***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Has anyone seen the Belinea S touchscreen UMPC? I havent found a page that doesnt link to a non-OCUK supplier, so you will have to Google it. Same weight/size roughly of the Eee, but has 1GB RAM, Windows :(, 1.2Ghz processor and is touchscreen. Anyone used one?

Heres mine.....1gig of ram running an nlited version of xp:D

Looks great, nice size comparisons..the mouse looks like a brick next to it. Nice for those of us who have not seen one in the flesh!!

How much space does it use after the nlited XP install.. and how long did it take to do..

This really is a versatile little machine. It fullfills its job as a travel device perfectly and is used for streaming foreign audio/tv in those places where a larger device just isnt so practical.

Under the duvet! ;) :D

I broke my blacky already :(

I was playing about with xorg.conf and now I can't even boot it to the a command prompt. I get the starting up screen and then it goes black and I can type junk onto the screen but it doesn't do anything. I heard that holding F9 does a restore but it doesn't do anything. Any ideas before I go and hunt for a DVD drive?

You lucky *******! :p

How are you finding the eeeXubuntu? Does all the hardware work ok?

Yeah eeeXubuntu works right out the box. I use Ubuntu on my desktop so that is why i made the change from Xandros. KDE desktops are too ugly for my tastes even after customizing them... i just don't like the setup.
The more pics i see of the black ones the happier i am with my white version.

I could do with having 8gig for the main drive but for what i am gonna use it for, i wouldn't be able to justify the extra price. It really is just a toy for me to mess around with and use for work and gaming here and there whilst traveling.

I'll try and get some pics of it up with my customized desktop to show you all. I am using a slightly different layout to my Ubuntu setup but i think i will change that one once i get back to Uni after Christmas. This setup is a much more efficient use of space having just 1 bottom bar fixed and the top app/menu bar being hidden.

Games
Steam runs fine over WINE, although i am getting a few errors on startup and crashes in game that i need to fix. Not tried any more demanding games than Open Arena or HL1/Opposing Force but someone over at EEEPCUser forums has gotten stalker to run

Screen
People needing a bigger screen are the sort of people that always want more. If a 10" screen put £80 on the RRP then i wouldn't have bought one. It is jus the right product at the right price for someone like me. Using Opera and its superb resize function all web pages have rendered perfectly so far and are easily readable.

Speakers
The speakers are as tinny as most laptops but they are fine for my viewing of TopGear/Monk and a few podcasts that i have been listening too.

Keyboard
It is about as well designed as it could have been i think. It is small but i can type pretty quickly using multiple fingers. The only thing i keep having problems with is the number 1 and 2 keys because there is a button missing on the top row! I keep pressing 2 when i want 1 and 3 when i want 2

If there is anything else specific that people want to know then let me know.

A 10" screen would allow you to have 1024x768 and pretty much universal webpage compatibility. For £80 extra i would gladly pay it, the screen is the only thing thats stopping me from buying another one.

But £80 extra brings you into budget Celeron area.

Ive just ordered a 7" Touchscreen overlay for my Eee. £35 Delivered =]
First thing Im gonna do too with my 8G if it isnt too invasive...

Is yours a hard coat? Please post a thread on how you get on with it...

Not at a 7" size which is the main reason most people are buying this...

ps3ud0

If EEE 8G is £300 it's already into super budget laptop pricing, but not at this size.

BTW 2gb of ram is good for if you're on XP, and set no swap file, and want to fit as much ram as it'll ever need.

My dilemma is wait for an 8g, or buy a 4g and use the spare space for a 1.8" HD (120gb) :D

TBH do that, there are no major disadvantages

1.8" Hard drives suck 500ma of power so beware that this will reduce your batt life. Its very easy to put a 1.8" HDD in your Eee but id recommend putting a switch in to turn it on and off this is what i am planning on doing.

Ive also been looking at using software power controls, for example if you tap into the power on the webcam port you can turn what ever is connected on/off using a shortcut key. :p

the way to do it is hook up an internal USB connection. There are two ways to do this:

1: solder to locations on motherboard, attach a USB socket.
2: use the USB webcam cable header to a custom cable going into a USB passive hub, connect the camera to this and that leaves three free ports for extras

Buy a 1.8" to USB2.0 caddy - can be found for <£5. Strip out its internal board, mount inside eee with the HD plugged into it. Yes the drive will drain the battery a little faster than before but it's worth it for the amount of space gained and fitting a switch is easy

The USB webcam header is probably the best connection - requires no soldering

there's how-tos on eee user forums. add this plus bluetooth, pen drive etc :D

EDIT:there is a 1" microdrive available that'd fit easier. it's only up to 12gb though
