***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Sandisk ( i think?) are producing SSD drives now, same as the 8gig internal of the eeepc 8G, in sizes of 8 or 16gig.

Itll slot into the mini pci :) if you have one..

little update, i put vista on, fan ok just nneeded a gig or more of ram. (running sidebar and ie and such) Then I did the mov winsxs folder and broke it -.-

I think im gonna try xandros for a bit :)

Here's my little fella with the ram upgraded to 2gb and a coordinating Western Digital 160Gb passport:

Really tempted to buy one of these over a new GPU after Christmas. A few questions though:

1-I heard that adding to the RAM no longer breaks the warranty. Is this true? How easy is changing the RAM? What RAM do you need?

2-Is anyone running any other Linux distros on it? I would rather have Ubuntu than Xandros. Does it work with all the hardware, and is it easy to get working? I tried Ubuntu on my desktop and couldnt get it working with my wireless card. As a bit of a Linux noob, would I be OK putting Ubuntu on here?

3-Anyone finding the SSD too small?

4-Do you get recovery disks with it? Drivers, the OS etc?

5-I love the toenail clippers in the above photo!!!

1. It has been confirmed that in USA and Canada you're not breaking the warranty ... not sure if they've confirmed in the UK yet (but I was only £200 for the Eee so I can deal with that!) Laptop sodimm is what you need. DDR-2, 667 mhz (PC2-5300). Only one slot so get a single large stick. After removing a couple of small philips screws you pull out the old ram and stick in the new stick!

2. Can't comment as I'm an XP fan!

3. Not been an issue with my current XP install. I still have 1.2gb free even with the bloated Windows Media Player 11. Have moved My Documents and temp files to a 4gb SDHC that sits permanently in the slot, and run Office 2007 from usb stick. Oh, also disabled the swap file.

4. Yeh, there's an Asus DVD with the drivers on;

5. Thank you. Male grooming is important to me ;)

I've installed eeeXubuntu and it's much much nicer than the default Xandros install. I've not had any problems with hardware other than the hot keys but hopefully they'll be fixed soon enough. Most impressively, Compiz Fusion ran with no fuss and looks dead sexeh.

Im very seriously considering just getting the 4G and modding the hell out of it rather than the 8G due to the smaller outlay if it all goes wrong - potentially consider adding a bigger SSD and everything (touchscreen, bluetooth, 2GB ram - what else?!?)...

The problem I have is that Ive already got a laptop through work so dont really need one - so confused

Can someone who has one, who is into modding it, create a new thread just to index eee PC mods and distros with links. I think that would be really useful rather than trawling this thread if kept clean...

ps3ud0

would it be possible to "fit" in a pci connector for thos missing it? or do these new ones have completely diff mobos?

Nice to know, cheers. I hate being a poor student! Really want to afford a skiing holiday over easter, but the Eee is more and more tempting! Grr.

Seconded. I'd love to see a quick summary of all the possible mods.:)

To be honest, it's not all that useful as a machine for any sort of work but it's a great little hobby play thing.:D

It would be pretty useful for me as a student to be able to take it to the library and hook up to their wireless network-all the PCs there are always full. It would also be a nice thing to be able to carry around in my bag and take lecture notes with-a full size laptop is a little cumbersome in lectures on crappy small tables.

Yeah, I really wish I had one of these when I was a student. I always felt my MacBook was too big for lectures.

Do any of you Linux geeks out there know if there's a nice way to create a restorable image of my install as it's nearly perfect and it would be a shame to go and completely bork (inevitable) it and have to start again.

You can use the dd unix command to do this, heres a small article explaining how to use it:

Well how misinformed was I? haha.
I was told by the sales guy that they wouldn't be in stock till the new year. So I canceled my order then I saw a new ETA a few days later and quickly reordered. Mine arriveds tomorrow with a 1GB sodim module (there are no 2Gb modules at OCUK :( ).
I hope I have a mini-pci connection sitting pretty next to my ram, but I'll probably have that 'B' model without one.

I'll only be using this thing for lectures and programming away from my main rig. Finally I can do my programming assesments by the lake with a nice 3.5h battery life instead of being stuck in my ancient uni room. :D

I think it'll be a common occurence for people at my uni, i've already spotted 5 of these so far in my lectures.

You at York uni?

Also, the ones that OCUK have in stock at the moment are only 2gb of memory arent they? How much space does that leave you with for storing files etc? Is it worth waiting for the 4gb ones to come back into stock?

Do the Eee PCs take SDHC, or just the old SD cards?
