The New European Super (borefest) League

I watch games when there is something to play for.

I would rather watch South Korea play USA in the World Cup Final than Brazil vs England for 3rd place.

I would rather watch Fulham's last game in the season to see whether they stay in the PL than Arsenal vs Wolves in mid-table.

A game with nothing to play for is like Man U vs Real M in a pre-season friendly, I NEVER watch friendlies.
Well these wouldn't be friendly matches, it starts off in league format so no different to the CL group phase or your usual domestic leagues - are we saying those games don't mean anything? May as well not watch anything other than finals of cup competitions using that logic.

This definitely makes more sense why they blocked Newcastle being bought out by the Saudi's. It was all about them not wanting a new big dog tipping up at the filthy table.

Either way, I am not watching any of whatever they are planning. 5 a side and local town football for me.

Mark Goldbridge recent Thats Football clip is the one for me, spot on.

Lets hope these clubs get charged with being illegal cartels and the owners get locked up.

Cartels are distinguished from other forms of collusion or anti-competitive organization.

They are run as businesses and given their dominant position it's possible they have done something that can be prosecuted. :D

Yup, me too. I'll keep watching the PL from time to time, but otherwise I'm done. I play and watch enough other sport to need to waste time on football

One thing these plans have done is make the reformatted CL, which until yesterday so many disliked, now seem like a great idea for the rest of Europe.
Have been waiting to see more concrete ideas before posting on this. Some things I like about the proposal but the guaranteed 'founders' part is a real sticking point. If it was started with these x teams and then promotion/relegation happened as normal with no guarantees then I'd be all for it.
I said the same earlier in the thread. A League format replacing the CL isn't a terrible idea, it's just who plays in it and how they qualify.

I'm just hoping the current players & managers don't actually support the plans, it's disgusting.

They will be friendly matches to me, if there is no risk, there is no reward.

There is no risk of them not ever be in that competition, any reward that comes with it is empty and pointless. CL groups phases you get there by merit, the merit of finishing top 4 or top 2 in your own domestic league.

So, yes, if they are there not by merit, then it's basically a pre-arranged friendly. Which it is, they are pre-arranging it now.

Yeah agreed, I have nothing in principle against changing how the CL is structured (although I really like its present structure), but the only justification for these 12 clubs breaking away is to guarantee themselves money and qualification, which is bang out of order

Not really. Fulham's matches are currently interesting as they're playing to survive. Liverpool's are currently interesting as they're scrapping for top 4
Even though City have more or less won the league, there are still 5 teams or so with a lot to play for, meaning that a significant number of matches still have interest. In the new format once a team has won the league the rest of it is dead.

If you are "champion" of this new Super League, it's as empty as winning a pre-season mini-league with your pre-arranged friends around the globe.

Who counts those trophies?

They are keeping quiet because 300k a week isn't enough at the minute with a some big fat pay rises in the pipeline if they go along with it.

Part of me doesn't blame them individually, however sometimes having a bit of backbone and integrity wouldn't go a miss. What do I know I am just normal person.

It's not a league that can be won like that.

It's not a league in the same way the 'Champions League' and 'Europa League' are not actually league formats.

It's a cut down qualifying format with 2 big qualifying group 'leagues' and then a knockout.

Nobody has won until the last game.

No fair point. But once a team in the group stage can't qualify, that's that. They aren't playing to avoid relegation or anything. And with massive groups it'll be a long stretch of games - it's not like the current format where the only dead rubbers occur in the last round or two at worst.

With all the political and footballing will against this whether UEFA will take the short term financial hit and kick the teams out of champions League unless they back track.

If you honestly think that's why they didn't allow that deal to go through then wow.

Increasingly yes they are; there's always a lot of media and TV hype but they aren't always the most riveting of football spectacles

Premier League TV revenue is through the roof though as long as people still pay to watch it doesn't matter if the matches are a bit been there done that got the t-shirt.
