*** The new MacBook/MacBook Pro thread, all info in here ***

I'll just give the Exeter store a go then.

I'm sceptical about the Plymouth store anyway, it's just inside Drake's Circus and calls itself "Stormfront". I assumed it was an Apple store as it only sells Apple products, and is styled like an Apple shop as well.

[Edit] It's listed on the Apple site as a premium reseller. Odd. Doesn't matter - i'll just pop into the Exeter store and talk to them instead.

thats probably why then :p

I like the look of the new MacBooks, not convinced that the Pro and standard should look so similar. But overall, the new trackpad looks fantastic.

As for getting rid of DVI, they see Display Port as being the connection of the future. But yes more adaptors untill we all have display port monitors.

What's wrong with DVI? HDMI? How many monitors support display port...
Apple propriety format just to milk the cash cow

dvi = never used mine, and I bet most laptop owners dont
Actually a lot do, business users tend to work on external monitors. Already shelled out for the one i'm using.

But then they'd have to integrate HDMI into the laptop as well, which would add even more to costs.
The MacBook is supposed to be the cheapest laptop they offer and it would be so much more expensive with blu-ray, HDMI etc.

A bargain bucket Asus-EE has built in VGA port. HDMI/DVI is becoming the norm for most entry/mid level pcs and they can't even add one or the other to a MB/MBP (removed from the MBP) but want to charge you £30 ($30 US) for the privilege for it? They had the cheek to change the port on the MB as well to a new fangled connection type so anyone upgrading has to buy another adapter.

Usual Apple fare, style over substance and locking you into more propriety formats.. though they do have a nice OS, but not for that premium.

O I entirely agree, a VGA/DVI out port could've been left, instead of this new output. However, none of us have any experience using it yet so can't really comment.

I don't understand the hoo haa about DisplayPort. Just go and buy the dongle!

Looking at the design Apple would have had to gone for ports on both sides again due to lack of space if they'd used DVI.

Displayport has some big backers - all the new kit aimed at corporates (laptops/PCs and monitors) from Lenovo/IBM will have displayport as standard. It's the future!

Quick question, if I buy the display-port to VGA cable to hook my MBP up to my HDTV, will this enable me to use my MBP/iTunes as a sort of media center to playback TV shows / movies etc you can buy on iTunes?

Sorry to be a pain but does anyone know the answer this silly question? The dispatch time for the displayport leads keeps going up and up! :D

Hi guys,

Just wondering what the performance difference is between the old gen 256mb 8600gt and the new gen 9400 and 256mb 9600??

The reason I ask is because im weighing up whether I should get the new macbook or the macbook pro??

I mainly use my current macbook pro for office work, watching films, surfing the net and playing the odd game or two, usually consisting of Dawn of War or Total War.

Anyone?? Please..

Anyone?? Please..
I've seen the keynote, and the 9400 has 96% of the performance of the current 8600. He didn't compared it to the 9600 though, but I'm certain that it's faster than the 8600.

I was thinking about something. The new Macbooks are made of glass, so they could break easily when they fall. Hopefully not...

Roughly 3k more 3D Mark 2005 points (5k to 8k) IIRC.

So not a unreasonable boost, but I wish it was more as a 3 year old X1900XTX at 2D clocks will do that, I can't believe it takes more than 3 years to work on performance per watt of 10k 2005/35W

Also I DO use the DVI out.

So this "upgrade" for me has done this:

1. No matt option, sorry but WTF. I want gloss so -1 point there
2. No proper DVI port, ok get an adapter that I have to pay for. -1
3. No quads and the 2.8ghz upgrade costs £170, which IMO is too much -1
4. New GPU, not that bad so +1
5. User upgradable HD +1

-1 for the course, hardly worthy of upgrading tbh.

Shame apple :(

I assume this would work fine as all you are doing essentially is connecting the MacBook to an external monitor. Therefore why wouldn't it play videos on the screen?

I am thinking of doing this to play HD content from my current MacBook on the TV, just got to get a DVI to HDMI cable to test it out.

I agree. I'm not blown out of the water by them. should have put more features in like a Quad and the lack of DVI is annoying as I use one to drive my second screen. I'm sure the converter will cost a fortune like most Apple accesories!
