*** The new MacBook/MacBook Pro thread, all info in here ***

whats quidco?

online for my (last gen MBP) it costed £1471, and in the shop it costed £1339 or something, dont remember.

Quidco is basically a cashback service, you go through their site and a few months later you get cash back :D See here

That's quite a saving over the online HE price, will be interesting to know what others got instore for the new MacBooks?

Do you still get 3yrs warranty on the HE store as i can't see anywhere on the HE store that mentions warranty?

OK, I pulled the trigger and ordered it 10 mins ago and the following is on the way.

Payment and order seemed to have gone through ok, I've also spent hours looking in to Applecare under HE and for an extra £47 I think it's as well to just have it.

This was the best explanation i could find for the HE Applecare confusion and why i opted to spend the extra £47.

"The 3 year standard warranty doesn't have mail in repairs after 1 year or phone support after 90 days however you can take it into an applestore to get it repaired for free (within the 3 years)

the uplift basically upgrades the warranty to full applecare. 3 year phone support and 3 year mail in repairs.

also i noticed that if you buy without the uplift and enter your serial into the support page it only shows 1 year warranty but if you get the uplift it shows 3 years.

this might be something to consider if you are going to sell it in the next 3 years as it will be easier to show that it is still under warranty."

Thanks for the link.

Just FYI not sure if you realised but you have to claim back the rebate on the iPod Nano using a different form. I had a look at the form and since it's a HE scheme I suspect you will have to provide HE information on that page to get back your rebate - might be tricky....

...unless you've heard otherwise?

TBH i couldn't find any info at all about claiming the rebate back so just took the gamble, I'll either get most of my money back by selling the nano or i might get lucky and be able to claim the £95 back as well.

I considered it worth the gamble, would be interesting to here from someone who as claimed the rebate through HE though.

i do a bit of print work, but not a huge amount, but i have to see clients so i need the colors to be what they want on the screen rather then what comes out after things get printed. im no professional so to speak, so professional screens like that i wouldnt really be in the need for, yet.

but as i said, if youre out in a office, bar, or where ever, you want to make sure the client can see whats on your screen when ever possible, and not have to sit somewhere to view it if its not conveinient.

sonys arent known for design, rather then style and office use, same as Thinkpads, even though theyre a beasty of a lappy in specs. i do wish or might still get a Thinkpad in the future as theyre just a reliable piece of kit so ive heard

If you're showing someone in their office or elsewhere then you have bigger problems than the colour accuracy of the screen on your laptop, professional screens come with light hoods for a reason. Are you matching the colour profiles to the printer it's going to be produced on?

I'm just saying, I don't think it's valid to criticise the macbooks for the colour accuracy of their screens on commercial grounds. If you need to show somebody accurate proofs of work then (having spent time working for a big advertising agency) you provide printed proofs, because that's the most accurate of all. Showing them on screen is dependent not just on the screen but lighting, colour profiles etc...

It's something of a loss that you don't have the option any more but I can understand why they got rid of it and I don't think it's a serious commercial issue, rather a personal preference.

The link to the page you need to claim the rebate back on is shown during the order, it's this one, specifically the middle option. Clicking that takes you to a form where you have to enter your details. I tested going through the form but I can only get to Step 2 where it asks you for your web order (which I obviously haven't got). Don't know if Steps 3 or 4 ask you for your HE info, if they do there might be a problem. :)

On the subject of the free Nano is there a best colour to go for if all you intend to do is sell it on? Black seems the obvious choice but there's that Apple-exclusive Red too (though not sure how it can't be anything other than an Apple exclusive when they are the only people who make Nanos?)

any chance of the link mate? :D

I had a play with the new MacBook this weekend and I really liked it but bugger me is it heavy! I think the standard MB is about the same weight as my 17" MBP. Although they are pretty neat I don't think it's enough to warrent an upgrade.

Panzer

Just pulled the trigger on a 2.53Ghz MBP with 320GB 7200rpm drive even though I barely use my existing 2.4Ghz C2D MBP. I hate myself.

No idea how you could do that if oyu dont even use your existing one lol!

Ive decided to keep my 2.33ghz macbook pro and get a mac pro, should be getting it tomorrow! Cant wait!

People who ordered their MacBook Pro via Apple store online in the UK - when are your expected estimated deliveries? Mines been moved forward now to 4th/5th November. Still too long to wait!

Only ordered today so mines still 6-7th. How long after you order does it normally become finalised? I've had the order confirmation email but I still have the option to cancel it if I wanted, I just want them to get on and start building it :D

Well I was waiting for the new ones. These have been rumoured since june/july and I, personally, didn't want to buy knowing the new ones are just around the corner.

If I couldn't have waited, I wouldn't have done.

Yup same here. I was going to get one at the start of September then realised that it had been ages since the last notebook refresh and that I'd probably only have to wait until January at the very latest.

One thing I love about Apple is you can usually guess to +/- 3 months when they'll upgrade products.
