The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

I miss the GPS feature, and yes i can do it on the Sony but it doesn't stay connected.

As in i paired it before i went to Japan, forgot about it, got back and checked the image and none of it was tagged. I don't know if i need to have the app opened, the phone screen on, or what. If it never stays connected, if after camera off, battery out, restart phone... it wouldn't get used. It needs to stay connected after all those events.

Once paired, should stay paired, like my airpods. Yes I know some times once in a bluemoon they need reconnecting but it seems the camera does it too often.

I will admit that none of my cameras that geotag photos via Bluetooth have ever worked reliably. Nowadays I just download my Google timeline data periodically and use a python script I found online to do the tagging.

That's really annoying about not recording the geo location whilst you were in Japan.

I'll test later to see the reliability of phone connection on the R5. I don't expect it to be great either tbh.

I make a conscious decision to take a few photos at each spot with my phone partly for this reason.

The R5 has arrived from Hong Kong.

I'm quite surprised how much smaller it is compared to the 5D4, feels good and not too small, familiar. Great Japanese build quality and QC.

I've not been able to take it out for a shoot yet due to work, but I'm pretty amazed by what I see so far. Going from the 5D3 to 5D4 was quite an improvement, but this is on another level. AF is just insane, no way else to describe it. It sticks to eyes and will find them even at 35mm and at a distance. This and the low light level AF lock ablity; it does feel like magic coming from the 5D4. I can see why this is still a highly regarded body amongst the competition of newer bodies.

Noise looks good out the camera on test shots, definitely cleaner than the 5D4 and the bump to 45MP is very nice. Viewfinder is excellent, flip out screen is also excellent and much needed. Generally, no complaints at this stage.

Battery life.... I've taken 90 test shots, 5 mins of 4K video and playing around with the menus for an hour or so to set it up how I like - and battery is at 70%. I'm going to need at the very least another battery. Good thing it can be charged over USB-C PD. I can tell it's not a very power efficient chipset by the how warm the SD card becomes after powering on and just taking a few shots.

One thing I only just realised.. it has no inbuilt GPS! What?! But I will survive!

Hopefully in the next few days I'll get out and take some shots, looking forward to seeing colours out the camera.
Very nice, I think the Canon R5 is the best camera I’ve ever used and I’ve used most of the mainstream cameras bar the Nikon Z9.

Just the RF lineup is severely lacking when you look at what Sony/Tamron/Sigma are offering now.

I managed to get out this weekend with the R5. I really like it, my EF lenses just seem to work better than previous and the adapter is not bothering me as I feared it might.

Battery life isn't too terrible to be honest, I pulled off over 400 shots at LCY and about 8 minutes of 4K video and still had 70% in the tank.

New strap. I have the been using the regular Slide for years but on the R5 it just feels too big and wide.

I have this, I actually have like all 3. From the widest, to this one and also the thin one. I never use the widest one, I use this one for work and the thinnest one is good for the X100 and not much else.

oh, 5D4 for £650!

That's a crazy price for a 5D4, I see it didn't stick around for long. I got £900 for my 5D4. The grip which was boxed sold for only £65, which felt like almost giving it away.

I thought about getting it...lol

But i am waiting for a X-E4 to turn up...which is rare! I see more Leica than Fuji bodies, there are lots of X-H1 and X-T3 and even a couple of X-100F but no X-E4.

Seems like the X-E4 is discontinued? A real shame, as it ticks a lot of the boxes. As much as the X100V appeals to me, shelling out £1350 for a fixed lens camera feels to me like the realms of madness.

I can see myself perhaps in the future selling up the M43 Panasonic and the few lenses I have, and my RX100MkIII and moving to a APS-C Fuji of some kind. The advent of AI noise reduction in post really has improved the light light performance on APS-C sensors. I like the X-H2, probably too big and too overkill though.

I see x-S10 pop up more often now the S20 has been released, I could get that, it’s the same sensor with IBIS.

i got almost 2 grand for my 5d4
The value of them has plummeted, it's crazy. Also check out the 5D3, it's worth basically peanuts now. There's more value in keeping it as a spare body.

That could be a good option. I'm not in a postion to buy another camera anytime soon. I really can't stand my Panasonic M43 camera, it was supposed to be my travel camera but I hate its RAW output.

What is really odd is that the X-H1 sells for about the same price as the S10. The S10 is basically a baby X-T4, it has a lot of it's features, missing the higher dot EVF and video features mostly and only 1 SD card slot. But compared to the X-H1...the S10 is couple of generations ahead in almost all aspects, but they go for about the same price used! Th X-H1 often go for £600 and the S10, there is one for £650.

Probably the cheapest lens available on the Sony System - Tamron 35mm F2.8 M1:2
I purchased this used on eBay for £160 [New they are just £240]. Condition is as new as the previous hadn't used it.

I wanted a general purpose lens for outdoors photos, to provide better quality than iPhone shots. It has a handy 1:2 Macro feature too which is useful.
