***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

i'm still undecided, someone near me is selling a 2gb one for £140 but still not sure! I guess I could sell it if I didn't like it but 2gb seems stupidly small.

What's this version of XP lite? I don't have a usb cd drive so getting XP on might be though :S

Installed Ubuntu on my desktop, it's used 2.2GB of space. I guess there needs to be a incredibly cut down of Ubuntu for the EEE PC..

The Eee uses Xandros, unless you're meaning what others are using.

I'm still using Xandros, and im trying to decide why i want to install XP..the only reasons i can think of, is that i can install a game or two. Help :P

Just put my Eee into advanced mode..quite like it actually, however not sure whether to keep the Xandros Advanced Mode, or use XP.

Will attempt to install XP tomorrow sometime, or the weekend, who here is using their Eee more than their normal laptop/desktop now?

so i could buy the 2gb model then grab 2gb of memory and 16gb ssd card and upgrade, the only soldering would be the 2gb memory?

I need a laptop that can run the likes of Netbeans and maybe Eclipse (both used to code Java).

Would the Eee PC be a viable option for this?

I'm after something that is cheap, and the Eee PC certainly is, but I don't know how well it'd run the development environments, or if the screen size and resolution would make it ok for me to see and code with?

Also it'd ideally mean installing XP, which I see people on here seem to say is possible.

Try turning the resolution on your desktop PC down to 800 pixels wide, fire up the IDEs and see if you can live with it.

All well and good, but a 19" widescreen is a little bit bigger than a 7". ;)

Also got to fix 'beans before I do that as I broke it :D

It depends if you would prefer portability over a good spec, InvG

Problem is that for circa £200 there is nothing of any worth in a 'normal' laptop.

If your monitor has 1:1 mode more accurate, I tried 800x480 and on my 20", it appears as 10" across...so got a idea when the 10" model comes out, if it's the same resolution.

The HP 530 is a very good price.

However, i chose the Eee over a normal laptop..i am using it more than my 1k laptop, due to how variable it is, for portability. Doesnt toast the valuables either.

Well I changed the res but due to not having 1:1 on my monitor I went into PS, and edited the image so that it was the same literal size as the screen then printed it off. The image size does certainly seem usable, but I don't know how well it'd run XP and Netbeans.

For those that have XP installed, how 'quick' is it. Does it seem nice and quick, or very sluggish?

Thats the Eee compared to my HP Dv2000, which is a 14.1" Widescreen.

Using Xandros Advanced Mode.

Sorry for the bad picture.

Yeah, it seems like it's a decent size to see all I need to see (what with my awesome printout to view). Wouldn't give my much space on the screen to see and code, but would certainly have enough space. It also then means I have something small and light that I can browse the web easily enough with.

Problem is I want the black one...and it's just not available. :(

Will have to put some more thought into it, and if people can say how well it runs XP that'd be great. :)
