The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

Mine arrived today. Got it unlocked and will have a go at rooting later when I get home from work.

Love it so far, the screen is amazing quailty compared to a tocco lite whcih I payed the same amount for less then a year ago.

Can I ask a stupid question, if I unlock my phone does that mean it invalidates my Guarantee? If I then root it and had all the goodies on it, does that invalidate my Guarantee?

Thanks for the reply Droid, but if the phone is duff, how do you return to the Orangs rom? The other question, if you unlock the phone does this invalidate the guarentee??

Android Task Managers don't actually do anything since Android closes the apps it no longer uses automatically :)

No you miss understand this was a specific error from the modaco custom r3 and r4 roms wich caused the task manager to close itself.

You can flash back to the orange Rom.

Im assuming all this rooting business, is to allow you full open access, so you can grab any apps from the net and throw em on.

Just pretty much have your dirty way with this phone, is there much involved im assuming i'll lose my paid apps i already have?

Just installed Seb's rom, was a bit tricky but got there in the end, finally no more Orange **** :D

The purpose of 'rooting' is to give apps / the user 'root' access to the operating system. Meaning that apps can access resources that are usually locked down (the screen buffer in the case of screen grab apps etc).

Would you guys recommend this phone over others in its price range or ones more expensive?

I have a HTC desire and I love it. I let my misses use it and she now she wants an android
Phone since she's just broke her old Nokia touch screen.

I've told her ill get her a new phone for Xmas so I'm thinkin of a budget of around 200 quid maybe more.
But from looking at this thread I'm not sure what phone to get her.

Any suggestions?

Cheers
Chris

In it's price range? Nothing comes close.

If you spend more money on a similarly speccd HTC, all you'll be paying for is a better brand name and possibly build quality.

You can't get a better phone for £99.

i've got a problem. I've unlocked this and put in a t mobile sim and put in the settings. The things is when I'm on wifi/3g the internet/push email and market work fine, but if i select 2g only none of them works. Is this normal  ? I remember on my iphone 3g there was no real difference between 2g and 3g apart from speed and battery life.

I fully agree with this, ive got a HTC Desire myself which is great, i got mine free on my contract price but the prob was with my wifes contract shes on £20 a month job and they wanted £240 or so for a desire, so i saw these and for £99 there amazing, Id hate to think how many phones ive had over the years but bar my desire the SF is probably the next best in line :) worth every penny

Just noticed this thread. Ive had mine about 2 weeks now, absolutely loving it. Have put the custom rom on. Phone is a true bargain, very happy!

No, You misunderstand. I'm fully verse in the way of force closes. What I'm saying is, the Android platform has no need for task managers / killers. To even have one as an app is moot.

Android doesn't have a "Task Manager", just a recently used Apps list.

Oh right bit like tweakui for windows, just allows you more flexibility.

I do need to lose the orange icons, having two mail etc is really getting on my wick.

Nice to know i can grab for free again once paid.

Otherwise i love it, still can't find angry bird says something about not being available yet i see people with it from the marketplace.

Go figure.

Still plenty to learn seeing it's my first android, everything is chinese to me :D

agreed, absolutely no point, worst comes to worse you reboot

I'd like to reset my SF and try Seb's R4 custom ROM; how do I do this?
I currently have Paul's R3 ROM installed. Will I need to reroot and reinstall Clockwork recovery, or will they not be affected?

I don't mind if I lose all of my settings/apps/data.
