The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

It's not just Canon. You can get them for Nikons (and possibly other brands too). There are also universal ones which will fit any camera.

They basically have the arca swiss mount both on the bottom and on the left hand side of the camera. This lets you mount your camera to the tripod in both landscape and portrait orientation with a single bracket. It gives you much more freedom for movement in portrait orientation compared to using the drop notch on the ballhead.

This, basically on a ball head dropping into the notch is not the best idea, not least it will put the center of mass away from the center of the tripod.

Saying that I am just using a basic plate at the moment because when I ordered my RRS Bh-55 I was bidding on a d700 on a Swiss eBay-like site.

I do have replacement feet for my70-200 lens.

Just picked up a Kenko 1.4x Extender for my Canon 7D and I'm giving some serious thought to an 85mm F1.8 having only a 70-200 F4 from 50-100mm range and nothing faster than F4 for indoor/low light pics.

Also, as a bonus to myself, I've just bought tickets to see the Nitro Circus again on the 28th as they attempt a world record for the most amount of back-flipping FMX in the air at the same time, to be done at the O2 London.

On my last Nitro outing (and my 1st real use of the 600D I had) I used my 50mm F1.4 @ F1.4 during the 1st half and Tamron 70-300mm for the second and got some OK pics with the 50mm (centre sharp but poor borders) and some very noisy pics with the 70-300mm (most were too slow). The most focal length I used was only 200mm and the 50mm felt too short so the 70-200mm seems ideal although I am worried about the F4 not being fast enough so I'm tempted to hire a F2.8 mkII for that weekend (£100 for 3 day minimum).

Thinking of picking up a Nikon 85mm f1.8G, $100 rebate ATM, so will cost me about $390 or £250 gbp.

Bargain but I a really trying to save money right now....

Cutting it close a little bit. Digitalrev have been less than useless (giving delivery estimates based on sending it when they were closed for Chinese New Year, advertising stock they didn't have etc.), then Mathers likewise advertised stock they didn't have. Ended up giving up on getting the Tokina 100 quickly, got the Sigma 85 second hand and the Sigma 35 from SRS.

Both have supposedly been sent off already, for delivery before 1pm tomorrow. Given I have a shoot tomorrow afternoon, it's cutting it just a little fine!

That is cutting tight, remember to properly test the lenses before using them. Could easily be back focusing or have misaligned elements.

I got hold of a Nikon 35mm f1.8 DC the day befor I was shooting a civil wedding of a friend. My plan was to use it on my partners D7000 but is back focused badly. I didn't use the micro adjust to correct it but didn't feel comfortable so used it on my d90 as every shot from the get go had perfect focus and so I was just more confident.

The new Sigma lenses are meant to have made everything better in terms of QC so hopefully that's okay for the 35. If the 85 focuses poorly even after calibration than at a stretch I can use my 5D and 85 and just deal with jumping between systems.

Yep it's basically the same as my 3 legged thing looks like you made a saving ,ill know where I'll be going if I need spares paid about 250 quid for mine with ball head ,Chinese knock off with Union Jack flag?lol

Finally, a Triopo carbon fibre tripod. This is supposedly the chinese brand which 3 Legged Thing has copied their design from. In fact, it looks nearly identical to the ones they sell. The best part is that this one is carbon fibre and costs the same as their equivalent aluminium version. Build quality is excellent. I emailed the manufacturer asking how much it would be for me to buy a couple more foam grips and a short centre column. They replied saying that it wouldn't cost anything and all I'd need to pay for is postage. Sweet!
