***The Official 5900X \5950X owners thread***

So being the proud owner now of a 5950X I am concerned of what appears to be high running temperatures, I know they run hotter than Intel, but I would like some reassurance . In AIDA64 it says it is CPU 52C idle, CPU Package 63C , Under stress test using CPU-Z CPU is 59C, CPU Package is 71C. How do these temps look ?. Thanks

Seem high to me

Well I have managed to bring down the temperature a lot by changing the power plan to "Power saver", this is now showing as CPU 38C, CPU package 45C, Stress test on CPU-Z is 68C after 5 minutes. The only background app running is Onedrive, but that's a measly 3%. Looking at other forums it would appear that these do tend to run on the warmer side compared to Intel, which I have always used up Until now

That measly 3% could be it. I had iCloud Drive syncing work files, and using 2%, but the cores voltages were boosted.

As Robert Hallock says, it was something in the back. They only recommend Balanced mode for Ryzen 5000

My idling temps here on Balanced mode.

I wouldn't worry personally I've had mine in the 80's and even up to 90 before I got the cooling sorted out. Nothing blew up. Those idle temps are a bit warm but that depends on your cooling solution it won't affect the chip though.

Check background apps, some keep the cores boosted.

Thats true even Chrome with a lot of tabs open will do it.

Thanks everyone for their help. Moved back up to balanced power plan again, its shot up to around 45C again and 68C on stress test, so not too concerned. Maybe a larger cooler will lower these temps, but I think the Noctua NH-U12S will do for the time being, especially as its almost silent in operation.

Honestly instead of getting a new cooler, maybe swap out the fans with the new Noctua AF12 ones that are on the U12A?

Also i found once iCloud Drive was done syncing everything to the new system, my cores went into sleep correctly. Could just be your OneDrive is working; but also make sure you have the latest Windows update for the powerplans, and AMD chipset drivers.

Hey, I have a request, could you check how many mhz you have in 5950x during prime95 smallest fft. (On stock setup)
Mine is 2900 mhz during test a 5950 x may 3400 mhz base clock ...

Guys, can someone tell me why the boost override is not working for me? I have a 5950X, Gigabyte Aorus Master, latest BIOS and custom loop. But, no matter what I set the override boost too, 5MHz or 200MHz, nothing changes. The change is reflect on the Ryzen Master Dashboard but the actual clock stays the same, single and multi-core. Curve optimiser has no effect. Scaler doesn’t make a difference. CPU sits full pelt at around 60C so it’s not a temperature thing. But... I can manual overclock to 4.6GHz no sweat... what is going on???

EDIT: Seems current BIOS only support AGESA 1.1.0.0... PBO2 is supported in 1.1.8.1. Strange that the settings are in the BIOS... but don’t work? I thought the max boost override was part of PBO1 so should still work?

I have just bought a new pc build with a 5950x as it was in stock but now I keep reading that it’s not as good for gaming as the 5900x or 5800x is this true?

Not at all, the 5950X is more than good enough for gaming whether the game is very lightly or heavily multithreaded. Even stock it's really fast and I came from a 9900k that I ran at 5ghz all core. Gaming is what my CPU will mostly see and I absolutely love it.

Ah ok great I’m coming from a 9900k too, thought I had made mistake haha thanks

It is only 'not as good' if you're considering value OR you are only using it for gaming (in which case there is a fairly nominal difference between the three).

For most people, the other options are a more astute purchase.

This doesn't show 1% low frame rates but you get the idea:

Not really any difference when it comes to FPS.

I’m glad I popped into this thread. Was wondering why my water temps were so high on my custom loop. I’m running a 5950x and 3090. My water temps are going up to 36-37c. Ambient temp between 22-23c with black ice nemesis 1x280gts and 1x420gts with fans running at 1400rpm. Was running a 2080ti and 3900x before water temp about 10 above ambient with fans at 1000rpm. Thought I issues with my loop.

Seems to be a strange processor as far as temperatures go. My Ambient room temperature is about 21C, so mine running with all background apps turned off runs at 36C, but as soon as Onedrive is turned back on it shoots up to 60-65C, though stressing the PC only goes up to 70-72C which I find strange. I have lodged this with AMD technical to see what's going on here. a 30% increase in temperature does not in my books seem right for a 3-5% usage increase. On the other hand there is 16 cores running, so maybe the heat generated is correct. Also by comparison another PC running an Intel i7-7700K is running at 33C with nothing running, but around 55C with Onedrive running and 72C under stress, so maybe the 5950X is behaving as it should. I have yet to test my 3rd rig with an i7-8700K

Yeah I've given up worrying about the temps, even going to the Windows Balanced mode, I idle around 32 but as soon as I open Chrome, or pretty much anything that isn't already open, it will spike all over the place. I find it really puzzling when it peaks as high as 60 for a couple of seconds. I sit at around 65-70 when gaming, but COD for example, occasionally at the start of a round or at the end of round, I'll get a quick spike for 1 or 2 seconds up to 80
