*** The new MacBook/MacBook Pro thread, all info in here ***

I have needed a Mac to run OSX on for some time. I decided to wait for the refresh/new ones so I could pick up a cheap Macbook second hand.

However, the updates took so long to come around that it coincided with my normal laptop replacement time; so I bought a Macbook Pro to kill two birds with one stone,

Is it me, or are people just going out and buying on a whim. All this 'I couldn't wait any longer' comments....what were you waiting for the first place!
Have people really been waiting patiently for up to 18m for these new macbooks, or does everyone bar me have greens burning pocket holes!?

Well for me it is a combo -
I made the decision to move over to a Mac based on five years of quiet research and monitoring of the Mac OS whilst using MS, and then, when the new MacBook pros came out it kind of pushed me over the edge to go for it.

What I think you're seeing here is the total and utter failure of Vista to deliver the MS promise of a viable future for PC users who 'are into computers'. Therefore; you're seeing many 'switchers' as I understand we're known by, particularly on this forum.

The other consideration is that for many PC users we've witnessed the progression of the Mac OS to a point at which it eclipses MS in a way that WE understand. YOU guys have always told US guys how much better Macs are than PCs.

We just had to weigh it all up for ourselfes - In a kind of PC way - that you might not quite get :-)

For years PC users have listened to Mac users extoll the virtues of the Unix operating system but the evidence hasn't been on the screen for us; reason: we had the excitement of Windows XP, then the Longhorn rumors and now Vista - all of which were lights in the sky of a possible future that would put PC computing into the hands of the users; us; with ever improved interface between hardware and software, an intuitive OS that kept the user in control of operations and a GUI that was at once both esthetically pleasing and a joy to command.

Unfortunately, this has not happened. What we have instead is the mess that is Vista; Bill has walked out and Microsoft's days are numbered - of that I'm positive.

'Switchers' as you neutrally dub us are the rats that are leaping ashore from the vessel that is microsoft's future.
So give us a break - we just seek safe harbor in an OS that allows us to send an email or two, put a graphic together and surf...and that we quietly concede MIGHT be superior to the one we've been using for quite some time.

I thank you for your welcome.
(PC user for twenty years - Mac user for five days)

How do you mean "into computers", as in how flexible they are? In that case, why on earth are you switching to OS/x?

Windows is very good at being both friendly to the dumb person, as well as being flexible to those who know how to dig deep.

I hope buying a MB isn't going to make me into a smug ponce, like some of the posters here.

There is very little wrong with Vista. Get off the bandwagon.

If you think MS days are numbered then, no offense, but you are a total fool. Microsoft are HUGE and most businesses are running Windows desktops, servers and office suites, not to mention the growth of SharePoint (over 100 MILLION licenses sold). Do you really think Apple taking a piddly 10% of the home computer market in the US is gonna dent them?

Seriously, MS are huge and it would take nothing short of an extinction-level event to stop them. Sure they might lose a little more ground to competitors in the home computer market, but I can't see them losing everything in that market, and I cannot see them even remotely challenged in the office environment.

p.s. I can't wait for my MacBook! :D

agreed. i personally like Windows, i find more and more things i dont like about OSX every time i use it. people have to understand theres a difference between OSX and a Macbook Pro.

With the amount of macs making it into uni's maybe the future isn't so bright for microsoft?

I'm sat on the Plymouth campus posting - and whilst i'm doing it from a Mac Pro, i'm doing in on one of about 100 Macs on the entire campus.

Compared to what must be a few thousand PCs.

It's really not fair to compare Macs and PCs like this anyway - they're not aiming at the same market.

Honestly, it won't even make a dent. Microsoft makes most of it's money from server and office licenses, I really doubt a few less people scamming copies of windows will make a difference. Even if Apple take a majority share of the home pc market (which I strongly feel there is a possibility) I don't think it will hurt them. And, even if Microsoft are forced out of the home pc market altogether, I really couldn't see the office and server businesses being threatened and that is the real MS powerbase.

Anyone got any clue how long it normally takes Apple to go from taking & confirming (via email) an order, and actually starting to build and/or confirming that the order is going to be honoured?

I'm in the process of negotiating a sale of my existing MBP but I can't do this until I know for sure that Apple will honour my order (was done with pumaz's HE link - and I'm not in HE).....

Unless Apple start being competitive with the lower-end market, MS have nothing to worry about. When it comes to students you tend to have 2 groups: those who don't have much money but buy stuff as if they do, and those who don't have much money and buy what they can afford. :p

Very true.

Times have changed I guess - when I was at Uni I couldn't drop a grand or more on a luxury like a laptop :(

lol :D

Ordered my MB but I have no real issue with Windows in general. Vista is a bit of a mixed bag to be fair though. It seems to behave differently on every system I use. Probably more to do with the Hardware integrators than the OS. For the record I have no real issues with Vista on any of the systems that I have built myself.

Looking forward to learning MACOSX, its just another string to the bow. Needed a laptop for study purposes anyway so this can kill two birds with one stone.

Here comes the first Mac computer I will own! Can't wait for it =D

Rebate takes a few days, and yes - you pay full price first.
