***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Mine arrived today, really surprised at the quality of the unit, the online pictures dont do it justice.

I know its probably been covered, but whats the battery like on these? Its a 2mb version.

Just read 10 pages, seems like a very cool tool. Few questions:

Is it stable at higher resolutions yet? What's the limit for this tft?
Can you get rid of the black borders?
Installing WindowsXP - Can it be done via a USB stick (or does this laptop come with an external drive)
Could I play the odd game on it ok? Is 900Mhz enough?
What is the GFX memory?

Yes, people have many resolutions working.

Black borders? Do you mean around the screen, they are speakers, then a small border, looks nice in person.

Installing XP is done easily, can use external CD Rom etc, or a bootable flash drive.

It has a GMA900, which is very acceptable for laptops, can use the odd game on low settings.

The 900mhz is fine, just be slow loading the game, depends what game you want to play.

Just about the resolutions - would I be right in thinking the native resolution of the actual LCD panel used is 800*480, so any higher resolution will be interpolated (downscaled) and therefore not look as sharp?

Correct. But as an example. Some games wont unstall unless they have 800x600 minimum. You can change the screen to this res to install the game, then in the game settings, you can change it back to 800x480 so you get a sharper image. Half Life 2 for example plays ok by installing this way.

Thanks, really considering one. The screen may be a little small though. How easy is it on the eyes? As my old thinkpad with 10.1" was pretty good and this is quite a bit smaller.

As for the GFX, how would it compare to an ATI IGP345m as I had that in my other laptop and it wasn't very good. Does it share memory with the RAM?

Wouldn't mind the odd bit of CS or WOW when bored, that might be asking too much of this little lappy though aha.

By the border I mean it looks like there is a fair border of unused TFT like when you set the res to 800x600 on a 15" laptop.

What is the current price I should be paying for the top spec model as Ebay is saying £300+ ?

source engine can run on gma900, nevermind 1.6 :) No ideas on wow but everyones playing stuff like quake3, which uses a newer engine than 1.6(although 1.6 obviously takes a few performance hits from steam updates over the years)
Dont forget the chances are your ati was having to cope with filling a hell of a lot more pixels than this one does, a video card on a laptop with 1200x800 is filling 2.5x as many pixels =/

If you've played MOHAA, it plays that.

You should be looking at £220 for the 900mhz, 4GB SSD, 512mb RAM.

I've updated to the latest bios, switched on the advanced desktop (will be installing XP soon I imagine)

How to I overclock to 900Mhz.

Seems weird typing Mhz instead of Ghz again :p

Those black bars either side of the screen are actually the speakers. There is an EEE PC with a bigger screen on the way that fills all that space, but no one really know when and how much yet, but it's sure to be quite a bit more.

These are very cool indeed, by no means would they replace a laptop but they seem like a great portal flexible unit, that lays somewhere between a laptop and a PDA.

Christ the 4GB versions are very hard to find.. i've spent best part of an evening looking. Anyone know of anywhere in Essex/London, email in sig.. thanks :)

Touch screen

Will be very interested in how this works out.

One of the mods im tempted to do.

Let me know how it goes mate!

I've just done the touch screen mod and I love it. It makes a massive difference as you don't have to keep dropping back to the touch pad.

It does result in a bulge in the screen though that stops it from fully closing, about a 1mm gap when closed, but trust me, it is not a problem and well worth it for having the touch screen.

Took me about 2 hours to fully install, but I already had an internal USB hub in place. Longest bit was figuring out where to put the controller.

Got mine yesterday ( on it now ) , really want to stick with the linux....but I'm having troubles working out how to install from my usb stick

.....I may end up having to install XP for work if problems persist.
