The MSI Neo2 Platinum Owners Help Thread

I've just bought a K8N Neo2 and finding it a little bit noisey. I'm using it with a 9800 Pro with arctic cooler (the original design) and I'm wondering what kind of quieter cooling could be used on the northbridge as there doesn't seem to be much room. It certainly doesn't look like a zalman northbridge cooler will fit.

Also would a Zalman CNPS7000B fit on the CPU with the blue plastic bracket on the back of the 9800 pro holding the arctic cooler on, or would it get in the way?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

From what I can work out slowing down the northbridge fan has been giving me blue screens. Not had one since I let the fan run at full RPM.

It seems a very odd design for a motherboard, I think most CPU heatsinks are going to struggle to fit in if you have anything other than stock cooling on your GPU. Obviously once you've bought a heatsink and discovered it won't fit nobody is going to take it back for a refund :(

Right bit of a long shot here. But worth a try. I've got a Neo2. On the two sata ports nearest the socket I have a 300gb sata and 200gb sata.

The 300 is split into 2 and has win xp pro on one and win xp 64 on the other. Obviously it asks me on boot which one I want to start with.

I've now added a 160gb pata onto the secondary slave with my dvdrw on the secondary master. But when I boot it just asks to boot from cd and then shows some nvidia info and stops.

I'm gonna assume its a problem with the boot.ini? It currently looks like:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

And is located on the 64bit partition. Anyone got any idea what i can change it to to carry on dual booting and to be able to use the 160ghb pata? Or can i do something in the recovery console to repair the boot.ini?

I think that whats more likely to be the problem here, is tha **** tryign to boot from the PATA HD instead of the SATA as normal.

In the BIOS, you can choose the order it will try to boot the devices, so put the SATA HDs before the PATA ones!

There are 2 entries in the BIOS... One is the normal way of selecting HD0, CDROM, and so on, but there is also the one to select HARD DISK BOOT PRIORITY... I think its the 3rd from the top in the main BIOS screen actually...

Select that, and then use the +/- keys on the number pad to move the SATA0 HD to the top, and the SATA1 HD to the second one... I think its putting the PATA HD first for you, you see...

They go by the actual names though, so you need to check which is which if need be... Either way, whatever is at the top right now... Move it down so somethign else is at the top.... If it still doesnt work, you have selected the wrong HD, and do it again until you get the right one!

I doubt that its your BOOT.INI file, that looks fine, although myself, I would have put XP32 before XP64 cos if you need to wipe off XP64 its going to be more hassle now, but thats me.

i have just bought an icy box ib-350us external caddy here and put in a seagate 300gb (ide not sata) and all is well when i use the usb cable but when i try to use the sata cable xp pro slows down to a crawl and the drive is not detected.if i try to boot up when the icy box is switched on and connected with the sata cable i think my bios gets confused because sometimes it will detect my raid 0 raptors but then it will not xp shows faint in the background ideas anyone? i have posted this in the hard drive section but there were no takers i think its this board maybe...

Come on in... It seems we are on a roll... LOL

Ok, With SATA, the HD MUST be on MASTER... Have you made sure of this?

Some IDE HDs actually have 2 Master settings too!

1 - Master
2 - Master with Slave Present

As well as Slave & CS settings, so make sure its on Master, and if it is, then if it has both settings, change it to the other, and try that!

I know I have a couple of Drives that when used with the Serillel adapter to run them on the SATA, I have to change the setting round for SATA from what I need it to be on PATA, so I guess thats the most obvious one for me that I can think of...

So, just try all the combinations of Jumper settings you can think of, and then try some more???

Good luck.

Is this MEnu the PCs Menu, or Windows' Menu?

If its the PRE-BOOT Motherboard Menu, then editting the BIOS.INI file is very unlikely to make any difference.

As you say, it offers what HD to start up with, and now its only offering the CD, this means that its the BootMenu of the Mobo rather than the Windows Menu.

If thats the case, then I would think that maybe the HD & CD are both set as Master or Slave, and the C Dis taking the priority over the HD, but as to why that would cause the SATA to vanish I dont know?

Have you tried taking the PATA back off?

What happens then?

