** The Official 8800GT 512/256mb Review/Overclocking Thread **

Accelero S1 performs amazing, yet when you look up reviews for it comparing it to the likes of the X1900XTX stock cooler, the S1 only shaves a couple of degrees off at load.

http://www.ocia.net/articles/acceleros1/page4.shtml

So it's obvious the 8800gt stock cooling is woefully inadequate at proper cooling. Yes they can work fine at high temps but it seems like nvidia wants all the gt's burned out by the time the next wave of upgrades are on the horizon :)

edit: just noticed that's without a fan

Theres was no active cooling used on the review, it was running passive, when they said s1 fan on they meant the case fans

Most likely, although the thread im refering to does not ;) >

Not that i care either way.

LOL. This was addressed a few pages back mate ;) FYI

"I wanted to point our news readers to a thread in our HardForums that specifically addresses rumors that there are mass amounts of defective 8800 GT video cards. Looks as if it all comes down to one new GT owner with his panties in a wad. We have seen nothing that points to not being able to buy any companies' GeForce 8800 GT with anything other than confidence."

And this

"Given the unfounded rumors we have been exposed to about NVIDIA’s new GeForce 8800 GT having BSOD and DOA problems, we have kept on top of this story all day long. After personally talking to BFGTech, EVGA, and XFX this afternoon, none of these AIB partners have seen anything that points to the GT being a problematic card. If anything, out of the thousands and thousands that have already been sold in North America, we can point to less than 15 cards being RMA’d in total to the companies listed above. From our vantage point here at HardOCP there seems to be no real issues with DOA or BSODing GeForce 8800 GT video cards. I would suggest you can purchase an 8800 GT in confidence. I will stay in contact with BFGTech, EVGA, and XFX to make sure they don’t start seeing any issues out of the ordinary."

Those quotes are actually about PF Prophet (now permabanned from [H]) who started a malicious thread about GTs from a certain brand being DOA.

JonnyGURU is still a respected member of the community, despite his claims about GT hardware failure from memory overclocking.

Curious if all the "8800gt is like a jet engine" complaints are all from people with other makes...

My BFG 8800GT feels the same volume as my BFG 8800GTS, just unbelievably quiet. Even ingame in like...crysis where the card should be working quite hard its hard to hear anything at all (clocked @ 700/2000/1750 ish).

I think you need to manually change the fan to high-speed to make it really noisy. On auto settings, the temps can go up into the 90s, but the fan won't ramp up to high speeds. They must be confident that these cards can withstand sustained high temps.

I was addressing the general Fud about GT failures.

ohhh i see i see!!

jeez they're like vtec's :D

@ all people who say their graphics card is silent and runs to 90 degrees in crysis;

THIS IS NOT GOOD.

the only reason it is so silent, is because its on 25% fan speed, and it doesn't increase.

use custom fan profiles, this is the best way.

my card is now on 720/1900 super stable and it never hits above 68degrees with 80% fan speeds.

Its fine at stock speeds it is silent, 82 degrees is fine.

is 80 degrees not bad for the cad in the long run?

mine idles at 48-53 (depending if my heating is on)

and now, with the heating on with ati tool scanning artifacts and "DX9 Real-Time High-Dynamic Range Image-Based Lighting program " it doesn't exceed 68 degrees.

No 80 degrees is fine, everyones GTS's ran at like 80+ and no one was bothered.

GPUs are designed to take a lot higher temp so it will survive even in temp in excess of 100C, unlike CPUs.

I'm not saying it's healthy at that temp but just saying 85C-90C under load is the norm in GPU.

ah thx:) didnt notice it had fan settings...!

Right just tried crysis at my stock fan speeds and yea it was on 25% fan @ 700/2000/1750 and the temp was going to 88 degrees. I've set fan speed to 50% now and i can hear it a little more but certainly not so it'd bother me and its now 78 degrees max so that'll do me nicely.

Why are people getting worked up on the temps of these cards, the 8800GTS 640 was reaching 80 for some and the 2900XT is the same story.

The threshold for nVidia cards is like 125c, 80 is nothing.
