The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

ok guys expecting my board next week and then i will be shutting down my faithful baby im on now and taking apart so trying to gather as much info as possible as i wont have net access and no one else to help so it may be the last you hear of bigjonnyauk lol

i have printed off the 113 page manuel and did that take an age lol thought i would have a read to try and get a bit of a jist before it comes

have downloaded the nforce 5.10 drivers(wont install sound and ide though) and the 67.03 gfx drivers for my 6600gt also got the creative drivers for my s/card

can you think of anything else

a few things that have been concerning me

this keyboard thing i read the link to veiw good compatible keyboards on there and luckily the logitech ultra x is one of them so hoping im ok there but have just got a 2ps2>usb converter just incase

i see the mobo has a 4 pin power socket aswell for cpu aswell as the 20 pin one i am sure my tagn has a few of these how do i know which to use

if all goes well and i can get into bios what settings should i change

i dont understand this htt stuff much am used to fsb but am i rigfht in thinking the processer runs at 200 and you have to get as close to 1000 as poss so multiplier has to be at 5 hence if you ran at 250 multiplier would have to be at 4

i have dual channel geil 3200 1 gig ram 2x512 sticks

am i right in thinking this is set to 200 and what about this 1t and 2 t settings i have read it needs to be changed to 1t

i also need to disable cool and quiet ?

set agp frequency to 67

disable onboard sound as using creative card (been told to put this in middle slot )

i am going to use the nvidea lan for my net which i have been told is the top one so do i still need to use the realtek drivers
and what is this gigabyte lan i am prosuming this is for connecting to other comps in hose or gaming with other comps something i wont be doing so can this be disabled

hope you guys can be helpful i am not a total newbie and have a limited idea my main thing is i worry to much lol

i am gonna print of the replys the day my board comes to use as notes and stuff

thanks and if you see anything i have missed please dont be shy put in here

Tagan should only have one aux 12volt connector which will fit, I think!

Over 200 set HT multiplier to x4 over 250 to x3

Set to 1T unless your FSB >280!!

Diable cool n'quiet

Use MAC (NV) LAN and disable GB LAN. MAC LAN works on TOP RJ45 port

Under Hidden Options in BIOS CoreCell menu (shift+F2 the alt+F3) disable NV speedup

Check out this thread;)

Good luck:)

Got my kit in on Friday and been playing about with it today.

MSI Neo2 Platinum (latest BIOS)
AMD64 S939 3000+
2x512Mb Crucial Ballistx PC4000 DDr
Crucial ATI 9800 Pro 128Mb
Arctic Freezer 64

So far stable at 240MHzx9, HT Multi 4 (2160MHz) @ 1.55v, 2.5-4-4-8 (2.8v). Idle CPU temp at 41°C, load at 48°C. My target is to get to 250x9.

To test stability I'm running through SuperPi 8Mb challenge, AquaMark3 and CS:Source Stress Test.

:)

Sounds good, keep us posted with what you're testing and how it's going. I'm expecting almost the same kit through the post in a day or two. Not setup a pc from scratch for years so should be fun!

The significance of the first two sata ports being unlocked is presumably only an issue if you intend to overclock? I'm looking at buying a s939/agp board but i have a 2 Raid-1 arrays and am looking to add another raid-1 array in the future, so I'd be using all 4 onboard ports as well as my addition 2 port controller card.

got one from the MM last week,
errm, how do you adjust the HT, when i enter that option, the box is clear and only ctr.alt.del will do owt?
i read about sh+f2 then alt+f3 in bios to unlock 'hidden' features, i've done this but no joy???, have i not done it right or is the board stuffed, i'm using neo2 setup now so it all 'seems' to work fine
Ta!!

just to let you know i've sorted it, use - + (or pg up, dn)to adjust, and not hiting enter to....well enter the box:D

Well the WoW beta crashed at the above settings so I'm running on default just now to "burn in" the systems components to see if it makes a difference.