My PATA drives (Maxtors) wouldn't run on anything other than Cable Select. Try that. I don't like doing it as when the drives are outside the machine, which one is which? :)

Have just installed the lastest MSI BIOS release version 1.9 after struggling to get it to detect the sata drives again. This new bios reports "have option ROM cannot invoke ........" just before it goes to the raid detection. Anyone know what this means and why it does it ?

Why is this board so temperamental when detecting the sata drives?

At this moment, I am running :-

C: = SATA0 - Raptor
D: = SATA1 - Seagate 80GB

E: = IDE0 - Maxtor 160GB
F: = IDE2 - Maxtor 40GB
T: = IDE3 - Maxtor 120GB

R: = PATA0 - Pioneer 107 DVDRW
V: = PATA1 - Pioneer 109 DVDRW
W: = PATA2 - BTC DVDRW
Z: = PATA3 - MSI CDRW

IDEx being an ITE8212 IDE Card, and PATA being the on-board IDE.
IDE1 is not connected to anything, and as I am overclocking, neither are SATA 3 & 4

I have had no problems with Maxtor HDs in this board, and admittedly, they are on a seperate IDE card, I have run them on the motherboard, and I have NEVER had to use Cable Select... Come to think of it, none of my other PCs that have Maxtor HDs use Cable select either?

As for the SATA, I have tried all the above HDs and a number of others too, using both REAL SATA and my Abit Serillel adapters, and have had no problems.

The only time I have had an issue, is when I have not jumpered the drivers properly.

If its jumpered correctly and you are still having trouble, then I dont know what the cause can be.

If I take the pata out it boots fine again. I'll have anotehr fiddle with that bios menu and try changing the jumpers round to see if it makes a difference.

Shere its stopping is just after it says 'press any key to boot from cd' even though boot from cd isn't selected in the bios.

Then oyu have the BOOT Sprite thingy in it switched on then... Switch it off!

Its not called Sprite on this Board.

Are you definitely sure that you have set the HD order to select the SATA first?

Can you tell us the settings in your BIOS and what they are currently set to?

There is 2 pages on booting devices...

1 - To select HD / CD / USB and so on
2 - To select which HD is first, which is second and so on...

You do have both of these setup right dont you?

Also tell us what your jumper settings are currently on, and what IDE lines the drives are on.

I know you said that you have done this and that, but I think you are missing somethign.

hey guys just a quick one, can you overclock with 2Gb ram, same on the 166 divider put the fsb to 240 that make the ram @ 200 and the CPU at 2.4.

Just i know the chip can go to 2.8 byt its crashing at the raid array part.

nice1

If its crashing at the RAID, are you using SATA RAID?

If you are, then what SATA Ports are you using?

Ports 1 & 2 are unlocked, and Ports 3 & 4 are locked.

Or, in other words, if you are overclocking, then you cannot use SATA Ports 1 & 2

Im having problems with the sata drives at the moment. The machine was running perfectly until I managed to buy an antivirus solution on a corrupt CD which killed my windows installation.

I have 2 74gb raptors on ports 3&4 set up as a single striped array but, windows cannot find them even tho I have installed the drivers for them

Why is it so hard to get these damn sata raid systems to work on this board?

any advice would be helpful and before anyone says F6 & install drivers ....I've already done that a hundred times

You say WINDOW cannot find them, and by that I assume that you already have Windows installed? Do you already have Windows installed or are you meaning that you are at the Windows installer stage, and cannot put the drivers on?

SP1 or SP2 makes no difference for me... I doubt it would make any difference for you either.

The Drivers for this F6 business...

Firstly, have you tried NOT bothering to install any? - I have installed XP with SP1 and SP2 and both of them found my drives just fine, although they are NOT as RAID.

Does windows find the drives seperately, just not as RAID?

Secondly, as I said, I have NOT got RAID on this Board, however, on a couple of my other Boards that have SATA/RAID, I have had a lot of trouble installing Windows onto their drives, even though I know I had good drivers, the problem was, that the drivers needed to install to the Drives, were different to the ones for wyhen I was adding the drives to an already running setup.... I thought of that and went to search for installation drivers, and then after that, it went on just fine?

Maybe this board is the same? I have not seen anythign obvious in the WebSite, but still... Always worth getting the drivers and making sure?
