The New European Super (borefest) League

It's more based on wealth, the teams forming the super league are so wealthy it's difficult for them to be supplanted by lesser teams anyway. It's like ollies said about Bayern as soon as any of their competitors start to pose any kind of a threat they just swoop in and take their best players to keep them down.

This is another example of why its hard to be anything but cynical in this day and age. Bayern may be abstaining from the SL but is it because they believe in fair competition and how things run at the moment or is it because they don't like competition outside of the CL and they have a sweet thing going in the Bundasliga at the moment. They pluck players from their direct rivals all the time and have done for as long as I can remember so they don't care about fair competition. Like all clubs they are entirely in it for themselves.

The Premier League and even Champions League are massively less desirable without the engagement and involvement of the top clubs. They do have incredible power so it's not as easy as banning them, it would torpedo the financial structure of the game.

But spurs, city and Chelsea weren't top clubs until recently, they will be replaced

I grew up watching a 5 hour build up to the FA Cup final and desperately wanting to watch International friendlies to the point that as a kid I quit my swimming lessons on Wednesday nights because they clashed with International fixtures. I now have no excitement around the FA Cup and haven't watched a single second of International football this season. Football changes and what we value does too.
+1 to this. Used to sit in the pub from 12pm on FA Cup final days, even when my team wasn't involved. It was a big occassion, which over time and football evolving has lost that feeling.

The entire point of this league are teams being there not by merit.

That is the crux of the problem, that is the POINT of sport. This CL was meant to be for champions (I already have a problem of 2nd to 4th place teams being in it), and now if they are there no matter what, it totally removes the spirit of sport.

What's next? buy your way into the final? the other place can be play for?
And the point I was making is this has changed over time. 60 years ago nobody cared about the European Cup at all, now they do, despite it changing from just League winners to the top 2, top 3, top 4 and would still care about it with the planned UEFA changes which achieve much of what this European League aims to achieve.

Every time a competition format changes or as supporters we're asked to pay even more money to watch football you get thousands of "I'm done with football" comments and yet we keep coming back and embracing the changes. This new competition is argued against by so many supporters but, unfortunately, if it did happen in 10 years time nobody would care anymore. It would just be what the CL is to us today.

I watch games when there is something to play for.

I would rather watch South Korea play USA in the World Cup Final than Brazil vs England for 3rd place.

I would rather watch Fulham's last game in the season to see whether they stay in the PL than Arsenal vs Wolves in mid-table.

A game with nothing to play for is like Man U vs Real M in a pre-season friendly, I NEVER watch friendlies.
Well said, this ESL will just feel like friendlies, hyped to hell in some overblown USA style. No danger if your already guaranteed to be in it next year, could finish bottom in esl, get religated domestically and still be in it next year, yawn

The lack of merit of it still holds true today or tomorrow or in 10 years and why the FA Cup has more romance to it than the League Cup.

Time doesn't change of lack of merit.

You could have said the same about the CL when they stopped giving automatic places to the winners of the Romanian League and instead gave places to the runners-up or 3rd place sides in the PL. This has been a gradual progression and we know the planned upcoming changes to the CL were another step in the direction of this new Super League - the CL would have still been the CL though and considered the biggest competition in football. This League just skips a couple of steps out.

I applied for a job at Uefa last year. Wish I'd got it now, would be a fascinating place to be today

Edit: to be clear, I also wish I'd got it more generally - working on Lake Geneva wouldn't be bad!

I wonder if these games will become like a American MLB game where the fans spend half the time shopping and eating rather than watching the game. This was Yankees Vs redsox btw.

By who? Who would want to invest heavily in another club that won't be in the SL and will just be a big fish in a small pond competing for the scraps of the big boys. The reason Chelsea, City and PSG all grew from oil money was because you could inject cash and get a seat at the top table within a few years and potentially start seeing some sort of return on your investment. Transfer fees won't go down with the SL and you will just have an even bigger gulf between the haves and the have nots.

This is just human nature unfortunately. Games developers put out lazy games year after year and people say "X is dead" and thousands say they won't buy it. Most of them still do. Something is better than nothing and we will all watch the SL if it goes ahead.