Edit:

Done a few more tests and the system is stable at 250x9 (2250MHz) so I'm happy. :)

I've used 2.7v for RAM voltage and the other settings are the same as the previous post.

Aquamark3: 48,108
Source Test: 157.96fps

Also, just had a play of World of Warcraft Beta and it didn't crash on me like when I had memory at 2.8v, so looking good. :D

Just a heads up ... I have been having a rare crash with squeaky electronic noise coming from speakers along with hard lock (either plain blue screen or frozen last image) which was rare when I was playing mainly one game, however I loaded up thief 3 to play and it was happening very frequently ... after a lot of swearing, It looks like my audigy2 card is not happy in the MSI board.
I have seen reports of some people being fine, other having issues with this set-up .. now I can say I am one of the later :(
I unistalled audigy2 and drivers and used on board sound, and all seems well .. over two and a half hours solid gameplay no problems.
Stuck the audigy back in (tried a couple of different pci slots) and had the problem within 10 mins again.

Now, I dont know if its certain audigy 2 cards, or what, for the record mine is an OEM bought around nov last year.

I have recently handed over a friends build, very similar to mine, using an audigy 2 value, so I will contact them to see if all is well.

So if you are having similar issues , and have an audigy, thats something to look into :)

Someone had a similar experience to you I think further up the thread, it seems they prefer to be in the second slot from bottom.

Certainly that's where mine is without problems.

Jokester

Aye, Like I mentiioned some have issues, some don't .. might be something to do with firmware/bios on the card ? who knows .. but certainly second up from bottom (directly above the orange one) didnt work for me, nor the middle one.
Just one of those things I guess, at least my audigy2 was bought a while back (just found receipt actually bought it aug 04 for £19 new) and its been in 3 buiilds so far, so I had my money's worth :)
If I had paid £40 plus and got it for this set-up I might have felt differently ;)

mine is coming in the week i read the onboard sound was not good and probs with certain audigy2 cards i only have a 2.1 i trigues so have picked up a cheap 5.1 digital to try from creative only cost 8 quid

Well the OB isnt too bad, its a pity they didn't use soundstorm in nf3 chipsets ... but I have a 5.1 speaker setup and its pretty decent for gaming, obviously it isnt going to match the audigy 2 for music/films etc, but then I have a home theatre setup for that ;)
I was dubious, as being software based, the OB might eat a few cpu resources and slow the pc a bit, but I have just run a track from one of my games, which is very system demanding, with surround audio, and it had absolutly no hit on fps :)
I now can't get the extended eax effects (I think ob does basic eax) but its better than I thought it would be.

My onboard sound makes a nasty crackling sound when I click on things with the mouse. I'm not over impressed with it so I normally keep it off and use My headphones which have there own USB soundcard built in.
The sound on my old Abit AT7 was great in comparison to this.

My OB hums a little after power-on but before Windows actually starts, but it's only noticeable when the volume's up quite high on the speakers. All in all I don't think I'll be going back to my Santa Cruz, as with the OB I have front head/mic ports which I didn't have with the SC.

Ok another update ... my friends audigy 2 value is working fine (in pci slot 3) so either it's the different firmware/bios to mine which works fine, or my audigy 2 oem is borked.

something that has not been mebtioned yet and i have been wondering about my curremt mobo an8x e deluxe had isssues when enabling the onboard firewire and using soundstorm so i had to buy a firewire card so i could tranfser stuff from my digital camcorder

does the onboard firewire ports work ok on this one with no compatibility issues anywhere as this will save me a pci slot

My on board Firewire works very well. hopefully be the same for everyone with a Neo2.

Tbh its only the poor sound and the maxtor/nvidia combi. problems that I dont like. well, ok the northbridge air raid siren ain't too good either. So If anyone knows of a nice Chipset cooler without a fan I'd like to know.:D

what you mean maxtor/nvidea combi ?

i have ordered 2 new hard drives aswell one for me and one for my sisters machine

a 120 gig maxtor oh oh and a 120 gig seagate barracuda maybe i ought to keep the seagate then and tell my sister they had sold out ;)
