The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Well I already had a 1tb m550, so I ordered another to raid 0. It will be used for my LR catalogue/cache as well as scratch disk. OS + Apps will live on the internal pcie ssd and my actual image files will live on a HDD raid 1. I then have 3 Time machine drives taking turns to backup my system every hour. Still in the process of migrating data so haven't actually been able to put the 5K through it's paces. Apparently it struggles in LR5 at the moment but has gotten a little better since adobe released 5.7.1. I'll test it out later tonight.
Personally I'm looking forward to LR6 as it is rumoured to have a big performance overhaul.

After my Canon adapter broke and wouldn't auto focus anymore I decided to go native and got the FE 16-35mm. A bit heavier than I was expecting but looking forward to trying it out!

I may go for a lens like this at some point. Ideally now IBIS is now becoming available, future wider angle lenses won't have to be optically stabilised and should end up a little smaller/lighter.
Met with a couple who might book me for their wedding yesterday. The brides dad apparently is a director at Sony and get's good discount. ;)

That's cool but I have never accept favours from a client, tempting as it may.

This isn't all new but most of it is. I've got everything I need ahead of a wedding in March and more importantly my first child being born sometime this month, so as I told my missus, most of this is 'for the baby' :)

Not sure if I'll keep the A7 now that I have a 5D and some nice primes, it will probably be easier to take the Ricoh GR when I want to save weight but I'm not convinced as I really enjoy using the A7 and the images it produces are incredible.

I've been wanting to replace my D700 for ages now, I just don't get on with Nikon ergonomics, I loved the images it produced but never enjoyed actually picking the camera up and using it. Having regretted selling my 5D2 in 2013 I decided a 5D3 is the way for me, not a D750.

The retina screen is amazing, I think you'l like it (in 2 years).
Also due to it being 5k (exactly double the res) and not 4k, non retina stuff looks just as good as the normal imac 27. I remember that my ipad retina looked great for stuff that supported it, but looked worse than normal ipad for non retina supported content due to interpolation.

Except in this case you practically get the computer for free considering the Dell 5k (which has now come down in price due to imac).

I'm pretty future proofed now. CPU's are not going to be getting much faster anytime soon (unless skylake will use a bigger die). LR6 is rumoured to run much faster, and LR5.7.1 (at least how I have it configured) is running smooth as butter.
Eventually I can just sell the whole imac and buy a new one and literally just plug in one cable and be up and running where I left off.
I also have a backup processing system (rmbp). Again I can just plug in a thunderbolt cable and pickup my work where I left off.

Have you tried Premiere or After effects on it? I was all set to get the iMac 5K a couple of weeks ago (having ventured into the Mac world with a MacBook Pro retina at Christmas) but was hearing that it was pretty sluggish at some things although that was mainly with a 2 monitor setup I think. So at the moment I'm torn between the iMac 5K or a Mac Pro and using my current monitor. The only stores with Mac stuff near me are Stormfront and Currys, neither of which can show you anything other than what's installed with OSX :(

Yeh I heard quite a few of adobes apps are running slow/buggy. Unfortunately I only use LR/photoshop which are running good for me. The only video app I have is Finalcut and that runs well as apparently it has better integration of GPU acceleration Vs adobe equivalents.

OK thanks, LR & Photoshop are what I use the most but I think I'll have to take a long drive to a proper Apple store and try them out for myself to be sure.

When is LR6 out anyway, they usually release around March ?

Other than the fact they use the same resolution, they're fairly different monitors though as far as I know. The Dell monitor has quite a lot more colours if that's what you're into.

Personally I'd rather keep the resolution down and get a monitor that will run at 120hz+ so I can still play games on it nicely :) Might invest in the new batch of 120hz IPS monitors which seems to be on the horizon.
