***The Official 5900X \5950X owners thread***

Kids aye!

Tell him I've got an i7-8700 I'd swap with him for it and if he agrees give him a little slap haha

You must be old school like me. Nothing wrong with a teach a lesson tanned bum :D

He's got my old 5960x so he's already got a good rig. It's all hard line with crazy RGB that he sets to solid blue.

But because of his autism he likes what he likes.

He now wants mic arm, £79..... What..... For a old lamp arm ??? :)

Grabbed a 5900X (along with 32GB of 3600MHz RAM) to future proof a bit, while it won't make any difference for gaming going from 5800X + 16GB 3200MHz RAM, the extra thread count + RAM is gonna help quite a bit with running VMs and compiling.

I'll most likely take the same route with PBO undervolting like I did with 5800X (125w PPT, -15 curve) which maintained score of 15000~ in CB R23 multicore while lowering temp (75c max) and power draw, so if I can get the same result without losing performance with 5900X, I'll be happy.

I'll most likely take the same route with PBO undervolting like I did with 5800X (125w PPT, -10 curve) which maintained score of 15000~ in CB R23 multicore while lowering temp (75c max) and power draw, so if I can get the same result without losing performance with 5900X, I'll be happy.

I was looking at doing the same going from a 5800x to 5900x. Would make minor difference since I just game. I’ve just got the upgrade urge and I’m sitting out this round of cpu/gpu upgrades so it’s really the only think I can do.

Well it appears that both 5900X and 32GB RAM I got are both duds, I've had nothing but crashes since upgrading, went back to 5800X + 16GB and it's stable.

I'm just gonna return both and keep my current set up for now and upgrade to maybe 7700X when B650 Mini-ITX/Micro-ATX motherboards are available, should be in 2 weeks I believe.

I've done everything I could think of, but I've concluded it's the CPU and possibly the motherboard, I spoke a bit too soon on the RAM, which is fine, so at least I don't have to return both things.

New CPU + old RAM, old CPU + new RAM, old and new installation with either combo, tried redoing graphic drivers with DDU, including different versions, even updated motherboard BIOS (which I did after I started getting crashes), which didn't help, and after going back to 5800X, the crashes were still happening, which was concerning at first, but that went away when I flashed the previous BIOS back, so basically I went back to the exact same CPU + motherboard BIOS version combo I was using before.

It's possible that the motherboard (Gigabyte B450-I Aorus) is picky, it's very rare that CPU is the issue, but at least I have things running stable again and I don't want to mess with that, 5800X is still decent enough so I'll stick with that for the time being (but also because with the current BIOS, 5900X and 5950X are the only upgrades I can do, 5800X3D requires newer BIOS, which gave me issues as I mentioned above).

I got my 5900X back and no issues this time, but I'm running with a different GPU and PSU this time around, if I had to guess, it was the old PSU that was the issue, leaving it on stock for now, I'll adjust curve and PBO settings when I have an entire day free.

I'm just glad I got everything running stable with the new CPU installed.

I will be a grabbing a 5950X upgrade from 3900X which will last me realistically 6 to 7 years easily unless it ides before. I only code mostly and light gaming.

I have an 5900x so in windows 11 power mode setting I have switched it to Best power efficiency running CPU benchmarks cinebench and cpu z multi and single its getting exactly the same scores no drop in performance compared to balance I have tuned PBO per Core the temps are the same at full load power is slighty lower clocks are the same

I noticed in general use or idle cpu uses less power I always thought using best efficiency drops performance windows used to call it power saver

I've just done the same. My 5800x has always been a ridiculously hot sample (hotter than an OC'ed Prescott hot). It temps have progressively gotten worse in the past months and I can only run it well undervolted (1.23v) and underclocked (4.5ghz) to keep temps under control. It hits >90c at anything over 1.3v even with my AIO or Alfenfohn Brocken with a quality paste job. ...Time for the 5800x to go.

I did the math on upgrading platform to AM5 or LGA1700, but for my usage (mostly 4k gaming, Neo4j, VBA/Excel work and light video encoding) it's not worth it at current prices. Incidentally, I had a friend when I was back in the US last week who sold me his 5900x for a steal, ~£230. It was really the best path for me at this point, and I really don't see needing to upgrade again for a while.

Thinking about going down this route, too. I don't game that much on my desktop these days ( MSFS2020 and TW3 ), but I'd like an upgrade that boosts general performance including productivity eg. Photoshop, video editing / encoding. If I only used my desktop for gaming I'd probably just get a 5800X3D. The cost of buying into the AMD gen 5 platform isn't appealing - new M/B ( and the prices are crazy ), DDR5 memory plus CPU - and all for a performance increase only slightly above what the 5950X would offer.

No point buying into a that platform now, it's way too expensive and there are no new features that will benefit me. 3900X to 5950X is perfect upgrade path and the reason why I bought into this AM4 platform longevity. I can now sit on the 5950X for as long as I want 5 years, 6 years even 10 years if I need to. We have reached a point of diminishing returns in my opinion where unless every second is critical and will cost you money, this AM4 generation of CPUs can realistically last a decade.

However, if I was self-employed and every second counts the new platforms would be worth in for time saved which probably leads to increased productivity.

Even then, I have my doubts. Zen 4 processors may have a slight performance edge over Zen 3, but they aren't as power efficient eg. a 7950X can hit 300W ( vs half that for a 5950X ). Same situation for the latest Nvidia GPUs - increased performance but at the cost of a big increase in power consumption. In the current climate, where the price of energy is going up, who wants to afford the running costs of this new hardware ?

Ive just pulled the trigger from a faulty 5800x which only runs on single dimm to a 5950x
Just cost me over 400 on flea bay and brand new and should easily last me for the next 5-6 years.
I have the latest bios running on my impact Itx ASUS mobo with aio silent loop 2 in a Razer Itx case.

Good find. I haven't seen any close to that price in recent weeks. I won't bite whilst prices remain north of £500 ...

Decided against upgrading platform as really no real world need for pci express 5 and thunderbolt 4
Prob will skip Nvidia 4 series cards too
More than happy with my rtx 3070 and 1080 ti in other rig

New 5900X owner here, upgrading from a 3700X.

The plan is to install it this evening. Will be replacing the Dark Rock 4 with an Arctic Freezer II 240. Bios already updated to the latest version and chipset drivers updated too. Hoping the system refresh goes well!

Just make sure to read the mounting instructions and use the offset holes with the correct orientation for the freezer II for best temps.
