wrong thread, but anyone know if the goop with the xp120 is any good? Didn't seem good, I'm just trying to avoid the hassle of resitting the xp120 on this board, but if it's that much worse then I really ought to.

Sound is now utterly stuffed after playing with drivers too much. No audio device present. Going to reinstall and use the nvidia drivers from the start. Bios is 1.4, what is 2D/3D speed?

2D/3D speed is set from the nvidia cp, after using the coolbits utility.
You will see your graphis card clockspeed, and you will have a value for 2D and one for 3D, ensure these are both set the same as your 3D speed , apply the setings andd be sure they have stuck ... then try out some games, if you have cured the pausing tick the box to select apply at startup.

I`m getting weird readings on temps from bios... and when the OS is loaded I`m getting cooler temps than before... its like the temps aren`t being read correctly...

in bios the temp starts at 1C on CPU and then flicks to 255C but shows a constant 75F the heat sink and fan are fine... the NB reports no fan rotation when it is and a temperature of 115C when its normally 25C but shows a constant 100F...

When win2k3 server is running its showing temps of 33-37 on cpu and 25 on NB

Any clues as to why its doing this? I`m not OC'ing at all....
The board came with BIOS 1.2 and I haven`t flashed it...

The 1.4 bios sorts out the temp readings a bit, but my board is awful at reporting temps, even with the latest bios.

Yep, Temp variation and inaccuracy is a very common issue with this mobo, nothing to worry over.
TBH I would use a later bios, unless you have a raid array configured ... that might not be so good, as it may need re-creating ... thats why mine is staying on bios 1.36 ;)
1.4 seems pretty good, might be worth your while flashing to that.

ok so I flashed to 1.4 and looked at it it didn`t do too much to resolve it... it freezes the BIOS if I watch the temps for more than 10 seconds... and I switched off the computer whilst going off to have my dinner... just switched on and now it`s beeping at me... with a two tone beep which fluctuates every 0.5 seconds approximately... any ideas? It`s been fine all week since I built it :o(

EDIT: I watched the NB and cpu fan on startup... seemed fine so I let it boot and checked temps and it was fluctuating badly in Nvidia system utility so i checked the fans and the NB fan was not rotating... so i imediately shut down... as a testing i switched on watching the NB fan and it rotates but stops before the screen comes up... so... any ideas?

EDIT: EDIT: Uplugged everything and started it and its functioning... is a Enermax 600W Noisetaker addiquate for 2x 200 GB sata drives 2x 120GB pata drives a GFX card, a wifi card... and two cd drives, and 4 LED fans?

gforce 6800 ulra

using on board sound

Basically games will freeze for 10 seconds or so frequently and then continue. Makes Counterstrike:source a no-no. Other games freeze too. Windows and Apps are stable. I beleve the error has been seen elsewhere with the nforce3 chipset but I am just starting to troubleshoot. I'll try disabling sound and see where that gets me, I've had bad EAX experiences enough to start blaming it immediately.

hi mate not had any of the problems above and i have used the beta nforce driver 6.14 the only differnce on system is an ati 9800 pro card and no raid. problem could be in your bios the way its set up or do you have a beta bios i am using the 1.4.

Reinstalled XP, with onboard sound disabled. I used latest nvidia drivers for the chipset (not guru3d ones) and a soundblaster audigy card - and its still freezing. Aargh. I'll try the beta drivers.
Oh 2D/3D are the same.
Bios is 1.4

Problem solved...

I switched my fans from being in the motherboard to straight from the PSU... mean more cables to interupt airflow but now I am running at 30-32C on air compared to 35-40C interesting difference :D

I am curious though if this incident may have damaged the board.... it was probably only in this state for a minute or less... any thoughts waould be greatly appreciated :D

Switched through various graphics drivers, 71.40 forceware from guru3d is much improved, but not cured. The freezes are shorter and not as frequent. Guess its the 6800 ultras fault then. I was going to remove the wireless card to see if it was the cause.
I also tried the new official driver just released on guru3d but it froze more than usual.

One thing to note ... if you check the IRQ of the gigabit (not Nvidia) LAN ... its sharing with the AGP
For me it doesn't cause issues, but that is something to be aware of .. especially as you cant change it, it would mean disabling that ob lan.
Also .. a friend had similar problems with just one game ... the xtreme modified 71.20's cured it for him .. just do a google search to find them.

Turns out to be bios settings and the 6800 ultra, common problem. Needed agp4x8x, agp apeture 512, fast writes off. Not sure if the driver matters.

edit:
reinstalled, with bios set the way that works, and used the chipset driver from the msi downloads section, and the latest nvidia driver from their website and it all works. So beware using an xfx 6800 ultra with this board - it needs agp speed set to 4x8x, fast writes Off, and the agp aperture size set to 512.

I`m having a problem with my board... sometimes the Northbridge Fan fails to start... I know it might invalidate my board warranty but would anyone just recommend that I try the Zalman Northbridge heatsink with a fan near it to save me from keep checking the current fan is spinning everytime I reboot or cold start? (I don`t particularly want to wait up to 5 weeks for a replacement board)

A passive NB cooler should be fine, the NB doesn't seem to get hotter than any other chipset. It will get in the way of a 6800 with an arctic cooler though.
