The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

A question to anybody who's in the know for these sort of things - what are the odds of them increasing the price significantly when they see that these are popular? Dirt cheap due to Chinese origin or a loss-leader tactic?

Just checked again. I have the 4x2 version. when i add it as a widget i get a screen to customise

metachi, Sense Analog Clock Widget 4x2

Yeah working now thanks, I must have installed the other one, seems that the "broken" one appears higher on the search list than the one I actually want :-P

Bought mine earlier!

My gosh lovely upgrade from my N97, will miss the 32gb storage, but apart from that it's so quick!!!

Rooted, am on orange anyway so no need to unlock (half way through contract). Great introduction to Android, have a few apps so far, looking for others as time goes on :)

Some people on Modaco are having problems with the alarm not working, however mine is working fine using the stock application and no task killers.

Also I've had no problems with drivers like others seem to be having, I think it's because I have the SDK installed and all the necessary drivers must come with that.

The screen is absolutely gorgeous for the money, the increased resolution over my Nokia 5800 (360x640 vs 480x800) is noticeable. Only issue I have with it so far is that Spotify mobile doesn't seem to take full advantage of the resolution and so it looks "too big", this might have something to do with the amount of Android devices running different resolutions and so the app just picked the nearest smallest one? In love with the Spotify widget I can stick on the home screen!

The browser is on a different planet from the stock Symbian one, not sure how I survived on that one for so long really.

Overall for a first real Android experience it is really good and I think I'll be keeping this for quite a while, if anyone is looking for a bargain then I think this is it! Camera isn't great in low light due to a lack of flash but for £110 (inc mandatory top up) who cares?

I have mine now as well, great phone for 99 squids, alarm works fine for me, the only trouble im having is wifi, i cant connect to my works router, the password is all fine, but it just says unsucsessfull, any one else having wifi probs ?

I had an issue with WiFi but I think part of it is my router because it is a bit flaky at times. I could connect to the router but it wouldn't assign me an IP through DHCP, so I logged into the router through my desktop and set up a fixed IP for my phone and hey presto it worked.

Sounds like you might be having a different issue though, does it keep trying to connect for like 5 minutes before finally giving up?

For the people having driver issues. Im on windows 7 64 bit. When I attached the phone via usb it started to install drivers for 4 things. 2 were successful and 2 were not. I booted my phone and kept the volume up button pressed. when the Android showed up it started installing drivers for fastboot USB on my pac. I was able to root and install Custom Rom even though i still have 2 things that are unrecognised and have no drivers in windows.

Anyone willing to write up a step by step rooting guide for windows 7 64? I don't want to end up doing something wrong.

I just followed the instructions here:
http://android.modaco.com/content/z...superboot-root-mcri-hd-video-demo-now-online/

I also ran the CMD prompt as an Administrator to avoid any nasty problems. You'll need the drivers for Windows 7 64 bit, that Paul guy posted them on Modaco somewhere but I can't remember where. I didn't need to install the drivers though because I already had them from installing the Android SDK.

All went really smooth for me, I was rooted within a few minutes. The video on the link really reassures you as to how simple it actually can be.

Win 7 drivers seem to work for me,

http://flibblesan.co.uk/android/zte_driver.zip

I am just trying to figure out how you to root it, Im struggling and im not really follwoing his video too well, any help would be greatful

Im struggling in oushing over the superboot image, any help please

Which bit? If you're having trouble with file names have you got show file extensions for known file types switched on?

How far "behind the times" is this compared to a Desire?

Well it's obviously not quite as fast as Snapdragon, but in day to day use i doubt if you'd see much noticeable difference. Consider this - a year ago the MSM7227 would probably have been top of the range. Are all smartphones more than a year old unusably slow? Hell no, just because better tech is available it doesn't make everything else obsolete, especially at this price point.

How do you unlock the phone to use with O2?

Easy enough ;)
