***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

what is the better mouse for the eeepc?

the G5 or the VX nano

im leaning to the g5, however the vx looks tempting as i will be carrying it around a bit

I'm seriously considering one of these to replace my work laptop. Essentially I need something that could run Word,Outlook and Skype, seeing as that's about all I use on a regular basis. Are any of you using your eeepc for work? Do you get used to the small keyboard or does it become even more irritating as time goes on? Also, don't suppose anyone has got Rome or Medieval Total war (1, not 2) working?

Not sure about Rome/Medieval Total War.

However, i use it a lot now, and yes i got very used to the keyboard at one stage, was typing as fast as i can on a full laptop. When i first went back to a standard layout keyboard, i was pressing keys twice, because i got so used to the Eee :p.

Well I've just read most fo this MASSIVE thread and if people don't mind I have a few questions. I am not a whizz at software and modding but I do build my own desktops and can install OS/tinker in BIOS settings. So middle of the road ability. Please bear this in mind when responding ;)

I want an Eee for browsing, tinkering with, and very basic gaming. I have seen youtube clips of WoW running and I want to do this. From what I've read I need to do the following:

1) Upgrade RAM to 2gig - PC5300 sodimm - is this right? Can I do 2gig on latest BIOS?

2) Upgrade BIOS - see above maybe - I want full 900mhz CPU performance

3) Mod to enable higher resolutions - how easy is this? I read about upgrading gfx drivers - is it as simple as that?

4) Use storage other than the inbuilt 4gig for basically everything other than the OS to increase working life - I dont really want a USB stick hanging out the whole time but I do NOT want to be soldering anything - am I stuck?

Many thanks for any replies :)

Yes, 2GB is supported, afaik.

Many people have this running, head over to eeeuser.com.

Apparantly so, i quite like using the 800x480 myself, and a driver allows a switch to 800x600, but yes there are hacked drivers for that.

Theres a built in SD Card reader, which can be upto 16GB, afaik.

not 100% on ram, it can do 2gig on xp. Linux requires an update.

900mhz is possible but fan will be on 100% all the time. A little annoying if in a silent room (for me anyway) and it gets a bit toasty

Just a gfx change but its not perfect. Sleep doesnt work afaik and some other issues.

you can internally add storage by soldering wires, not touching the mobo etc. Theres a guide on eeeuser.com i think. Some guy wanted to add storage but couldn't solder :) SDHC can store up to like 32/64gb? Constantly updating, I have 4gb in mine just cus it was cheap.

Cheers for that mate, though I doubt I'll get together enough posts to be able to see them before they're gone. Is it against site rules to post what sort of price they are going for second hand?

It's against the rules to sell outside of the mm, not sure about price talk but i doubt anyone will care.

Generally selling for around retail (£220) on most second hand places including here, you won't get a bargain as they're in demand.

If you're desperate you can import a new one from the US for not much more, personally i'm waiting until they're more readily available.

Probably another silly question but on the basis that I would be upgrading my RAM to at least 1 gig, probably 2, to use XP without a page file, and run all non OS software off of external storage where possible to avoid overuse of the inbuild SSD - there is no point waiting or spending extra money on the 8gig version due out shortly is there? The extra internal storage space wouldn't be used and the RAM would get replaced anyway.

Is there any other reason to wait for the new versions?

The 4G version is hard enough to source still, I bet the 8G version will pretty rare for a while. Most people can fit every app they want onto the 4G with a little to spare, I doubt the 8G will really make a great difference in usability. They are just producing it because they can for roughly the same money, what with flash memory so cheap.

Get your 4G and some ram now, start enjoying it, as it could be months until u ge ta 8G (and for a blow-up price too)

^ sums it up really.

And for the price, its about the right sort of pricing it should be at £220.

You can get 1-16gb SD Flash Cards, to make up for space.

Hi Guys!:),

Would love one of these for a toy any idea when the price will come down a bit its only 100 quid shy of a dell atm which seems better value :)

Cheers Kevin

The price as it is, is good, imho.

They might come down second hand, when the 8G comes out.

Although a dell might be 'better' value. It is not as small, as light, or overall as nifty. The reason it is so good, is a year or so ago, it'd set you back a £k to get something this portable.

£220 is a bargain, imho.
