***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Thanks lowrider007 for posting the info and with the excellent links! Does everything that most people on the move would want and with the cost of solid state memory falling should end up with bigger "Hard Drive" as standard- I have a 8Gig £20 usb . I would imagine they will be in short supply for some time!

what do the different classes mean when buying SD cards?

I have seen class 6 and class 4 8Gb cards for resonable money and wondering what the difference is ? How long before the 32GB cards are sensible money as £300+ is a little high for me :)

EDIT : lazy me , so class are the best :)

google found

SD Speed Class in Actual Use

Class 2 Card:
A speed of 2 MB/s or higher is guaranteed at the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied.

Class 4 Card:
A speed of 4 MB/s or higher is guaranteed at the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied.

Class 6 Card:
A speed of 6 MB/s or higher is guaranteed at the best fragmented state where no memory unit is occupied.

These things look sweet, although I think I'd like the option of going down the Windows route, and on that note would probably have a greater interest in the 8G model. Will have to see what the end of Nov brings....

howto installl XP from USB pen

I am assuming readers has a working knowledge of DOS commands.

TO MAKE A BOOTABLE DOS USB DRIVE:

Download the following file:
http://rapidshare.com/files/63471556/US … le_DOS.rar

Contents:
1) A USB format utility to make a bootable device.
2) A folder containing the boot disc content for DOS, just copy everything into the root of the USB drive

WINXP Installation:
1) Copy the \I386 folder from your WinXP CD into the USB Drive (min 1GB drive to hold WinXP and EEE drivers)
2) Set your system BIOS to boot from USB.
3) Delete all partitions from the SSD using FDISK and create a new one with a main partition and a 1GB extended partition.
4) Set the main partition as active, this will mark it bootable.
5) Reboot the EEE using the USB drive to effect partition changes.
6) Format and transfer DOS system to SSD main partition using: x:\>format Xs
7) Format the 1GB extended partition as well.
8) Run SMARTDRV
9) Go into the \I386 directory in your USB drive. Run XCOPY . Y:\I386 (where Y: is your 1GB extended partition.
10) Copy SMARTDRV.EXE from the \DOS directory to the root of the main partition on the SSD.
11) Remove USB and reboot the EEE
12) Once in DOS, run SMARTDRV
13) Goto the extended partition \I386 folder and run WINNT

Good luck!

Anyone know if its possible to upgrade the disk drive in these?

Or will i need to expand it via USB or something?

Ill wait for the 8G/16G version to make it worthwhile - shame the 1001 isnt going to turn up...

ps3ud0
Is the 1001 the 10" version?
*edit* Just seen, it is, but it's been cancelled which makes sense to what you said. But there is rumors of an 8.9" ... model being the 801.

From what Ive read nothing is user-upgradable within the unit so you will have to use external devices or flash memory to increase the inbuilt disk drive...

Yep as you said - seems that other Asus laptops would be affected if they made a 10" model which is a real shame. Unsure what real benefit a 8.9" is over a 7" screen...

No worries then.

SD Card/USB Stick is fine :p

Really tempted to order one of these.

Has anyone got any pictures of it in black?

My google skills fail me :\

:edit: Moved to laptops :p

http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1213/asus_eee_pc_exclusive_inside_look/index.html

The kit includes a 104 page manual, a handy charger, a support DVD (You need an external DVD-ROM) and a quick-start guide. Also included is a very nice neoprene protective case that comfortably covers the Eee PC all in black.

:)?

EDIT: Just read this in the same article...

It comes in a neat little package (Dimensions: 22.5 x 16.4 x 2.15~3.5 cm) with five different colors available, from the pastel green, blue or pink, to white or black. In the eastern countries it is already selling as fast as they can get them onto the market. The west however would be a little more circumspect and perhaps needs some time to grow into them.

Oh okay.

Just spotted they're actually on OcUk already...teaches me not to read the entire thread. :)

Reviews? Surely they're the same? /checks.

Yeah they are the same... I just want pictures of the black version (hopefully to be found in reviews). I would have thought there'd be some reviews of a black one by now really, seems odd.
