The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Even better then if within driving distance as you can see it before you buy too.

I did yeah but swapped back to Sony as I wanted to use the 24GM again and the Tamron 35-150 but the size of the 35-150 just made it a chore to carry around.

We’ll see, I’m not set on moving back but I do miss using a Canon body.

If Sony would put their internals in something similar to a Canon body then I’d stick with them but that’ll never happen.

I want to move back to Canon too for a couple of reasons

1 - Colours. I think Canon colours are nicer, and the way the files to process is also easier, the white balance out of the can is more suited to my taste. But i notice the A7R5 has improved
2 - I haven't held a new Canon body though so can't comment how they feel, but my 5D4 was nice, I do miss that. Sony bodies are too short, hence i have to put these bases on to make it taller. I also dislike some of the buttons positions and I dislike how the wheel works. I like the wheel lock on the 5D4 to lock out the presses. The Sony doesn't have that an I constantly hit it by accident.

What put me off however....Canon lenses, the fact that the mount is closed it means there are no 3rd party alternatives. The price of a 85L is like £3k, a 85GM is half that. It also doesn't help that i sold all my EF lenses so it's not like I can adapt it as a stop gap lol. The flashes are also insanely expensive. I thought the 600EXRT was expensive? I think the new ones are like £1k now.

Basically, to get a full Canon set up would be in the region of like £20-25k. And they still don't make a RF mount 35L. Lastly, their lenses are now massive, they have decided to pit IBIS inside some of the lenses too, which is great, except it makes them massive. I quite like the small 35GM now.

I am going to stick with Sony mostly down to cost, the colour science thing, it will trickly down and I will live with everything else.

Quick sum with UK pricing. And missing 24 and 35L so using current versions and missing Canon flashes, but it seems 600EX-RT works so probably go for those. I put in an R6 just because, but 20mega pixels seems low, I would much prefer if they went up to 24.

It's no small change! Those L Primes on RF are Luxury indeed!

I wasn’t actually aware of how much it’ll cost to move back to Canon for you, that’s some expenditure!

Out of those lenses, what could you get away with not having from the off?

Also the R5 is under £3000 when buying grey market, Einfin has it for £2669 body only, almost a £1600 saving over buying a UK body.

Here’s a breakdown from Einfin, only lenses missing are the 135 and 24mm.

2 bodies and the lenses for less than just the lenses in the UK :p

That's some saving going Grey market!!!!

I would give up Canon CPS but for £10k......I wouldn't care, that £10k would pay for another new lens or 5.

But the other things are still true, no 3rd party lens support, and for the stuff that i gain, ergonomics are colours out of the can, i don't think clients would care lol

Side note, a real vanity point of view...I think GM lenses are boring looking as hell. That little Red ring on the L glass is a subtle flex which I loved lol

Yeah the £10k saving is such a huge number that it makes no sense really to spend your money on UK equipment when GM is so popular now.

If I was to go back to Canon I think I’d start with the R5 again, the Sigma 85 1.4ART as it’s just ridiculously sharp along with the Canon 35 1.4L and use the EF-RF adapter as it’s just as good as native mount.

I could do all that for less than £5000, could possibly get £1600-£1800 for the R4 and £750 for the 24GM, meaning only a £2500 outlay to swap back to Canon.

Mine is purely for a hobby so don’t need professional RF glass but I’d want more than 20mp from the R6 and the R3 is wasted on me as I shoot no sports or motorsport.

When the Canon R5 get down to 5Dmk3 pricing (£400), I'll get one definitely and put a 50/1.2 on it. I think that would be fun.

My A7R3 is actually bought for fun, not really necessary to have more than 30mp for weddings really. But it would make a useful back up camera too.

Come back in 2030 and you’ll maybe see the R5 sub £1000 :p

Considering the 5Dmk4 came out in 2016 and it’s still £2500 brand new in the UK or £800+ second hand with mega high actuations, I think you’ll be waiting years.

It's really not a very good camera, I had one at launch. Got a few decent shots with it but the AF is awful!

Yup, it’s awful, my BiL had one, the AF is useless. It’s a novelty and the sensor is supposed to be film esq…

More collecting that actual using but I’ll use it nevertheless.

Also.....part of me want to prove to/or challenge myself I don't need a "good" camera for good pictures.

Film-esque was a bit of marketing :D I has various Fuji presets for jpg processing IIRC, velvia, provia etc?

Bought my first bit of photography kit in a long time, got a used Sony FE 28-60 to go on the A7. Want to start taking the A7 on mountaineering trips more and the 24-240 isn't really lightweight!

Pretty awesome little package the A7 and 28-60.
