The paxpowers are ATX2.0 compliant so will have a 24 pin connector, not sure if they still fit a 20 pin socket (with the extra four pins hanging over) I think they do. Ask before you buy one, don't want to waste your money :)

Paxpowers are good for the money, The wifes Neo2 is running on one of the 460W Akasa Paxpowers, mine is on the Enermax Noistaker 600W.

They have a 24 pin to 20 pin adaptor, so no worries there :)
The Enermax have a unclippable extra 4 pin plug for both types.

I wouldn't think the PSU would be the cause of your lockups (but you never know) ... try removing the dvd drive first, and see how it goes ... save you splashing out just yet.

Would a lack of power cause the comp to totally freeze up then? Its the most annoying thing because the only way to restart is is to keep press of the on button and then turn it on again when it goes off. Windows doesn't come up with any error messages or anything :( .

Anything else come to mind people? (I want to cover every possibility!)

Watercooling

Have you got a fan attached to the header?

Usually causes boot problems, but maybe some heat sensor is jumping in.
Have a look here and note.. <good info in general in fact.

TIP: Cpu fan header must be connected, if not the pc could experience boot problems

I suppose lack of power could do this, but you should be able to replicate it.
Does it do it under load etc.

Antec have admitted to some sort of error, but the norm for that is boards that don't post.
Thinging you ought to try memtest out as well.

Hmm memtest uses little power, so would be interesting if that stalled the machine.

Hey.

I am considering the Neo2 but just a bit of advice needed. It'll be my first build and after browsing through the Motherboard section, it appears the Neo2 is a bit fussy. Saying that, i also know when its working, the performance is incredible.

Now advice needed, is the Neo2 suitable for a first time builder, worth taking the risk? :)

If its any help, i'll be using a Winchester 3500+.

Thanks

Yes definetly,

You have a wealth of experience here for any issues you might have.

At stock - the board is rock solid so you wont have any issues there, any problems you might have overclocking ......we'll help ya :D

And i thank you kindly for curing my curiousity ;) Well, i'll read through the whole thread now, only done about 1/2. Try and find a cooler and i'm off to order

You'll see me posting frantically in about a couple of weeks time or so freaking out :o

Update on my computer for anyone that wants to know :). Left my computer on aquamark before i went to uni and that didn't crash it. Its been going for a good 5 hours without crashing now...:D

ok have finally now decided to order one of these am i right in the following

i am getting a dedicated soundcard so

i already have the 5.10 chipset drivers on a disk which i use for my asus nf2 a7n8x e deluxe

so i just load these on but untick the boxes that show ide driver and sound drivers and also disable onboard sound in bios

where it comes to using net i see there are 2 ports one realtek and one nforce so with the 5.10 installed that will be ok but how do you know which is which lol

and finally well nearly

i have just bought a ps2 keyboaed a logitech ultra x anyone know of any issues with this one as i read there are a few with ps2 keyboards

also where is the best place to find how to fit the chip with stock h/s as i am use to the spring 3 pin push on jobbys (want to be absolutley sure of what i am doing

also any one have screenshots of the bios screens so i can familerise myself with them

am going to be putting the following in it can you see any probs

tagan 480w psu
2x512 meg geil value 3200 ram dual channel
liteon dvdr drive
soundblaster 5.1 or audigy
120 gig seagate barracuda normal ide drive
geforce 6600gt agp card

thanks for taking the time to help in advance

just uncheck the souncard drivers when installing the 5.10's don't uncheck the ide, when its installing it will ask you about the nvidia SW driver option, I personally decline that part, but others prefer them.
You will need dx9 on before the 5.1's will install.
and you will need the mobo cd for the driver for the realtek netcard.
The nvidia is the top socket, realtek is the lower one.

Stock heatsing install instructions are in the retail pack ... but its very obvious anyhow... easier than the old method.

I have a usb MS desktop, but I use the adaptors so the mouse and keyboard are in the PS2 .. no probs here.

I would also recommend turning fastwrites off, setting agp to 4x/8x (not using auto).

And finally, install your soundcard in the centre PCI slot.

