The New European Super (borefest) League

The problem with kicking these teams out of the league is that it would be detrimental to the other teams too, that's why I think giving them a massive points deduction instead would be best. The other teams will still play with them and reap the benefits, but the big 6 won't have a chance of winning anymore.

Ahh yes that sporting integrity everyone is looking for.

If you do something that extreme then the chances of coming back from all this is slim to none. The only clubs that will suffer are the 14 clubs who vote for it absolutely killing their finances.

or another English one with a more savvy board playing a wait-and-see strategy of "needing key shareholder confirmation so can't confirm at this stage" BS

It'll be West Ham, take it to the bank. They won't announce it yet because of the obvious cronyism.

Wonder who the other 3 founding teams will be, apparently Bayern and Dortmund turned it down, and you'd expect if it was another Spanish or Italian club (Sevilla / Roma) it would've been announced alongside their countrymen, so I guess you're looking at:

PSG
Ajax?
Porto??

Bayern and Dortmund have "turned it down" because they couldn't have agreed before it was announced. Their fan ownership means this would have be put to a motion and voted upon at an EGM.

I'd be shocked if they don't join if it goes ahead. Same for PSG. They've got no need to get involved... yet. And I'd expect Ajax to be one of the first teams to be on the invite list.

Gonna be interesting how they spin the 5 teams getting 'promoted' into the ESL, given the statements about how teams will get banned by their federations for participating. I mean imagine the scenario:

-You are a team not one of the 15 founders.
-You win your domestic league and qualify for the UEFA Champions League
-The ESL invite you to join next season
-If you join, you get banned by the domestic association and UEFA from their competitions. Your players get banned from representing their countries.
-You might get kicked out of the ESL next season. Where you do go from there? You'd almost need a 'parachute competition' for all the clubs that have been kicked out of the ESL with no other tournaments to go back to as they are banned.

If this goes through, UEFA will be pretty finished.

they would have to come back as non league teams and work their way back up the pyramid I guess ?

No it wouldnt. As i have already said 60% of revenue goes to these 6 clubs. The TV deal would literally flatline. Clubs like Norwich are already in trouble without this happening. Delia can only sell so many books.

If this goes ahead it'll be RIP in a few years when fans get bored of watching their teams not bother competing because they've got nothing to lose

Depends on timing I think. UEFA will have long-term deals in place for certain things, in particular international competitions, I think there's a chance they would still be around until those things expire. They won't fold overnight, but clearly they'll have a lot of problems attracting sponsors in future.

You've got to imagine some sort of compromise agreement will be be pursued, which is why I'm a big surprised it's all gone public at this time. Maybe a bargaining tactic ahead of CL reforms, but it's pretty extreme brinkmanship.

LOL RIP the premier league if that happens.

you keep syaing that, the prmier league is RIP when the ESL starts up anyway. Those 6 EPL teams will just field crap reserves and youth teams in the EPL because there is simply nothing to play for as they have already got their never ending feathered nest in the ESL. The premier league need to grow some big hairy balls and just sling them out.

I'd have done it already. First thing this morning. No discussions, no warning, no "please rethink" just you're gone. you've made your bed no go lie in it.

Those 6 clubs would still be in the premier league it would just be a mess. The broadcasting rights wouldnt fall off a cliff. I havent got time to go into the financials of all this but I can see some clubs be close to folding if this happened. It would be championship levels of money (595 mil for the whole of the football league over 5 years) and if i remember the prems was worth 7 bil for 3 seasons?

If they "grow big hairy balls" then they can see that 7 billion they lose so much to quickly disappear.

Tangent: Try reading the news and this thread with the LOTR soundtracks in the background. It fits really well. e.g "The End Of All Things" from Return of the King...

Football has been overdue a financial day of reckoning for some time. This might be that point tbh. It has long been a pyramid scheme / quasi extortion racket and the gravy train has to run out of steam at some point. This SL will make the rich: poor gulf even bigger, and insurmountable. The FA, PL and the little clubs would be wise to take the temporary hit now for a better long term future and sling the greedsters out.

Oh yeah, they can run the internationals etc, but in terms of club competition, they'd be done. Much like the FA was pretty much done in terms of domestic club football when the PL was formed.

How about a permanent hit when these clubs owners refuse to bankroll these clubs. Do you really think Mike Ashley will bankroll Newcastle through this?

The problem with this is that FA, PL and the little clubs know most of the money that they make is by association (either through fixtures or being in the same league as) the big fellas. You can't just kick them out.

In fact as we can see, in some ways, one route through this for the big fellas plan is to get kicked out. That would relieve them of having to issue the solidarity payments they're talking about for a start.

There's not a good solution for UEFA or the PL, and they lose either way. I think they should relegate each of the teams involved to the Championship, as they did with the Italian scandal a few years back. It would see a lot of their biggest players leave and cause them pretty significant issues and be a real line in the sand, but wouldn't cripple the clubs or the leagues beyond repair.
