***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Once there's no longer a shortage of stock then they should come down a bit. AFAIK the 4GB 701 model's RRP is actually closer to £200. (or £210-220?)

Who knows when that will be though - they seem to be a big hit :)

The retail for the 4G 701 is £219, afaik.

I find the EEE so useful for going in and out of uni. jsut plonk it in my normal bag and off i go. i did put a 8gb SDHC card on it tho. put my My Docs and the like on it.
I have installed XP + Office 2007 with about 1.7gb left over give or take..

no need for the ram upgrade for the time being anyway, unless it really shortens the load times of office docs?

i dont know if i should sell mine, its kind of gathering dust. My lectures aren't what I thought so it doesn't get used as intended :(

Im on mine now, i have msn, firefox, xfire, office, xp, msn etc, usual apps installed, and some music, got 2.06gb free. Might order 2gb stick for this, would leave me with a 512mb and a 1gb, its so cheap now.

not much hassle if you know how ;) There are loads of guides.

only problem is formatting the internal ssd to be fair. Thats a pain!

Formatting is fine, imho.

But, for practicality, id use a External DVD ROM, can be used on any machine, more than once :). Saves a lot of time too.

Yes I agree, the external CD/DVD drive saves a massive amount of time and fiddling about ;)

Definitely worth the few quid I reckon.

^ quick reply, heh.

I did originally install, using a USB - a full version of XP, however it was not worth the hassle, to be honest.

It took less than half the hassle and time, to use the External.

Might re-install at some point though.

Installed;

Windows XP Professional NLite
Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word etc)
Xfire
CCleaner
WinRAR
MSN
FireFox
Codecs
Loads of Drivers

Then theres random files, bit of music.

Total Size - 3.71 GB
Free Space - 2.02 GB

Installing XP from USB couldn't be easier IMO - seems a waste to buy a USB CD/DVD just for that purpose when a spare USB stick will do the job nicely. Of course if you have other uses for the external DVD then probably easier, but I wouldn't buy one just to install XP on an eee

Thats what i was thinking, but then thought it would help to write dvd's on an old machine, have the portability, and also the ease of installing stuff on the Eee that comes on disks.

I didn't (and still don't) have an external DVD nad have 1GB USB sticks coming out of my ears so I thought I'd make use of them to do the install - and I've been spending enough on gadgets already ;) so some belt tightening ensued. I've since installed Office 2007, Visio, etc all from USB stick, and whilst it is slower (I would expect) it works fine.

Oh yeh, i agree you can definitely do it, i had done that originally, but as i have 2 older machines, without writers, thought i may aswell pay £20 for an external.