As for your choice of PSU ... personaly I would go for the akasa 460W, or Enermax Noisetaker 485W units over the Tagan.

thats great mate cheers i prosume the tagan will suffice though all those bits are in my current nforce 2 system so its really only a mobo and cpu and soundcard upgrade

any ideas where ou can get a dx9 from to put on(will prob come with cd and would i need to install the realtek drivers if i am using the top one(nforce)

also i prosume this is right in order

dx9
chipset
gfx card

also i ordered a dual ps2>usb converter just incase of any probs with keyboard

i see these a64 chips dont have a little core like the bartons so i prosume you have to cover the whole area

i am really worried about doing this lol although i have built a couple of low end systems and rebuilt mine countless times lol

(Assuming "dx9"=DirectX9)

The order they go in is the same as the order you put the hardware in...Chipset, Graphics, DirectX. Anytime you change any of the drivers (technically DirectX isn't a driver), run DirectX's setup again. May not be necessary, but it may cure a problem you might run across.

DirectX will be on most magazine coverdiscs, and bundled with any game. Obviously, the more recent the game, the more recent the version of DX. Finally if you can't find the latest version the (9.0c) its on MS's site.

Yes, cover the whole of the heatspreader with thermal goop, but make it a film of the stuff rather than a blob (use a credit card to smear it around, and rotate the heatsink a degree or two (as much as the clip allows) once it's set in place).

Yep the Tagan will be fine if you already have it, I thought you had yet to buy a PSU.
DX9 as ColinR mentioned is with recent games .. if you have HL2, ithe latest official DX version (9.0c) is on the dvd .. just explore it and browse to the directx folder and double click setup.

If you have a retail cpu/HSF package, you wont need thermal gloop, as it has a pad already applied.

If you only intent to use one lan socket, then disable the other one in bios and you wont need to worry about it.

Well the supplied "pad" is pretty decent, it works well, its actually a thin layer of compound which is presumably set with the cpu heat, not any noticable temp differences between that and AS tbh ... but you can scrape it of if needs be.

The paste on my heatsink was silver/grey so I assume it was probably a silver based compound and left it. The machine finish on the mating surface of the heatsink is rather crude and would be interesting if anyone has got better results from Lapping a standard heatsink.

ok guys expecting my board next week and then i will be shutting down my faithful baby im on now and taking apart so trying to gather as much info as possible as i wont have net access and no one else to help so it may be the last you hear of bigjonnyauk lol

i have printed off the 113 page manuel and did that take an age lol thought i would have a read to try and get a bit of a jist before it comes

have downloaded the nforce 5.10 drivers(will notinstall sound and ide driver though) and the 67.03 gfx drivers for my 6600gt also got the creative drivers for my s/card

can you think of anything else

a few things that have been concerning me

this keyboard thing i read the link to veiw good compatible keyboards on there and luckily the logitech ultra x is one of them so hoping im ok there but have just got a 2ps2>usb converter just incase

i see the mobo has a 4 pin power socket aswell for cpu aswell as the 20 pin one i am sure my tagn has a few of these how do i know which to use

if all goes well and i can get into bios what settings should i change

i dont understand this htt stuff much am used to fsb but am i rigfht in thinking the processer runs at 200 and you have to get as close to 1000 as poss so multiplier has to be at 5 hence if you ran at 250 multiplier would have to be at 4

i have dual channel geil 3200 1 gig ram 2x512 sticks

am i right in thinking this is set to 200 and what about this 1t and 2 t settings i have read it needs to be changed to 2

i also need to disable cool and quiet ?

set agp frequency to 67

disable onboard sound as using creative card (been told to put this in middle slot )

i am going to use the nvidea lan for my net which i have been told is the top one so do i still need to use the realtek drivers
and what is this gigabyte lan i am prosuming this is for connecting to other comps in hose or gaming with other comps something i wont be doing so can this be disabled

hope you guys can be helpful i am not a total newbie and have a limited idea my main thing is i worry to much lol

i am gonna print of the replys the day my board comes to use as notes and stuff

thanks and if you see anything i have missed please dont be shy put in here
