***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Yeah it wouldn't be too bad if Xandros was only a couple of hundred MB, I don't think it is. Install Ubuntu and most of that 2GB is gone.

guys, i got a few ££ spare at the moment, tell me why i need to buy one of these funky machines?

for thos of you who have xp on it, do you find the left over hard drive space sufficient for putting films on etc etc?

I recently took my eee on holiday. Its a far better picture than the 7inch portable DVD player we have. We loaded up a load of films, tv eps and music onto a USB disk and it was great. It kept my little 1 year old happy on the plane too, just played a few episodes of Night Garden to keep him from driving everyone nuts.

Before we had to take a separate bag for the big old laptop, but the eee + usb disk fit in the misses handbag.

Generally I'll use it on the sofa to do stuff, it doesnt fry your jewels like a normal laptop does.

How long does the battery last just playing movies?

Also, does anyone know what the max res output via vga it can do? i was wondering if it can do 1360*768, so if you have a TV that can do this, can you try....

....Thanks.

Hi,

I have read that the eee pc can't actually run at 900mhz very well and it causes adverse affects....does it for you?

Have you tried playing movies outputted at that res? Because some pcs/laptops state that they can do a certain resolution but it doesn't actually work very well.

Was wondering whether anyone has actually tested the eee pc at 1360*768 resolution, or could test for me...

Thanks.

the problems were with an earlier revision bios, it runs at 900 fine with the newest ones afaik.
think a few people further back in thread said it was ok at that res.

Leaving in a few mins to pick one up, got one White 4G hold for £220 :).

Should be picking up 2GB DDR2 and a 4-8GB SDHC if i can too :).

Posting from my new 4G 701 White EEE now :)

Got a copy of Windows Fundamentals on it and it's all working brilliantly! Very impressed so far with it I must say. Windows is surprisingly quick and it handles Office 2003 perfectly.

On my Eee now :).

£230 with 1Gb ddr2..not complaining.

How would i go about backing up the linux that is on here, so i can install xp and if i want to..go back onto linux??

None of the "official" Asus bios's will do 900mhz. There is one thats labelled the super bios. Its number is 0511. That allows you to switch between standard 630Mhz and 900Mhz. Alternatively, go to the eeeuser forum and search for a program called eeectl by dci. It allows you to over/underclock direct from windows. It also allows you to control the fan and gives real time temp monitoring.
Also try EEEres by kkjj. It sets the screen res to 800x600 but again, check eeeuser and read the whole thread. It is usefull for surfing the net.

The RAM can be upgraded in some of the 2G's if your willing to take it apart. Some have it soldered onto the motherboard.

Anyone else have problems connecting to wireless? Mine is stuck on Pending.

Also the Eee cost £230 with 1GB RAM :).

Its all on the dvd that came with the EEE.
No need to backup unless you mean your personal data.

If you install XP remember to delete all 4 partitions, even the one that says bios.
It isnt the bios.

Ah thought so.

So basically if i install XP, and want xandros back..i simply use the disk?

Any ideas on the wireless??

Do you have DHCP set in your router?

Other option is to manually allocate an IP address to the EEE. Not sure how you do that under Linux as I use XP.
All my PC's are configured that way.
