***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

it seems the popular method of putting XP on is to install 2gb of ram and set no SWAP file to preserve the on board SSD. eeeuser.com have announced that Asus will be making a 7800mah extended runtime battery (1.5x size). This interests me a lot.

My favourite mod would have to be the ipod HD mod. 120gb 1.8" drives are shortly to be released, ones that are pretty power efficient. I can well see one of these, in conjnction with an internalised usb pen drive would be most useful for me. I will be buying an eee when the extended battery is stocked.

Do you mean wiring new HDD/SSDs inside to the available USB ports? People have done these on other forums, not read of it here though.

The touchscreen mod has to be the best one I've seen, simply outstanding. Finding a 7" touchscreen kit seems to be the difficult part though

I've jusst got a Corsair GT 8GB and 16 GB (not GT) that I'm planning on installing internally via a 4 port USB hub - the eeeuser.com wiki has pretty good guides on how to do it.

First I'm trying to get Xandros running on the GT which I'm having mixed results with - did have it working but now it's gone all crappy on me; was just a practice run anyway so will just have to try again.

I've also ordered a touch screen off ebay that claims to fit the eee - just seach for "touch panel eee" and you'll come across it. I'll run this off another of the internal USB hub that I'm going to install.

I got a white 4gb one the other day, just installed a 2gb stick of corsair, but its only1gb showing in system, any ideas why this might be?

thanks,
Shaun

Hi mate,

If your running the default linux install it only recognises 1gb or RAM but you can modify it to recognise the 2gb by replacing the kernel. Check out: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ and scroll down to kernel for instructions on how to do this.

Looks like ill be returning My eee for a replacement After a week of trying to install XP with various different failures it wont reinstall the default linux from DVD i keep getting an error about unable to detect the disk size of the internal flash and so the install crashes. I think The internal ssd is faulty :(

Cheers,

Definietly want to do the touch screen mode, however with touch screen + RAM + other upgrades and start to become a bit costly.

Perhaps someone could start selling off modded eee pc's? Would be prepared to pay a bit extra, and the builder could get bulk orders for add ons.

Also want custom made for eee Ubuntu 7.10, would it be possible to compile Linux specially for the eee, removing all code not relevent to the hardware?

Almost bought one today, wish i had now.

Does every model come with carry a pouch?

Can you upgrade the RAM on every model or it is just the 4GB + up ones?

I believe they all come with pouches, my 4G did. There are reports most of the 2G Surf and 4G Surf models have the RAM soldered in, so not upgradeable (This is only from reading on the web, they infact all be soldered). If you want more than 512Mb RAM I'd advise getting the 4G non-Surf model, you also get a better battery with it so this why I went for it.

People are attempting this with stuff like eeeXubuntu, but it's going to take a while to perfect. I'm going to wait a month or so before changing me Eee at all, want to see if the hardware is stable and also wait for a tried and tested OS on these SSDs. The touchscreen mod looks awesome, definately a maybe for me :)

ive installed xp twice one mine now, (although nlited, not full version) with no problem, first one i updated manually fine, second one i intergrated hotfixes into nlite. Try making an nlite xp iso to free some space up and such like?

Also, oblivion works, yeah. Oldblivion mod.

Hi mate,

Yeah i have made about 6 different nlite disks each having different issues. But it think it was down to a faulty ssd drive. I Went to reinstall the Xandros Linux from the supplied DVD and it wont reinstall keeps crashing with various errors Sometimes complaining about "unable to find disk size" and also Disk i/o errors on the ssd :(

Anyway i just took it back hoping to get it replaced but they didnt have anymore and couldnt tel me when they were expecting anymore in so i had to take a refund. Really gutted especially as got a 4G in black for only £199 :(

Also will have to sell my 8gb SDHC on the Members market now lol

Cheers,

Hugest,

its not a graphicaly intense game, and as it runs oblivion it should run FM 2007 no probs

However, FM requires 1024x768, doesn't it?

And while it isn't graphically demanding, it can be demanding on CPU and memory depending on the level of detail you choose to run.
