Hi,

I see theres a new "test" 0501 bios out now that has a high performance 900Mhz or long battery 630Mhz setting in the bios :) Also theres a modified display driver a guy on the eee forum is working on that displays higher resolutions such as 800x600 and 1024x768 as well as 640x480 scaled to fit the screen with out scrolling which helps to run a lot of games that would not run under windows XP due to unsupported resolutions.

Damn all these developments 2 days after i had to return my faulty eee :( Now i have to get another :)

Cheers,
Hugest

test bios?

My bios can do 900mhz, and the display drivers have been out for many a moon, not just the past few days :P

Just finished my little shopping spree here in Taiwan! The kit here is so cheap!
With a bit of shopping around and the help of some locals, I've managed the following:

Asus EEEpc 4gb Black (701 7C) - TWD 10,700
Transcend 1gb 667mhz - TWD 700
Transcend 8gb Class 6 SD Card - TWD 1,600
Ultimate Ears Super.fi 3 - TWD 2,300
Logitech Vx Revolution - TWD 1,600
Total - TWD 16,900

At the current exchange rate, the EEEpc was right around £172 - for the non-surf model! The rest came to about £100, so all in all a pretty good shop!

Also picked up a brand new 4gb iPod nano 3rd gen for the girlfriend for 64 quid! Get in~

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting one of these for my daughter (and so I can web surf on the sofa)... how's the performance in 2D mode? I'm thinking of the Flash-driven web sites my daughter visits, like Club Penguin - will they operate smoothly on an EEE, or are we better off going for an entry-level normal laptop (for £300-£350)?

(I'd probably be buying the cheapest version of the EEE and just adding 1gb ram, plus a 2gb SD card if I feel the need)

edit: Oooh look: http://gizmodo.com/342468/real-live-pictures-of-8+inch-asus-eee-pc Shame they've kept the same resolution, but I'll hang on to my money til we see how much we're going to be gouged for it ;/

I had the exact same problem at first. You need to delete all 4 partitions and install XP on one big partition or else you'll get the infamous NTLDR error.

Don't worry about deleting the 'BIOS' partition...it doesn't actually contain the BIOS :p

 some other fourms say deleting all partitions turns it in to a £200 paper wait :confused:

So any uni students got them, what are they like for word processing?? I'm looking at one for uni, so much of the time will be spent writing up word docs. I'm quite a small guy with small hands but won't to know what its like to get use to it.

Also, what games does it run?? I mean I've got some really old games like Hogs Of War, Worms Armegeddon and Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. Spec wise they should work, but whats it like at the odd resolution? Anyway to force 800x600? And when are these new ones coming out!!!

Yes but im guessing your using the "old" beta bios not the latest 0501 bios. The new Bios apparently also fixes a few problems with the old bios particularly the wavy lines on screen experienced by many with the beta bios. It also increases the maximum screen brightness significantly making it more useable outside and in well lit areas.

If you already know everything Ill keep it to my self in future then :P

Forums suggest this may not be the case. more like £999 :p
I don't really understand what Asus are doing, the eee pc wouldn't have sold 350,000 units if it was $999. The low price is one of it's biggest selling points. Also bigger screen and same res doesn't make sense either since the main complaint about the screen is the res not the size. Looks like I may as well just pick up the current 4G if the news ones are going to cost a fortune. Not bothered about having wimax.

I would like 1GB RAM/4GB model, but if the newer versions are going to cost more than £300 I'd rather just buy a £300 laptop. Should be able to pickup a 14" for around that.

By the way, my £999 comment was tongue in cheek. In all seriousness, once the price goes up and the specs look the same as every other laptop manufacturer, I'll lose interest! Its the community that has sprung up around this low cost machine that has drawn me towards it.

I'm typing this from my EEEpc with Windows XP right now :)
All 4 partitions were deleted and it definitely isn't being used as a paper weight :p

I'm just about to start my final semester so this little EEEpc will be perfect for doing dissertation work when I have some spare time at the uni. I've gotten fed of waiting 30+ minutes for a free computer because half the guys can't wait to get home to check their facebook accounts.

I'll admit the keyboard is pretty small and it definitely does slow down my typing. I wouldn't want to type my entire dissertation on this, but for quick edits and proofreading, it should be perfect. I installed Office 2007 and removed that top bar so it gives me plenty of space to work with.

SoyoDragon I can confirm too you have to delete all four partitions. I was installing from a USB stick and it wouldn't even let me get ot the gui stage of the XP installation until I had deleted all four.

Presumably one of the 4, prob the 'BIOS' one takes boot priority stopping XP working correctly.

As for the whole 900mhz thing there was a beta Bios out a while back but I read it was flaky though I don't rem it having the number 0501. The screen thing has been out a while but I've never bothered trying it as it replaces your display adapter drivers ?
