The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

hi guys am going to be changing my hard drive over from a normal ide to a sata one very soon

am i right in thinking you use number 3 as 1 and 2 are dodgey system is running at stock and has bios 1.4

also i lost the floppy with the sata drivers on and also i dont have a floppy drive

how am i supposed to put them on now lol

If your going to install a single sata drive as your boot drive (C:/Windows) you won't need any drivers.
Works with what comes on the XP CD.

Use the top sata ports by the AGP slot / CPU, as those are locked (port 3 or 4)

In the Cell Menu:
Shift+F2 <release>

It does work.

many thanks in the cell menu mmm i was doing it in the first page....anyhow i have turned off the nv/ati overclock which was hidden in my bios and finally i can play battlefield2 with no problems i wonder how many guys out there have the same problem but dont know it. i was on the verge of buying a new card for a few hundred....

This is not quite true of all copies of XP. If you have an original, non-service pack copy of XP then it won't work. Needs to be SP1 or SP2 I believe.

Or, put it another way, it didn't work for me when I tried it. I needed to use a floppy with the drivers on.

To bigjonnyauk: Do you not have a spare old floppy drive you can plug in purely during the install phase?

As to "Which SATA ports to use?" Split has answered this for you - 3 and 4. But it should be made clear that there is nothing "dodgy" about ports 1 and 2 when you are running at stock speeds. The only problem with these ports is when you start overclocking the system, these ports are also overclocked. Whereas ports 3 and 4 are kept at the same speed. ;)

Just thought I would add something that you may want to know...

Wit hregardign certain hardware that may have issues.

The Radeon 9800Pro ( The IceQ version I am referring to, but may have others similar )

The card will not go in.

There is a small switch on the back of the card, and this needs to be removed because it presses down on a Capacitor on the Motherboard.

I was lucky in a way, because when I first tried it, the AGP clip on the Mobo had gone over, and I could not get to it.

I didnt pull hard "Just in case" and it did look like I was going to have to remove the Mobo, but thankfully a knitting needle was at hand, which allowed me to release the clip.

Anyway, just thought I would let you know.

I am off to have a play with my BIOS again now...

SHIFT+F2
ALT+F3

Or whatever it is?

ok split i did that slipstream with sp2 last night was a bit hard for a newbie like me but i think i have done it ok it said file intergration complete and it burnt ok

now never having used sata drives before

is there anything in the bios i need to change

still cant find my sata disk and i dont have a floppy drive anywhere but now it should work with my xp disk

The SATA BIOS at startup should spot the drive. i.e. it will be listed on the screen amoung the black and white text at start up.

Then hit f11 during startup, and select the CD-ROM to boot from. The rest should be fairly automatic. :)

Right, my new Corsair XMS4400 RAM is fowl in this board so far...

Best I have had, is 230FSB.

Anyone wish to give me a few BIOS settings to get this RAM workign well in my Neo2 Platinum?

How exactly does that HT thingy work?
I have set it to 1x and up to 5x and there is absolutely no difference in anything no matter where that is?

The RAM FSB sets to 100, 133, 166, 200 and of course I have it on AUTO... I have everythign on auto actually, except CPU and anything over 230FSB on the CPU and it goes to SAFEMODE and restarts at 200. The Mobo and CPU have done 2.6Ghz for the last 6 months on lesser RAM, sowhat do I need to do to make it work nice for me? Its my first ( And last ) 64 Bit Machine.

I have finally got it faster than my bartons however, although its got a long way to go to beat the Mobile barton... I have got SuperPI down to 37 ( The Barton is at 34 ) so thats good, but again, thats only with putting the CPU FSB to 230.

Anyway, can anyone give me some info then please, cos tight now, I am a little scared.

Best overclocking guide for this board is here though it may be a little extreme for some.

bigjonnyauk: If you are gonna install windows on a new sata drive, disconnect your IDE.
Make sure that sata is turned on in the BIOS, and then make sure in the boot order that that sata is first using PG UP and PG DN.
Making an SP2 disc is not hard, but you must get this right when you burn it.

I have tried a few guides, but the annoying thing is that I just cannot do it?

I mean, the CPU does 2.6 stable
The RAM is XMS4400 and has been to 285 for gods sake, its also Samsung TCCD, so thats abotu the best RAM I can get for this board.

I have tried the most poncy settings, and the best I have managed is 234 FSB and currently at 230 and its Rock solid here, have just run 3DMark05 at the same time as cnverting an AVI to DVD ( yeah I know, but we all have our own little silly things to stress their PC ) and its done that perfectly fine, while at 231 it failed to run 3DMark benchmark completely??

Now, if it did it for a bit then crashed, thats somehting, but this started it and then quit, but with only 1FSB more?

