The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

:O Need MOAR photos please, this is looking to be my next purchase (and my first L lens)

What body are you using it on? Is it quite a petité lens? Certainly looked that way in the Jessops display.

550D and its my 1st L lens as well so I can't compare it to any others.

Proper lens test will be in end of March when I attend Rally de Portugal. Should put the lens through a decent enough test!

Turned up today and I'm impressed with Jacobs Digital! £449 and pretty much next day delivery!

Nice one Dave :D Have the IS version myself, but then you've seen me using it on WRC events before :)

So much for being conspicuous :D

Did they actually come in yellow or is it a modification? Oh, and you can't accuse us of not appreciating the beauty of it while you're talking about dirtying such majesty by converting it to digital! ;)

That last point is fair, however with the amount I shoot and with my ability only extending to developing B&W film it's becoming tedious taking colour film to be processed and I'd like the option. More pressingly, there have been occasions that I've really wanted/needed the images from my medium format gear and just had to wait until I got home and took it for processing.

Yellow is (was) an off the shelf version. They were somewhat limited editions of the 503 CW from around 2001 to 2004, in red, green, blue and yellow. I've struggled to find out how many were made but they are not easy to get hold of. Yellow wasn't my first choice but getting any of them is hard work, so I got offered this at a decent price and went for it. I'd have preferred red I think.

And comparison vs a 17-55 f/2.8 IS

So not overly big. Makes it a fairly light lens to be carrying round in a bag, as its only ~120 grams heavier than the 17-55

While not an awesome long prime I'm quite please with what the postie just dropped off (Sigma 150-500mm)

Hey Talon

Ive had an eye on these lenes for a while (also the 120-400) and cannot decide which to get (this i need to hire one and see) but in the mean time give us your low down, sample shoot etc, would be really interested to see what you think of it.

Which Camera have you got it on?

Also does it fit into the Slingshot bag in the background (looks the same as mine)

After a long search I've finally tracked down one of these in the states:

Should be with me in a week or two now. I almost bought a vanilla CWD instead but the back in the CWD 'kit' is old tech now and I'll grab a second hand Phase back sometime instead. Besides it's yellow (and exceptionally rare).

I'm curious now as to whether anybody here will appreciate the beauty of this thing...
Oh I am excited to see this thing perform.

Yum yum, I sold my kit lens in my mode from 400>40D That 70-200L looks nice, does it extend much between the ends?

I want one so bad but I can't afford retail (can't afford 2nd hand atm either :()

http://www.rowanhunn.com/70200.jpg just got myself this bad boy...will be putting it through its' paces next week

You'll not be disappointed. I've had mine for about 4 months now and I've not got a bad thing to say about it. Coming from an 80-200mm f2.8 AF-D, the AFS and VR are extremely welcome. A stunning lens.

Enjoy. :D

@ bigredshark...very nice indeed. I actually prefer the yellow to the red one anyway. A nice investment as well as tool.

yeah, i've only had a chance to play about with it in the flat so far, but the af seems lightning quick and i'm getting sharp images at 200mm at only 1/20 of a sec hand held thanks to the vr. I'll be taking it to my parents' place next week for a few days. Will be hopefully getting some nice shots up there of the dogs / kids etc. Then i've got a wedding / london marathon shoot to keep it well used. I sense this'll be with me for a good many years.

I can confirm that my 70-200 IS II isnt parfocal and nor is the older 70-200 IS :( Not so good when using it for video.

Interesting. Searching seems to find a few people saying the f/2.8 IS II isn't parfocal but I was sure all of the 70-200s were - my F4 IS certainly seems to be, within reason of course - I don't think any lens is perfectly parfocal.
