The New Stargate Universe Thread

yes, been tried before for other series and have been locked.

Enjoyed taht episode, but why can;t scifi move away from 1 episode, 1 problem star trek mantra.
And more like other series. Where the story line just progresses through every episode

TNG was designed for Syndication from the start so it's to be expected that it would have self contained episodes.

Deep Space Nine did multiple plot arcs very well with the whole dominion war story. You should try Babylon 5 if you haven't, big story arcs that progress throughout the show, it was the first sci fi show to really do that iirc.

original star trek writing guidelines, were that every episode should be self contained, with very few 'double' episodes, the main reason for this was for syndication and because they didn't believe that viewers would want a long running storyline, as it made things harder for new viewers to pick things up. This continued even into the early series of DS9.

JMS on the otherhand, created babylon 5 with a 5 year plan in mind from the get-go, and fought to be allowed to produce it that way. Very quickly, he proved that people wanted a story done like this, and the producers of star trek very quickly realised that it brought in more viewers, because people wanted to know "what happens next?", later seasons of DS9 show this, you could almost say that the change happened along with the disappearance of Ben Sisko's hair.

The only fault with babylon 5, was that the studios lost confidence, not looking at syndication sales, and pulled the plug early in season 4, forcing JMS to fast-track the rest of the story. However, a campaign by fans, made them change their mind, and a fifth season was commissioned, however, it was really an afterthought by then, and it showed.

on the subject of startrek i saw this gem posted on another forum.

its a genuine startrek episode synopsis

Stardate: 42976.1
On an away mission, Cmdr. Riker is struck by a deadly thorn.
As the crew fights to cure the virus or infection he has received,
Riker must be subjected to very emotional flashbacks in order for
the medical team to find the right medical path to take.
sound familiar?

even double episodes, more than one problem. They are still self contained stories that pretty much have no relevance to the story or series.

True, but at least it had the genius of Roddenberry propelling it. There was stuff to learn from it, it wasn't just telling a story about science fiction, it was dragging you there and showing you what you can become. It was creating the future.

As i recently heard an ex-Christian say:

I learned more about morality from Star Trek: TNG than i ever did from the Bible.

Another brilliant episode last night (only dud so far was the Earthbound one with Eli's mum though Cloverfield was on dodgy ground). Some great colonel on Rush action, those punches had been coming for quite a while. Mission revelation was a bit of a let down as I had figured it would be something mundane like seeking out the originators of the galaxy. Redhead looks like she's about to be killed off already :(, why can't they kill miraculous healing girl instead! Also, who let the woman drive?

Is it bad that I only know the evil Lucian Alliance guy as T-Bag even though I've only ever seen the first three episodes of Prison Break?

It would seem Robert Knepper is forever destined to be cast in evil roles (Prison Break; Heroes & now SG:U).

But yea the reveal about Destiny's mission was a bit "oh ah mmm meh" - it would have been better if they'd actually had some kind of ancient message or something which the viewer could have pieced together themselves rather than just being told!

Totally agree about Gin though - why oh why do they keep Chloe and seemingly let a hot redhead take one for the team :/

From the start Chloe's character is that which all men desire. The producers are pushing the idea on the audience that Chloe is "all that". Even to the point that Lt Scott has left Lt Boobs (unbelievable!), and has moved on to Chloe.

Also Chloe isn't exactly bad looking...is she?

Because Chloe is being 'changed' by the ship.. (what people forget is that she and eli were in the front of the ship when she started healing, and all of a sudden understands the ships programming.. nobody seems to have worked out that the 'aliens' had never been onboard destiny, so would likely not know how it worked either, so how does she? because the ship is making her ancient)

Agree about Ginn though, she was a good character (can't say was yet, she's not been murdered by wossisname yet over here)

It's possible that the blue aliens could have gained information about Destiny from the seeder ships which would have conceivably passed through their neighbourhood a long time before Destiny arrived.

Also, she hasn't actually done anything useful yet other than solve a couple of tricky equations for Rush and we all know mathematics is the universal language :p

They have been studying it for some time, and they do have those devices which read minds (which they used on rush) it's entirely plausible that they know everything Rush knows about the ship because of this. From that they could have an understanding of how the ship works (Rush used the exact same method when escaping their ship to learn its layout and control interface).

It's pretty clear is the Blue Aliens that have done this to her, remember that she recognised the blue alien language in the downed ship when her/eli/scot were trying to get back to the Destiny.

Latest episode in the UK was interesting. While it was going at a pretty slow pace, it did provide some answers. I imagine they'll try and decifer the message or whatever it is now that they know about it. Although as others have said, and as the guys pointed out on the Gateworld podacast, it would have been better if it was a genuine discovery on the show, rather than being told.

I do hope you are only trolling, and not actively spaming a major spolier.

If you're referring to me. ( I really don't know why if thats the case) I don't see how calmly discussing what has already happened in the show (upto the latest UK episode) can be considered trolling or spamming of major spoilers.

You need a ban to be honest.

Well that episode was a lot more interesting, took too long for us to get one though, i quite liked the idea of destiny mission but agree it would have been better to see something from the ship than have rush tell us, though theres a chance he's making it up, i mean how far out is destiny in the universe, it would take an incredibly long time to get to the cosmic background radiation even at those speeds surely?

Destiny has been travelling for millions of years, she's older than Atlantis even.

Also, just simply for the matter of wrapping things up in a timely fashion I'd imagine Destiny is very near it's goal.
