The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

I'm completely unfamiliar with smartphones, Android and so and was wondering if someone could give me a pointer here. I know it's a rather subjective question depending on use but say I picked up one of thes phones on PAYG, would I get far for a tenner a month or if I browsed the web a bit would I start to see my credit dissapear rather quickly. (no videos, just the likes of a forum)

Also, as I'm on Orange PAYG, would they be able to transfer my existing number to my new phone? Any advice appreciated, thanks.

I got this as my first venture into Android smart phones. Last smart phone I had was an N70 5 years ago.

I went through the £10 of orange PAYG credit inc the 100mb internet in 5 days during testing so no it is not enough.

I am on Vodafone sim only and get 500mb per month. This month (in 2 weeks), I have already gone over this so had to pay £5 for another 500mb so the orange PAYG is not enough.

As it costs £0.99p to unlock and you can debrand it using Sebastian’s r5 rom from Modaco in about 5 mins, I would suggest you look at one of the other providers who offer much more internet.

You would want to remove all the Orange stuff anyway as mine ran like a dog until I changed the rom.

If you stay on Orange PAYG your credit will probably disappear quite quickly. However, you can always change to a different, cheaper provider and still keep your current phone number.

Take a look at Giffgaff; http://giffgaff.com/
It uses the O2 network but if you buy a goodybag for £10 you get unlimited texts, unlimited internet (which is actually unlimited), and 100 minutes. Even if you don't buy a goodybag the calls and texts are much cheaper.

Thank you, will start looking at that now.

Edit: Thanks mrk1@1 as well for info, didn't see your reply first time round.

Wow, great packages . Any idea what exactly this means though under the pricing details.

Mobile Internet allowances exclude PC use and tethering.

I know what tethering is, but "PC use" is such a broad term, do they mean you can't connect to your home wifi or just use the mobile as a gateway for your pc?

I was thinking about buying one of these because they're such a bargain, but alas the lack of quad band means it wouldn't work too well in the US :(

They are saying you arn't allowed to use your mobile phone as a modem for your laptop, but in reality they can't tell if you are or not if you're just doing normal browsing.

Thanks for clearing that up :).

Think I may be tempted to give them a go once I sort out my SF situation. The one I bought online in the Orange shop is getting sent back, worst customer service experience of my life. Going to the Orange shop in town when the refund clears.

picked up the phone straight from work and am just waiting on the sim from giffgaff.

the orange shop made me buy a £10sim as well. i asked for just the handset and the guy said it was £109 just the handset, was this a con?

No, you're required to get a £10 top-up with the phone.

Yeh because you should have bought on line for £99 as a student!
