***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

I'm using a 1gig module in mine with page file disabled running windows XP Tablet Edition and I'm never RAM limited...

I'd wait for the 4gig ones if you want to do anything useful with it - using the SDHC reader for an OS kinda limits your expandability storage space wise and even with a class6 SDHC you will only get 6MB/s minimum and ~16MB/s max, whereas the SSD onboard gives a ~25Mb/s transfer rate.

Most of the models out now don't have the mini pci-e slot unfortunatly...

You at York uni?

Also, the ones that OCUK have in stock at the moment are only 2gb of memory arent they? How much space does that leave you with for storing files etc? Is it worth waiting for the 4gb ones to come back into stock?

Do the Eee PCs take SDHC, or just the old SD cards?

Yes, I am at york uni. I'm a first year undergrad studying MEng Software Engineering.

The 4g versions did come into stock breifly. Mine arrived today, xmas eve. :D

Definitely wait for the 4g versions, the 2g would function as no more than a web browser.

2gig is plenty for a fully functional OS instlal. It just means you have to store everything else on memory sticks or SDHC cards.
My install of Xubuntu was at 1.7gig before i put any games on. That is with OpenOffice, VLC, Opera and Thunderbird on there along with most of the other default Xubuntu install.

IIRC the default linux based OS has problems with WPA2 but it works ok under other OSes - I don't think its a hardware limitation. One of the main problems with the Eee and wlan is it seems to have issues with wireless networks with a space in the name.

Really tempted to pick up one of these next month but I need to ask someone a favour :). Has anyone tried ePSXe (PS1 emulator) on a Eee running XP? If so, what's the performance like?

WPA2 Support

Does the Eee support WPA2?

My girlfriends dad recieved one for christmas and just wondering whether it supports our exisiting WLAN or if I have to drop it to WPA.

Yes,it does. I've just got mine and configured it to connect to my WPA2 wireless without any problem at all. And the range is (almost) as good as my wireless-N cards.

Does it support it out of the box or do you have to adjust a few settings? If its the latter, is there a guide floating about?

No tweaking required. Just select "WPA" when setting up the wireless connection and enter the passphrase. That's all I had to do, and my wireless AP (Linksys WAG300N) is definitely setup for WPA2-PSK (AES).

can we have our own eee forum section? :P jokes.

Just to add some info into one post: (i think these are right, obviusly change if not) If we make an ocuk base for the eee i'll happily go trhough and verify everything (it got quite a big post, sorry about this?)

  • AFAIK you can BUY the pci-e mini socket and solder it on (eeeuser gospeedracer did this im sure) to 4b/4c models.
  • this means you can add the 8gb ssd released by sandisk (or bigger, 16/32gb) and IT WILL WORK with the 4gb (again on eeeuser im sure.)
  • if you plan to add this connection and ssd drive the internal hub solder wont fit, therefore usng the camera usb connection you can splice and add a hub in the monitor area off the webcam wires, this allows for a small hub (2/4 port) and power to host flash drives and bluetooth up there (there is room too)
  • if you dont a 2port internal usb hub with usb connections is do able, allowing for changable internal usb flash drives, bluetooth, or whatever fits :)
  • A touch screen mod is do able, a few over at eeeuser have done it, jjk I think his name is has a blog video of it working with xp.
  • I personally have xp on, with 2.5gb free. Everything works (keyboard, cam, wifi), I had vista but 512mb ram isn't enough for sidebar + firefox + msn sadly. With a gig it would be fine I think. Following the guides on eeeuser forum/wiki was confusing as hell and were in complete (I have my own way of doing it), but both os' are possible with a 2gb usb flash drive only. :)
  • its easy as pie to upgrade ram, and I have 2 emails from an asus member saying the sticker is fine to break for RAM upgrades.
  • Game wise it plays (on winxp) stalker, hl2, css, oblivion, wow, guildwars and others.
  • Theres a hacker gfx driver that allows for different resolutions by a member on eeeuser, however i think there are some drawbacks? I din't read into it much (does 1024 res i think.)
ummm i cant think of anything else? :P

Also if anyone could help me discuss out a keyboard mod Id love to implement something:

The idea is to use bright leds under the keyboard (there are about 6 holes in the metal tray) and put a piece of plastic/something to disperse the light evenly under the keys. However I have no idea about soldering etc, I could find out where the 5v sources on the mobo are easily enough but I have no soldering experience so, if anyone wants to give it a go or such let me know :)

not me no, a guy over at eeeuser (again!) did, and made a video on youtube. It had to use oldblivion mod as normally it cant even run the intro movies! but it did work in the end :)

obviously not amazingly :P

hl2/1 games run a bit iffy 15-30 fps i think? Apparently with 2gb of ram and running at 900mhz they are better.

however the low fps on a small screen mean you dont notice the framerate drop as much as you would expect.

stalker ive only heared of running, both on here and eee, i havent been on eee since before mas really so havent looked into that one yet.