BIOS is v1.8

I have printed off about 40 pages of guides so far, and I think what I will have to do, is concentrate on one guide only and start froim a fresh BIOS Setting... Taking days on end I suppose.

I ran this RAM upstairs to my XP17 ( Which seems to take any setting I throw at it, and even in a Socket 7 board, I took it straight to 240 to try and it was fine. It onl;y started to give me hassles when I threw it at 250 but then, I have never hit 250 in a Socket 7 anyway, but it showed me the RAM was ok to that much.

Anyway, I suppose I am being just a little impatient.

Oh, and my CPU will not go at 9 or 9.5?? - It must be 10? - Why is that?

came into a little bit of money and have been able to afford the xfx 6800gt aswell wooohoooo

but im a bit concerned i hear about freeze ups on the neo 2 with this card can anyone shed some light on this for me please

also is setting up sata hard drive same way as ide one to put xp on

disable the h/d ide enable sata ports in bios connect up turn on

press button to enter bios then change to boot from cd format install windows change back to boot from h/d job done

or is there something different to do

bigjonnyauk: Reading the thread will help. SATA on ports 3 or 4 as they are locked while overclocking. Otherwise, yes to your descriptions.

If you are having lockups with your 6800GT, try the hidden BIOS stuff mentioned above. From the Cell Menu, Shift-f2, Alt-f3, then turn off the NV/Ati Overclock Thingy.

mallen yes i read thread many moons ago and pop in for a update was just checking 6800gt hasnt come yet but was just seeing if anyone else had probs if i am using sata port 3 can i still leave 1/2 disabled in bios and just enable 3/4

AFAIK, I have not seen anyone post problems with any nvidia cards. But Scroll back to post 1164 and you'll see someone who made his Ati card more stable by hitting that hidden setting. Something about automatically overclocking the video. So if you get problems, try that switch

SATA - can't remeber if you can turn off just one unused pair. I think you can. Personally I have all SATA and IDE off 'cos I am using SCSI in here. ;)

Edit: Just been in the BIOS. Yes you can disable SATA ports 1/2 amd 3/4 in pairs.

ok i tried to OC my winnie yesterday and managed to get:

232 FSB
standard volts
4X HT

but i want more, the temps are fine... what should i do? should i increase volts? if so to what i find the volts options confusing...

any ideas appretiated....

I have been sitting at mine all morning...

Its currently running 250x9.5 ( Stock volts on CPU & RAM, RAM @ 2.5-4-8-4 )

However, there is somethign thats bugging the nipples off me...

Ok, I have run a quick run through 3DMark 2001 while doing this:-

Firstly at 230x10, at the point where the jeep slides, I was getting 287FPS, the Dragon scene I was getting 380FPS... OK, not the end result was 19980. Not good.

Now, at 250x9.5 I run it again, and at the same points, I had 430 and 520, yet my 3DMark was 19778?

Showing me yet more proof that 3DMark is a pile of cack.

Now, dont get me wrong, I know that 3DM is a GFX bench,. btu the fact is that if it does "X" FPS and the result is "XX", then if it gets "Y"FPS next time round, I expect the result to be proportionate to that and I expected "YY" not "XX" again!

Weird.

Also been running Performance Test 4, and comparing the retults with my XP17 at 2.4. And I am no better off with the PT4 scores either. Not really.

The Disk mark has shot down since going to 9.5 Multi from 10... Almost to half actually ,which is a shock, but it does not seem to be slower as such with general use, but the DiskMark was definitely a hell of a lot slower.

Also SuperPI was another annoyance...

the winchester gives me these scores on the Winchester 3200 :-

200x10 = 46s
230x10 = 39s
250x9.5 = 36s

Now, the XP17 at 200x10 gave me a SuperPI of 41s

So, how come the Winnie was 46s then?

Bloody hell.

At least I am getting the speed I am aiming for now though!

See how far it will push, I just threw it in at 240 it went just fine, so I threw it at 250 and that too went fine, not bothjered tweaking yet, and tobe fair, on the SocketA Boards, I did do a lot of tweaking, so there is still plenty of room for improvements in this system, so I wont keep judging it too much... Not yet.

One Question...

Why can I take it all the way to 250x9.5 and have no problems, yet with a 10x Multi, I cannot go higher than 230FSB?

The CPU Volts are on AUTO which is what? supposed to be 1.5? - According to CPUz its at 1.34? - I tried to knock it to 1.4 but according to CPUz it was still at 1.3, so WTF? It make no difference to stability either?

I am just bloody confused with all this A64 polava!

Especially when its not really any faster than a good Socket A setup, I am more than a bit miffed both with myself, and the PC too!
