The New Stargate Universe Thread

It had such epic potential to show the traditional heroic and good SG people slowly turn more hard edged and I wouldn't say evil but more putting themselves first in order to survive.

instead they tried to do a half arsed coronation street in space.

Gutted. Not surprised in the least, but still..thats sad news :(.

Will just have to wait and see how things play out. I'd expect to see something or other on Mallozzi's blog in the coming days/weeks.

While they cancelled the series, if it ends on a cliffhanger i could see them doing a tv movie/mini series to wrap things up (It's not unheard of, Ark of Truth for instance)

I wonder where the franchise will go now, but i wouldn't say it's down and out completely.

half arsed is the key word there.

the whole thing seems rushed.

They should just create a new SG1, with a whole new cast ... that actually has good people in it and not Ben Browder ...

ark of truth (and the farscape peacekeeper wars) both had absolutly massive fan support, iirc the farscape one was actually funded by fans.

And both where certain to make profit, the movie tying up a sub par 2 season show doesn't have that.

Mmm you have a point, the fanbase compared to what SG1 built up over it's 10 years is pretty poor in comparison. IIrc when SG1 was in it's 10th season they were fully expecting it to get renewed for an 11th. It's to early to say either way. I wouldn't be surprised if the Stargate Extinction and Stargate Revolution movies end up going into pre-production/production in the slot where the filming of a potential third season of SGU would have taken place. (Ofcourse it's a wild speculation).

Well good work SyFy, in a few short years you've managed to destroy one of my favourite Science Fiction franchises. I bet even the movies will get canned!

Not sure I can really invest in any SyFy series anymore, the on exception might be Battlestar Galactica Blood & Chrome if it ever gets the green light for a series. Even then I can't see it lasting... :(

The films are already canned as it was MGM who fronted the cash for the direct to DVD shows. Since MGM are broke and the direct to DVD market has declined I'd say it safe to assume there will be no continuation of SG:U unless another network picks it up.

Glad this has been cancelled to be honest. Have watched every episode and have this morbid fascination with it now so end up watching it every week. I feel that i've put so much time into it I have to carry on watching to see if it becomes any better.

I think i've just been spoiled with sci-fi when it comes to B5 and BSG, nothing can come close to either and I fear i'll never experience that kind of sci-fi greatness again :(

Not surprising tbh. Poorly implemented idea, some bad character choices and lack of direction for the most part.

It was getting better tho but i guess its a bit late.

I hope they manage to get the Destiny upto full power and show us what it can really do in a battle. I don't care if the damn thing blows up I just want to see lots of guns and stuff lol.

What happened to that elite ship the Asguard left SG1 (during that time dilation episode where they all age) - I really wanted to see an episode where that thing takes out an entire fleet of bad guys.

anyway im glad this is beeing cancelled aswell it was a heap of crap maybe if they actually had a plan and the episodes led somewhere it might not be cancelled...

Nope, it made an appearance in the "Ark of Truth" when they went to the Ori galaxy to try and stop the invasion.

They did have a plan, a five year plan in fact.

It's never been said they've been canned. Scripts are written and Brad Wright is still pestering the relevant people to keep them alive, and it's all about waiting for the right time to produce them. As you point out the dvd market has declined a bit and mgm have had some trouble.

That being said now that mgm have filed for bankruptcy and a takeover by Spyglass, which wipes out a fair amount of thier debt, things should start looking up.

For anyone whos interested in the specifics

The upgraded ship was indeed advanced. One by one, using the beam weapons, they were taking apart the ORI ships (previously all weapons seemed to have virtually no effect).

They then took those beam weapons and upgraded their other ships, though the ASGard knowledge base (or ASGard Core, as they referred to it), was limited to that specific ship. Carter had a half a lifetime to study it.

The upgraded ships used those beam weapons to devastating effect, against the replicator ships. From what we saw, I believe those beam weapons were the most powerful weapons in the SG universe.

At the end of the last episode of SG1, I know that they went back in time (right at the end of the episode), but for the life of me, I can't remember if they managed to salvage the ship, before it blew up. The Ori ships which were hounding them, were doing so by tracking the ASGard core. Did they eject the ASGard core? Perhaps someone can remind me. EDIT: Ansar, answered the question...they did salvage the ship.

Carter did eventually come up with a way to shut down the core and get the ship out of harms way but they no longer had enough time to implement the solution due to the imprefectness of the time freeze. Finally she devised a method to reverse the time freeze to the point where it was first initiated in order to allow the implementation of the core shut-down. The plan required that one of them remained old in order to retain the knowledge gained during the time freeze however so Teal'c was volunteered for the task due to his unnaturally long life (this also left him with a line of grey hair due to his advanced age). Once back in the present (though technically we never left the present since they were living in an artificially extended present) Teal'c uploaded the changes allowing the Odyssey to escape but further use of the Asgard was prohibited due to the Ori having the ability to track the ship wherever it went in the galaxy.
