The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

First impressions? Also what head did you go with? I've been thinking of picking up one of those for travelling.

Used it earlier today and I'm about to head out again soon for some sunset pics.

First impressions are great. It's certainly sturdy enough for my needs and it beats carrying around a larger one. The ball head is the one it comes with (A H5400-652) which is nicely made and both the panning and ball head are smooth and lock with confidence. At £123 with next day delivery I think it was a bargain.

Well impressed!

Electronic viewfinder and ....

i wanna see the strat !

You'll have to wait a bit. I'm waiting for some new pick ups to arrive from the US and I'm changing the pots and switch, and tinkering with the electronics. The lad I've been doing the photos for recently will be fitting it all in the next couple of weeks.

I'm tempted to buy a new neck :o

No you don't need a 780 for those games. The games I have played and completed over the last year though, some of those do benefit from a beefier GFX card at 1440P. Nobody plays the same games all the time once they're completed :p

Until I built my new PC I was using a 560ti with 3rd party cooling. Ran everything, even new games. Obviously not with max AA, etc, but at just under ultra settings. Now I have a 780ti and the opening scene of Crysis 3 at the dock, with everything at maximum is soooooo pretty @ 1920*1080 on my 27" monitor :D

And back to cameras in 5,4,3,2,1 GO!

Is it an American Strat? What's wrong with the neck? You'll end up with nothing original but the body by the end of it!

Few things.

Lent out a lens. Came back with no caps at either end and no lens hood. Awesome. So i've had to order more. No point waiting to post pics we all know what they look like.

Never lending out kit again.

I'd have torn strips off the person I lent it to and made them pay TBH. How can someone that has a need to borrow a long lens like that not know how to look after it?!

What are the benefits of using an electronic viewfinder as a posed to the standard viewfinder on a DSLR?

Well the G1X MkII he's bought that for doesn't have a viewfinder so the additional EVF is a nice add on...bloody expensive though!

In general terms EVF's will and always will be marmite. I prefer the EVF on my Sony A77 to any OVF but initially didn't like it and it took quite a bit of getting used to.

The big benefits for me are having a live histogram and level meter on the same view and having true DOF and exposure preview without the need for a button (I map my AF mode to the DOF button now), there are a few others as well. Some like this type of stuff other don't.

The downsides are battery life, I can get nearly double the amount of shots from a D7000 than I can from my Sony, dynamic range in very bright scenes can result in a blown out or dark preview depending on how I meter and lag which is minor on my Sony but does occasionally occur.

There is also no doubt that you are looking at an electronic image, some love them (me :D) some hate them. There's a place for both.

I wasn't totally sold on EVFs. Even after buying the X-E2 I wasn't completely convinced- the lag wasn't bad at all, but still noticeable, and enough to mean I can blame the camera for missing some shots.

The newest firmware last week has effectively made the lag imperceptible, even in low light. Very impressive.

The kit finally complete.

I say complete (is it ever).... I may check duty free prices for the 14mm f2.8 on my way to Rome on Friday.

Other than that I just need a nice understated messenger bag with space for pants, socks, toothbrush, goretex paclite and an iPad.

Mexican, which = superior :) The handy thing about doing gig photography is that every now and then, the dealers/shop owners let me know of nice stuff that pops up. Generally speaking a £300-£600 Mexican strat is as good as, or better than a standard £1300 US made one. I've no idea why, but it's true! I recently had an awesome one but sold it back to a mate who gigs with it all the time :) This one is a more expensive version that happened to pop up, but is a 70s style, which with a pick up swap will give me a nice sound. Oh and the reason I was thinking about changing the neck is that I like rosewood :D
