The New European Super (borefest) League

Interesting chat on 5 live earlier regarding Munich, Dortmund and PSG (and Porto to some extent). If they continue to refuse to take part, where does that leave the ESL? You can't really call it a super league without Munich, and I'm sure a split between the 'elite' clubs would make the TV deals less cut and dry - could it backfire on the founding fathers?

They say they want their players to play less football. Problem is, footballers enjoy playing football, and lots of games is what encourages squad rotation and chances for young players to come through. It could end up killing or severely damaging the youth development at these clubs.

Is it a surprise the teams that have guaranteed qualification each year aren't taking part? (well except Dortmund but they have no ambition anyway) I imagine PSG will join in a heartbeat when the world cup is done, they won't want to risk that.

Parish's motivation was self interest. The Super League is bad for the PL and by extension Palace, the big 6 leaving is 10x worse. He says and does what is best for Palace, just like when he didn't want to help the EFL out.
If his motivation was self interest he wouldn't be invested in Crystal Palace. He has a responsibility to his club, it's employees and supporters - thats part of his fiduciary duty as a Director.

I'm guessing the champions league can't be sustained without the teams that are buggering off. Has there been any mention from the ESL if they are having a secondary competition or are they just thinking **** them all knowing the existing competitions are likely to fail.

The Spanish teams are also guaranteed to qualify, didn't stop them.

I wonder how much it would cost for the government to buy out 51% of every football club in the premier league?
They don't have to. They just need to pass at law that from X date clubs must be 51% owned by fans, and that means fans, with a max individual share cap, companies cannot buy or accumulate fan shares, the club can't force a buy-back or dilute the ratio, any further share offering must maintain 51% fan ownership, and no club employees, directors, owners, their families or businesses can have fan shares, and cannot accumulate significant shares of the other 49% without fan owner consent (to stop an Arsenal situation). The government wouldn't have to buy those 51% for each club, just compel them to make the share offering, by law, or face heavy fines and forced action if they try to refuse.

Yes but Covid has killed their resources. They might be worrying that they might not be sitting so pretty in the coming few seasons, when they can’t spend money like it’s going out of fashion.
I realise the motivation is money, and the same would apply to the other teams I mentioned, I was just contesting Shami's argument.

Lol good luck with that.

I think without a doubt that if Kroenke was forced to sell over half his shares, he’d just sell the lot. These are all or nothing men. Some might even think hard if the ESL doesn’t happen.
